re: setup tells you that you are missing a package?

I experienced the same problems and was able to resolve it by logging on my laptop under an account that had admin rights.  Once I had  admin rights, I was able to install the zune software without any problems.  It took me all day to realize this might be the problem.

re: setup tells you that you are missing a package?
Just wanted to add my two cents. I had the same missing this and that messages, talked to zune support "India" twice. They just told me to do what I already did. After  12 hours of nothing but going in circles, loading unloading, I restored my system back to the day before, did a registry clean and started over. First checked all updates from microsoft, then loaded the zune software. Guess what it went through for some reason. Except now when I click on the icon to open it it goes right to a sorry this program has to close message do you want to send a report to microsoft. Doesn't a program have to open before it can close? Any way looks like I'm taking it back. India can't help and sending microsoft a report of what's wrong isn't doing me any good. Any last minuter suggestions would be nice before I return it? Spent another 4 hours at it today, unloading loading, enough is enough.

re: setup tells you that you are missing a package?

i did what it told me to do and went to www.zune.net/setup and i installed the software but when the software finishes downloading and it opens it says

" SYSTEM UPDATES REQUIRED

Zune software installation can't continue until you've installed one or more required updates.

"This current version of windows media center isn't suppported. please ugrade your media center machine to 2005 with update 2 or later." http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=101231 "

I have gone to windows update and installed all the updates and this still comes up... what do i need to do to get my zune device and software to work!!!!?????

Windows XP + SP2

No internet access

1. Download ZunePackage_2.1.exe

2. Extract ZunePackage_2.1.exe

3. Go to x86\packages subdirectory

4. Run dotnetfx.exe

5. Run wmfdist11-windowsxp-x86-enu.exe

6. Run windowsxp-kb915865-v11-x86-enu.exe

7. Run zune-x86.msi

this works. for xp sp2.  might try somewhat of the same thing with vista on my desktop, we'll have to find out.

re: setup tells you that you are missing a package?

Ok this is really getting on my nerves...

Im running Windows XP and I keep receiving this message everytime I try to install the required software:

Setup must stop because the required package 'Creating System Restore Point' failed to install. The system cannot find the drive specified.

Error code: 0x8007000f

 Please Help. =[

re: setup tells you that you are missing a package?
This is the reason I had an iPod first of all, I had heard Zunes updates are really a lot of trouble.
And right now I'm pretty angry that I've spent over 8 hours trying to get this darned new software to work.
Thankyou Microsoft for not trying to help us in our time of need!

re: setup tells you that you are missing a package?

I had the same problem and the people that I know who have Zunes also experienced problems installing the new software. At first, I tried installing the software and at one point it gave me an error message saying I need to install a package. The thing is, I started installing it and it was going SO SLOW.. Later during the installation (I have vista) the PC said that previously, the zune software might have been installed incorrectly and that it wanted to fix the problem. I clicked "ok" and it reinstalled it which worked! It took forever for the software to work since it still has some bugs, but once it was installed, I was very pleased with the product. Hope more software updates come along soon!

P.S. so agreeing with some previous posts, this process did not work for me ..when I tried to do it, it came up as 6 hours of waitng and I have roadrunner! So good thing my PC fixed the problem for me

If everything fails, call Zune Support:

(877) GET-ZUNE or (877) 438-9863
TTY: (800) 801-1189
From outside North America: (425) 637-7096

what you can try:

 •  click here to download the whole package software instead of the software from the zune site.
 •  The file is a little big so it takes a little time. Maybe like 10-20 minutes, while it downloads get something to eat :] (thats what i did, just a tip).

• Once it's done downloading it will clos and another thing will pop up, click "run", wait and then another thing will pop up. It will say "exctract files to:"  just click ok, unless you would like the files to go to another folder.
 • It will start downloading something else. This time you can get a quick drink in your fridge, Then once its done extracting files and such you click on zune setup, and it should start.

comment: That is the whole package of the software instead of the zune.com/setup one.

Also:
 • Try restarting your computer and try downloading the software again.

comment: some technical dude asked me if i tried doing this. oh well, i guess its worth a try.

Also:
you might want to check, if you have a windows computer check for updates. click here to see what updates your computer may have and it might help fix your problem. It will check if you have an original copy of Windows or not, if you do you will get the updates if not it requires you to buy an original copy.

Thats all i have. Why doesn't ZUNE [microsoft] make this process a lot easier. To download ITUNES its one click and you already have the program. Microsoft has to make everything so complicated. ughhhH! im gonna go get orange juice, hopes this helps people. I have heard that it has helped many people. it helped my friend but for me its not working out. I'm going to have to use his computer :[

Turn on Windows Firewall and retry.  If you can't, you need to find the article that shows you how to basically re-install it.
