Tracks missing since upgrade to 2.x

Ever since upgrading from Zune 1.x to Zune 2.x I have encountered missing tracks.  The missing audio tracks are not "protected" content and they are on my pc.  I have tried resetting the Media Collection, but the software does not find the missing tracks.  One thing may be causing the problem:  the missing tracks are the same sizes as some of the tracks that were found (for the same album).  It appears that the software may think that the file (with the same file size) is a duplicate, even though the name of the file is different.

Right now, I am not very happy with my Zune.  I bought the Zune instead of an iPod because I liked Microsoft better than Apple.  I'm beginning to wonder, though, whether I made the right decision.  Apparently, Microsoft is not very concerned with support of this product, as it apperas that they do not provide options for contact (phone or e-mail) other than this forum.

I don't remember having this problem with version 1 of the software.

Any suggestions as to how to fix this problem???

Dunno about your problem but they do provide information about support options by clicking the Support link at the top of the page...

Thanks for the link.  I must have missed that before.  That information does not appear to be easily accessible through the current menu structure.

Ah Hah! I've noticed this problem too! I'm glad i'm not the only one.

Anyone who has Gwen Stefani's The Sweet Escape check on their device if you have Wind it Up twice... which you should, because on the CD / computer, there are Wind it up & Wind it up (live)... But the software/device decided to choose one...

re: Tracks missing since upgrade to 2.x
Since upgrading to the latest version of the 2.x software (version 2.3) I haven't had issues with missing tracks, especially those similarly titled. In fact I gained tracks as a result of updating. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the software database having been touched by version 2.2. Before I updated I made sure to run the media collection reset tool to make sure I was starting off with a clean slate. Perhaps your missing tracks are a result of the software working with a funky database file?

I ran the database rest utility and allowed the program to "find" the media.  The result was no different.  Albums which had files which were the same size as other files in the album only displayed one of the files, i.e., 4 out of 6 tracks (results were similar on any album which had files with equal file sizes.

So you're talking about songs with identical metadata but different file names, while using the latest version of the software?. The reason I ask about the metadata is because windows won't allow two files to share the same name.

re: Tracks missing since upgrade to 2.x
Actually, I don't believe that the metadata is identical.  Out of 6 tracks, three of them (3, 4 & 5) are the exact same size.  Each one has a different file name, title and track number.  Only one of the three will show up in the collection.  All of the other mp3 applications that I have recognize all six tracks.  I've tried to "drag & drop" to the album, but what will happen is that instead of displaying tracks 1, 2, 3, and 6, after the "drag & drop" it will display tracks 1, 2, 4 and 6.

Try downloading Windows Media ASF Viewer (link). Once downloaded, trag the file into the ASF Viewer window. To view more than one file at once, resize the window of the first file dragged into the window.

Close the Zune software.

What we're looking for is if these three songs have the ZuneMediaID tag. These files are mp3 and not wma right? This is what you'll be looking for in the program, note the highlighted tag frame in the left hand column (picture). There are two tag frames with the PRIV tag name so if you don't see the ZuneMediaID in one, check the other. If you find that they have the exact same ID, try rewriting the tags in another program such as Mp3Tag or Windows Media Player. And then check in ASF Viewer to see if the songs are indeed missing the  PRIV tag frame.

Open the Zune Software.

Add them back into the software, if it doesn't pick them up automatically. Hopefully you should be able to see tracks 1-6.

Solar257 - I downloaded the ASF viewer and none of the tracks in the "albums" which are missing tracks contain any PRIV tag frames.  After spot-checking several, I only found a few which actually contained them.  These files are MP3 and are not from music CD's.

Ok, this is odd. Other than the Zune software, what are you using to write the tags to the files?

Edit: I've added this to the Sync Issues thread
