Some kind of Lost or Stolen tracking system PLEASE??
It would be nice if they would make some sort of system so if your Zune was lost or stolen it would automatically lock out the unit if they hooked it to an internet connected computer. My zune was stolen, and now there is nothing i can do to recover it, any type of recovery system would be nice. $250 for the 80GB is kinda a lot to lose. Even some way to get an IP address from the computer a lost or stolen Zune was connected to would be nice, i think microsoft is an advanced enough company to create some high-tech tracking, right?

I think it's been tossed around, but I don't have any details on it.  We'd have to some how lo-jack the zune, because just hooking it up to another PC wouldn't be cause for a lockout, has to be another way to determine something like that.

re: Some kind of Lost or Stolen tracking system PLEASE??

Would it be possible to have some way of reporting a lost Zune, so if a registered Zune was connected to a computer with an internet connection it could be locked out. In order to have it locked out you would have to sign in under your account and report your registered Zune lost or stolen. When a reported Zune is connected it "updates" and locks it, and in order to unlock you would have to sign back into your account and get an email link to get an update and unlock it. I've almost come to terms that I'm not getting it back, it would just be nice if I do decide to purchase another that there would be some kind of protection from the same sort of thing happening again. Even if it were just in the form of some sort of password protection on the Zune itself, at least I would know that the theif would not be able to enjoy the Zune they stole from me.

Great idea. It would be such a bummer to lose my 80 gig and having the *** run around with it like it is completely his.

I agree it sucks to lose it or have it stolen.  As for the reporting, I can put this in as a request.  Your description of how it could work makes sense to me.  Let me find out if there's anything we already do to track stolen Zunes.

Oh thank you! I begged Apple to do this years ago to no avail

Having had my zune pickpocketed and just had to go to the store for another $300 worth of Zune and case I too would vote for a way to both report a Zune stolen, and track down, lock out, brick or otherwise disable or trace the stolen device.  It would allow police to track the device down, and if you prevent a thief from using the device it's a much less likely target.  It would be a leg up on Apple that just ignores the problem as well.

I know my XM Radio is not a target for theft because without the radio ID hooked to a valid account it's useless.

re: Some kind of Lost or Stolen tracking system PLEASE??

I heard something on the news about being able to do this with the iPod.  I think once you report it as stolen, the next time it is synced to a computer, it will email you with the name, ip address and address of the person registered with that computer.  Not sure of the legal issues involved in obtaining that information.  But it could be written into the EULA of Zune software that it will only be shared in the event of indentification of stolen property or something like that.  I am no lawyer, but I know you guys have some :p

There should be no legal issues, they stole it from you, you should have full rights to the location of YOUR property. Hell, you should have the rights to track the thief down with a baseball bat.

You can lock it out by using the the serial number. This definately should be added and a GPS tracker, haha! No, but seriously you should be able to lock the Zune down using the serial number. When the software sees the reported serial number it will lock the Zune and show a stolen message on the system and software so the thief knows he's in deep trouble.
