re: Vista - Zune Failed
I just got my Zune 2 days ago.

After 2 hours of trying I got it installed and synced to my mom's super old computer running XP. I only got a few songs on it though, but at least I knew it worked.

I'm now trying to get it hooked up to my fiance's computer running Vista and I'm getting the same "code 10" "can't install drivers" stuff as everyone else. We've tried re-installing all of the Zune software and it hasn't worked. But, since I'm only here for a week, I didn't want to mess around on his computer changing the names of files and permissions for everything.

Has anyone found a different solution other than adding Local Service to admin?

Not everyone has the same problem.  About half the problems I've helps users with on this forum were not even Zune problems.  I didn't say the administrators group including local service wouldn't work for some.  I said it was indicative of another problem yet to be identified and reducing the security on your system with this change is not a good idea.

For those of you that still have problems, I and others on the Zune team will continue to help solve your problem.

I'd listen to Goggles on this one folks. From what I understand, adding "Local Service" to the administrator group basically means you're allowing anything currently installed on your computer to act as an administrator and do whatever it wants. In most cases this won't be a problem, and while it can indeed address some conflicts you have to consider what malware could do with this kind of opening. Yes it fixes the issue, but it puts a bullet hole in your computers security.

In the past I've found that these sort of permission issues have something to do with the User Account Control feature, try looking there for one thing. If you have UAC turned off, your computer might be confused as to just what permissions it should give to certain programs. Apparently having UAC off gives you sort of quasi-admin control, you may appear as the administrator but are missing some key admin rights.

That's just my understanding of it, I'm no expert but I just hope you guys consider carefully before pulling out a "big gun" fix like that Local Service one.

If these steps work for you, then you probably have folders or files that have incorrect security permissions set on them.  By adding local service to administrators (which I do NOT recommend) you're essentially giving it access to everything.

EVERYONE LISTEN TO AENURSTALON!!!!!! IT WOOOOOOORKS!!!!!!!

Go to Accessories, right click on Command Screen, run as administrator and enter:
net localgroup "Administrators" "NT Authority\Local Service" /add

dont listent to goggles, i have read all 20 pages of help and this guy has been giving everyone the run around, post this and post that, we are trying our best., go to windows folder find this file, etc.etc... thank god to AenursTalon, a non MS technician who helped us all with 1 post, my zune works now, i have vista home premium and with the yellow exclamation and code 10. i did all the *** that goggles told me to do, and all nothing.

worked for me, thanks!

re: Vista - Zune Failed
Update:  I believe the Zune NT Services might not have been installed, and the reinstall wasn't putting them back before I removed WMP 11.  I see them now, but am pretty sure they weren't there before.  Most specifically "Zune Bus Enumerator", as that is the only one I have Started.  Other users may want to check the existence of that service (Start/Run, Services.msc).

re: Vista - Zune Failed

I got my Zune last week, installed the software and was up and running without issues.  After ripping about 40 CD's and seeing my PC get sluggish, I decided I should try a reboot.  My PC hung on booting on the initial black with Windows XP logo screen.  After several reboots with the same result, I finally tried 'Last known good' which was successful.  However, after that time my Zune would no longer connect.  I was getting the problems commonly reported in this thread about the inability to load the device driver....could not find specified file.  I was getting a Code 16 instead of Code 10 though.  I spent several hours reading every post and getting nowhere.  I believe that somewhere along the way since I first installed the Zune that I somehow got roped into a WMP 11 upgrade.  Maybe that somehow got everything horked up.  Several reinstalls of Zune software was unsuccessful.  Adding Local Service to Admin group did not help.  I finally tried these steps which did prove to finally be successful:

  1. Uninstall Zune
  2. Uninstall WMP 11
  3. Uninstall WM Format Runtime 11
  4. Uninstall MSFT User Mode Driver Framework Feature Pack 1.0....turns out this had a ton of dependencies, so I chose to leave it installed.
  5. Reinstall Zune (using downloaded zunesetuppkg-x86.exe).  This install took about 30 minutes.  So I guess removing WMP cleaned out some junk because the previous reinstalls of Zune were done in under 10 mins.
  6. Launch Zune and plugged in device.  Device was found and driver appeared to install successfully.  At first there were issues syncing.  There were 400+ MP3's waiting to sync.  It appeared to get one done and then threw an error about unable to communicate with device.  Unplugged and reconnected the device and now its flying.

Hope this helps someone.  Goggles, if you need any other data let me know.  WinXP + SP2 + fully patched.

Should I attempt to install WMP 11 again, or is that just pushing my luck??

re: Windows XP SP2- Zune Failed

After all of that headache, I think the windows update servers were just down Sat and sunday late (12/14/2007 and 15th). After removing all the failed hardware tidbits from bad installs, I just tried zunesetuppkg-x86.exe (6.1.0022.4 (SRV03_QFE.031113-0918)) again and it worked. Zune installed, and is now syncing 30gb worth of my music. So, all you have to do is completely corrupt Zune player, uninstall and re-install a few dozen times and media player, and then fix it and you can sync all of your music. ?
I guess there is a collection tool out that I will try first next time.

I also removed that admin priv from local system and I am still up an running.

Or did a service pack uninstaller get all this fixed? 6.3.0004.0 built by: dnsrv. That was in a self extractor I did not see prior to getting zune installed.

wdf01000.sys and wdf01000.sys.

re: Vista - Zune Failed

I used to love my Zune....until a few weeks after the upgraded firmaware. Well, I only really liked it before the firmware update. It would only pull up part of my musice...not because of hd constraints either. It would fill up 22 gigs and leave a few albums off. I found that I needed to get all the meta info for my cds through media player 11. With the new firmware (2.1? or 2.2 1040 bootloader 425 on my old brick Zune 30 gig), most of the updated music came up and my Zune was finally full to the seams.

It was fine until last week. Then after a re-sync, it removed 3200 songs and kept skipping them with syncs thereafter. I renistalled Zune software...no luck. Reset Zune a few times, no luck. Deleted the library a few times, no luck (2259 songs on zune 2.9 gigs).

Now with the 177mb full package with updatesave the unable to get updates and this driver roll back at 65% install of 170 mb all packages file ZunePackage.exe (6.1.0022.4 (SRV03_QFE.031113-0918). installer is running over my user account that is an admin on this comp.

In device manager I have an unknown bus device for each install that fails. I have 1 bad hardware message per device in dev manager upon boot that pops up as well as some crap about zunecfg in an error message box with a red icon. Unknown devie in Device Manager->"System Devices".

Windows driver foundation service is running : C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k WudfServiceGroup

Put the local system account as an admin (very bad).

I can't uninstall media player 11 (or rollback). It says it does it, and it does not do a thing. Goes throguh the whole song and dance of rolling back. Reinstall over media player 11 goes fines, but never helps. Zune installer always fails at 65%.

re: Vista - Zune Failed

Not everyone has the same problem.  About half the problems I've helps users with on this forum were not even Zune problems.  I didn't say the administrators group including local service wouldn't work for some.  I said it was indicative of another problem yet to be identified and reducing the security on your system with this change is not a good idea.

For those of you that still have problems, I and others on the Zune team will continue to help solve your problem.

If these steps work for you, then you probably have folders or files that have incorrect security permissions set on them.  By adding local service to administrators (which I do NOT recommend) you're essentially giving it access to everything.

EVERYONE LISTEN TO AENURSTALON!!!!!! IT WOOOOOOORKS!!!!!!!

re: Vista - Zune Failed

I have read all the way up to page 16 on this thread. I knew there were problems out there, but, c'mon MS...

I bought my first Zune a few weeks ago. I bought my Old Lady the 2nd Gen 8 gig. The kid (no, not SALES man) standing behind the counter was adamant that they were not going to get any of the 2nd Gen 80's in. And, if there was the slight possibility of them getting any they would just get two-three and store employees would probably get those. Hey, BB, is that how you treat your customers?

But, anyway. I took the 30 and the 8 home with me. Right off, because the 30 had a CD, I ran that. Oops... wrong. This CD was not going to work with my OS (Vista, fully updated and ready to go.) So, off to Zune.net. Got the current software, and installed.

Know what?. Nothing wrong here. No problems. It worked as advertised. Everything worked with no problem(s.) So, with that out of the way, I did the Old Lady's 8 gig. Know what? Same thing. Why was I getting away with this and all these people out there in ZuneLand having all these problems?

Truthfully, I didn't care. Both of the models worked like a charm.

Then, last Saturday, November 8. 2007 I happened to be back in BestBuy. That same goofy kid saw me and told me, yeah, you guessed it. They had a sh*t load of the 80 gig models in. Only in black. But, I wanted black! Oh man, I was walking on air. I don't even remember why I went into BB, maybe the Old Lady wanted to... Whatever. I told him to get me one. He did. I paid him and walked out. oops, I gotta go back to BB and get the Old Lady. That's what she gets for wandering off on her own... hehehe

She didn't even realize I had left her. So I told her I'd be out in the truck.

Here she comes, about a half hour later pushing a cart. What the hell? Oh well, I had what I wanted. We loaded up and headed for the house, stopped to get some lunch and then really headed for the house.

She did what she needed to, I got into the 80 gig.

...

...

...

What do you mean I got to plug it in? It is plugged in. Nothing, no reorganization of the 80 gig Zune.

OK, not a problem, just a bit of tweaking here and there. Mind you, I started on the new 80 right afternoon on Saturday.

I could not get it to work at all. So I surfed the Zune boards looking for some kind of solution. Nothing could be found. I did five searches with five different wording(s) and still nothing. Like some on this thread have said, I do not have a problem with getting in there and seeing what I could find.

First off, we'll just start easy. Uninstall and re-install. Re-boot and lets see. Nope, nothing. No the 30 and the 8 would not work. Uh oh...

OK, lets try some different ports on a fresh install. Nope. Lets try a "Safe Mode" install, all the different ports. Nope.

OK, Registry Edit. (and I did this several times. I hate editing the registry.) Nope, but I did find one or two odd things. Even after deleting anything "Zune" and I did a re-install, I found that some, not all, of my "Collections" were still in the software. How odd...

Because I had done so much with my computer, Zune(s) (even "Forget This Zune") I finally got it working one morning after I had gotten out of bed. That was Thursday morning. I'll do the counting for you. That was six days later.

What did I do? Did I sleepwalk to my computer and do something I don't remember? What?

damn if I know.

I do not know what I did. I cannot tell you what I did. I hope I never have to do that again.

But, it now works.

Hey, Microsoft! Why should we give you all of our hard-earned money to you when your stuff doesn't work right out of the box? You did send a couple of Tech's our way and they did their best to help, but it shouldn't have to be that way?

Why did you decide to open a forum and let us, who spent our money on your product(s), try and help each other out? It is your product, you should open up an "e-mail" tech support at the very least. You got all the money you have because of people like us. We buy your products. We pay for your salary. We make you rich.

Why do you ignore us?

C'mon MS, help us out.

Want to bet this post will be deleted?
