Syncing problem

basically I have less HD space then my zune does. I erased some music out of my collection, and I hooked my 80g and it auto synced and erased off of my zune all the music I erased outta my collection. Is there a way to stop that? I went in to the options and turned off the auto sync...I dont know what else to do. can someone please help?

re: Syncing problem

Autosync is supposed to keep your device and collection "in sync."  So, if you delete it from your collection, on next sync with the computer, the content will be deleted from the device.

When you turn on Let Me Choose, this behavior should go away and you should be able to sync from your player library into your device library and then also be able to delete it from your player library without it being deleted from your device.  (wow, that was a lot of deletes!)  I've been reading these forums for awhile and I'm not entirely sure I trust the switch from automatic to manual being this benign.

I'll find out tomorrow and create a sticky post.

re: Syncing problem

Well, that was fast.  Blargh on design!

Both Automatic and Let Me Choose Syncs will remove content from your device if it was removed from your collection.

The only way to have a true "manual sync" where content is not removed, is to set up a Guest Partnership with your device.

I'll go sticky this some place.  We are revisiting this feature to make it less annoying.

re: Syncing problem

Yes as I later found out, Let Me Choose is still an autosync.  The only true MANUAL sync at this time is to have a guest partnership.

So in Device settings, choose Forget this device.  Close the software.  Disconnect the device, reconnect the device.  You should now be all guested up.

re: Syncing problem

Were they pulled off the Zune device when you moved them?  That would be why I would think they would get re-sync'd to the device.  I would NOT think they would reconvert, however, since I thought the transcodes stayed on the computer (unless your transcode cache was really small and ran out of space OR if you deleted / cleared the transcode cache, they would need to reconvert)

So the idea to get a truly manual sync experience is to connect as a guest.  It means you lose some of the automatic functionality, but items wouldn't be removed any longer.
