WIth 2.3 update. Songs and Albums are messed up.
Now the songs and albums are all mixed up.  The wrong songs with the wrong albums in collection and Zune.  Way to go, another screw up.

2.3?  Where'd you get that?  My 2.1.888.2 says it's current.

Those songs on my Zune card? They're the KIDS, not ME!!!

The only 2.3 release at this point is the firmware, and this problem sounds like a library problem, not a device problem. You need to fix it in your collection first I would think.

Same here!

My "Various Artists" and "Original Soundtrack" (for the Album Artist tag field) are showing as the individual song's Artist, both, in my Zune collection and my Zune device. The files have not been modify; both, Windows Media Player and Windows Explorer show the correct tag info.

This is very confusing, they were fine before you did the optional 2.3 firmware update?

It seems really weird as the 2.3 firmware update was just that, firmware, it didn't touch anything on your pc.

I agree... but that is exactly what happen.

After retagging and rearranging my MP3 files (twice) to satisfy the Zune software and build my collection, I used my Zune 80Gb device for a couple of weeks adding two or three new albums I bought on CD (my whole collection is ripped from my CD collection). A week ago I decided to change my entire soundtracks Album Artist tag field from "Various Artists" to "Original Soundtrack" (so I can distinguish them from general compilations). A couple of days of work and everything was in order, both, in the Zune software and the Zune device (I checked!)

Then firmware 2.3 came along, I did the upgrade with no noticeable problem at the moment, and yesterday, browsing the Zune device for a soundtrack, I notice its listing all of them under "Original Artist" for both, the Album Artist and the song Artist... with a couple of exception that were listed as both! I mean, a couple of tracks (that were fine before) are listed under "Original Soundtrack" for both fields (Album Artist and song Artist) and under the song artist (Album Artist and song Artist).

Puzzled, I launch the Zune software and notice that all those tracks, Various Artists and Original Soundtrack, lost their individual artist information. On the List view, all three Artist, Album Artist and Contributing Artist show same information.

Obviously the collection got messed up... the main issue is that the only thing I did was upgrade the firmware, load a podcast or two, and stream, music to my Xbox 360. Did it had anything to do with the firmware upgrade? I do not know; but the Zune software, which holds the collection, is used to perform the upgrade, and that is the only thing "different" or "special" that I've done with the software/device in the past week.

i just relaunched my software to see if they same thing had happened to my collection and it hadn't, at least as of this typing.  the number of artists are still the same and the soundtracks still had the information from before on there.  it's really weird how these things glitch for some of us and not others.

It was all fine before the update yesterday.  It was messed up in Library and on Zune.  For it to finally get striaght I had to uninstall software, do a PC search and deleted every folder that was labeled Zune, and then go into registry and delete all Zune entries.

re: WIth 2.3 update. Songs and Albums are messed up.

More problems

I have not connected the Zune device back to my computer since the upgrade to firmware 2.3and the whole mess this brought to my Zune collection.

Before the upgrade to firmware 2.3, my Zune 80GB listed all by multi-disc albums correctly:

  • Track 1 (from Disc 1)
  • Track 2 (from Disc 1)
  • ...
  • Track n (from Disc 1)
  • Track 1 (from Disc 2)
  • Track 2 (from Disc 2)
  • ...
  • Track m (from Disc 2)

The Zune software though, listed everything by track order; so, on a 2-disc album I got:

  • Track 1 (from Disc 1)
  • Track 1 (from Disc 2)
  • Track 2 (from Disc 1)
  • Track 2 (from Disc 2)
  • ... and so on.

I made my peace with it a while ago when I decided (like most of you) to us the software solely to sync to the device. But after firmware 2.3 my Zune device is listing the songs just like the software: by track number regardless of the disc.

I am certain of this change since there is a 2-disc album I've been listening every weekend for the last 4 weeks, and today, the weekend after the upgrade, I notice that the 2nd song that played was not the same song I was used to... I checked the device and voila! I notice the problem.

Anybody else experiencing this?

...now what?

So there goes two or three more days I'll have to dedicate to redo my collection and resync everything to the device... just to see if it will go back to the state it was before. 9000+ songs is not something that I can rearrange and verify in a couple of hours.

I'll like as much as the next guy to have auto-generated playlist, browing by genre, a real tag editor and all the other cool features we've been all requesting... but right now, the only thing I really want is a software that will not mess up my collection and my device every time I try to update something. I can use third-party tools for the other stuff, but give me something that will allow me to get my music into the device properly, without problems.

...as much as I like the Zune device, the whole experience feels more like a burden right now.

re: WIth 2.3 update. Songs and Albums are messed up.

Darth,

I have the exact opposite problem.  In the Zune software on the PC, it displays the multi-disc albums perfectly, Disc1 Track1, D1T2, D1T3...D2T1, D2T2, etc.  But on the Zune 80, it displays and plays them as D1T1, D2T1, D1T2, D2T2, etc.

It has done this since I got it and the firmware updates have done nothing to fix it.  The songs were tagged in iTunes using the Disc 1 of 2 (or 3 or 4) tags.  Is the "Disc X of Y" tag not transferred to the player?  Seems like an easy fix.

Some of my tracks were tagged using iTunes and others using Windows Media Player, and as I stated before, there displayed correctly in the device, a Zune 80Gb.

Right now I'm in the process of clearing all tracks of any "extra" tag information they might have using Mp3Tag. The software shows that the main tags are correct, I'm just deleting anything "extra" like ENCODEDBY, ITCOMMENT and anything that is not "required" or "basic". After that I'll clear up the collection and the device and reload aevruthing again. I have 9,400 MP3 files, so its going to take a while.

I'll post the results here as soon as I'm done.
