Why do you listen to "Christian" Music?

Just want to know what motivates you to listen to "Christian" music.  Is it all you listen to?  I'm sure we'll get a few people who think they're funny and will put "I don't because Christian music sucks" good for you, move along now.

This is not meant to be a debate over which Christian bands suck or don't.  There's already a thread on here for that.

Here's mine:

I really love all different kinds of music, music in and of itself it beautiful and inspiring so I don't get that hung up on genre.  I listen to Christian music because I am a Christain (= faith in Jesus Christ) and with the whole world screaming for each person's attention it is easy to get distracted from what is most important.  It's important to me to keep a majority of inputs into my life (music, tv, internet surfing, people we hang out with) clean.  So I mainly only listen to Christian music, it's all that's on my zune.  If I'm going to listen to music I want it to cause me to reflect on my relationship with the saviour, my actions towards others, or to be encouraged.

*claps*  good job.

actually, i'm serious.

that basically, in a nutshell, is hwy I listen to "christian" music.

a lot of music out there (in my opinion) is talking/singing about how much life sucks or how much they hate someone, which, come on, i have enough negativity in my life already, i don't need to listen to that too.  Christian music just really shows that there is a way, that all of this crappy stuff in life won't last-that God's there for us-even when we don't feel it, that other people feel the way i have, and that they understand, and that taking it to God is really the best thing i can do.

re: Why do you listen to "Christian" Music?

Hey geboRedeemed,

What a great thread !  And I agree w/you here in that I listen to Christian music because I'm a born again Christian who needs continual encouragement, inspiration and comfort which are just some of the things I feel when I listen to Christian artists/bands and their music... it's also very uplifting and can ease my frustration and irritation that I sometimes feel as I'm working... and reminds me to keep things in perspective when it comes to all aspects of life... as like others have said here... this is all just temporal... and will one day fade away...  Smile [:)]

Listening to music of faith helps to strengthen my faith... and keeps me going even when I just feel like sitting and doing nothing... or quitting altogether... and something that you guys will understand is... sometimes when I put my music on shuffle... the song that first plays is often the exact one I need to hear at the particular time during the day... which as we know is no accident... but is indeed God speaking thru the music... which is always most awesome !  Big Smile [:D]  Yes [Y]

re: Why do you listen to "Christian" Music?

I listen to primarily Christian music with some classic rock (Journey, Boston, etc.) and some country thrown in every so often. I'd say I'm about 95% Christian stuff, 5% other.

I listen to Christian music because:

1. It's good music. If it was just hymns all day, I probably wouldn't be too into it.

2. It offers lyrics with meaning. I'm sick of the pointless ramblings of most popular music.

3. I don't have to worry about questionable material when I listen to a song.

4. It all carries a positive message. And as someone said already, there's enough negativity around us.

Why do I listen to Christian music?

Ok- here it is: I listen because I am a born-again Christian AND because the music provides encouragement. If I claim to be a Christian, people need to see Christ everywhere in my life, including in the stuff I listen to. Whenever any of my friends look at my zune they're like, "What is this? Christian rock?" I'm like, "yeah you should try listening to some of it." I feel like a lot of music out there is just music with a good beat and explicit lyrics. This isn't the case with Christian music. The lyrics are fun and uplifting.

re: Why do you listen to "Christian" Music?
I'm not Christian, but I have found myself inadvertently listening to Christian rock when I am traveling out of town and (gasp) liking some of it. More than a few times I have been drivining in a rental car (usually in Texas, for some reason) and wondering who is singing that catchy song on the radio. After a few more songs, I catch a song with obvious Christian lyrics and realize that I stumbled onto a Christian station. I never actively search out Christian music, I usually just go for music that I dig and a lot of what I listen to is recommended to me by others. You rarely meet someone who is not a serious practicing Christian recommending something like Christian rock.

re: Why do you listen to "Christian" Music?

I listen to electronic, rock, bluesy guitar instrumentals, classic rock, and christian music mostly as of lately.  I started listening to christian music after hearing some catchy songs here and there while scanning the radio just like you did.  I guess the point of the genre is to put some encouraging, thought-provoking material on the airwaves for the masses.  We're more susceptible to our environments than we think most of the time, so listening to some musician saying that today is going to be a great day, keep your eye on the prize, make today count, and other things like that can make a big difference in our attitudes, what we say, and what we do.  I never really listenened to another genre that has actually made that kind of difference in my life.  So, I listen to the genre just because of the track record it's had in my life in that respect.

re: Why do you listen to "Christian" Music?

I used to listen to a lot of secular music, but GOD has convicted me about that. And the conviction that HE has brought to my life is this: Although the songs may not be necessarily bad, the artists that sings those songs are not christians. Which means that by me buying their music, I am supporting thier lifestyle-which obviously is against what I believe in.

I love christian rock-especially switchfoot, releint k and blindside. Those three artists have helped me a lot in my walk with GOD-especially in the hardships that I have faced. I just find that Christian music-true Christian music-has depth, truth, conviction, and a godly message that just edifies your soul and motivates you to contemplate upon who you are and who GOD is.

I agree completely with this comment.  I'm not as good with words as everyone else is here and maybe that's why I like music.  Artists can say what I wish I could say.

One of my all time favorite Christian songs is 'God Gave Me Back My Tomorrow' by Ray Boltz.  I heard this song at a very dark time in my life when I had very little hope for the future.  As the song states, "I've made choices that I've known weren't right. And they brought me to my knees at the end of a lonely street and I am standing here today, and I want to say God gave me back my tomorrow.  I threw tomorrow away, he took this life full of sorrow, suddenly everything changed. The moment it happened, it was the moment I knew it was like walking in the darkness when the light come shining through. If you're struggling with the guilt and shame. You traded your tomorrow and all you got to show for it was heartache and pain. And it's brought you to your knees at the end of a lonely street. He is standing here today and He'll help you say' God gave me back my tomorrow".

I don't think this song is available through the marketplace as I had to rip it from an old CD I had.  This is one reason I don't want to rely on the Zune Pass.  If I didn't buy songs then I wouldn't have them to return to when Zune (or other sites) decide they are not popular enough to make available.

I truly believe there are no accidents as there's a reason I happened to cruise the boards tonight.  I don't normally spend too much time on them but I found my way here.  God definitely knows what you need and when you need it.  (btw my definition of coincidence is God)  Smile [:)]

re: Why do you listen to "Christian" Music?
When I was in HS, I thought only hymns and the old country gospel stuff they play at church were Christian music.  I was a Blink-182, Green Day, Creed, and  Linkin Park fan.    I was not aware that there were modern sounding bands.  My freshman year of hs, the new preacher's daughter let me listen to Switchfoot's latest release (A New Way to Be Human) at the time.  Another friend told me to buy Audio Adrenaline's Hit Parade album my sophomore year.  Some friends my got me hooked on Relient K and MxPx my senior year of  hs.  I actually skipped the first part of history class to buy Relient K's second cd and Audio Adrenaline's Life.   From that point on I was hooked.

I have expanded my Christian music library, and to this day I rarely listen to a band which is not.  I have found I relate more to those bands than the secular bands and the music does not have much appeal to me any more.  I also tend to be happier and find the day easier to get thru.  I usually listen to Hawk Nelson, Kutless, Thousand Foot Krutch, Anberlin, Emery, Relient K, Falling Up, Switchfoot, The Send, FM Static, Underoath, and Audio Adrenaline.  I picked up some Stellar Kart, A Dream Too Late, and Ruth cds and they are good as well.  I would appreciate any recommendations.
