re: How to Reboot, Reformat, and Restore your Zune device (Now Includes Zune HD)

Thanks skipdeez! I'd always thought that "sleep" was the same as reboot, and you just saved me from having to send my 120 in. Again, many, many thanks!

Downloaded the new 4.0 Software version, too. From there on my ZUNE 80 wouldn't connect anymore.  Formatted the device but still no connection. First it kept telling me the C00D11CD error message, now that I did a system restore on my PC to get the old software version 2.1.888.2 back, the software tells me that no update is available for my device and I should try later.

Now that I have the old 2.1.888.2 software back, the system doesn't even update it to the 4.0 automatically either. It just shows me that my software is up to date.

If I connect the device as it is instructing me to, the software shows a pop up telling me:
"UPDATE UNAVAILABLE  Your device needs an update. To continue, please make sure you're connected to the internet. If you're connected and the device doesn't update, please try again later."

I've kept trying this for 2 days now, nothing. The player itself was working fine until I downloaded the new 4.0 software. Now the device is formatted, empty, and even the old above software doesn't recognize it.  Can't name or rename the zune for the same reason.

Please help if there's anything else apart from the stuff already mentioned here.

Thanks ;-),
Nick

Bumping this for the new HD owners... Note that Matt has updated it!
(Thanks, Matt!  And recovery mode is an excellent addition.)

I find that many sync problems can be fixed by simply rebooting the device, reformatting it, or reinitializing it. Here is a list of the device commands for both V1/V2 and Zune HD devices. Try these actions first if you are having a problem with syncing to your Zune device.

Reboot:

Zune HD: Press and hold power button (button on top of the device) for 10 seconds

Zune30/4/8/16/80/120 Devices: Press and hold the Back button (<-) + Up on the directional pad at the same time

Format Device from the Zune software (All devices):

Go to Settings > Device > Sync Options > Then click the "erase all content" button.

Sleep Mode:

Zune HD: Press the power button once

Zune HD: To power off, hold the power button for 3 seconds then pull down on the screen saver

Zune30/4/8/16/80/120 Devices: Press and hold Back + Down

Initializing and formatting your Zune HD Device:

To Initialize/Format - Reboot device (turn the device completely off) then when turning the device back on hold the home (center) button and media button(on the side) at the same time. This will delete all content off of the device and allows firmware reinstall.

To enter Recovery mode – Press and hold the power and media buttons for 15 seconds. The device reboots into Recovery mode (content is not erased, allows for firmware reinstall). This is a good option if you want to keep the content on your device, but reinstall the firmware.

Formatting and reinitializing your Zune30/4/8/16/80/120 Devices:
To perform the following, you must first reboot your device (hold the back button and up), and then when the screen goes black, hold the corresponding buttons until the process begins.  (“OK” refers to pressing the center of the D-Pad/Z-Pad.)

Clear Content (Format from Device) – Clears all media content from the device, but leaves the firmware intact.
V1 Devices (Zune 30): Press and hold Back + Right + OK
                V2 Devices (Zune 4/8 and 80): Press and hold Back + Play/Pause

Initialize Disk – Removes the content and the firmware.  Device will be inoperable until connected to a PC so new firmware can be installed.
V1 Devices (Zune 30): Press and hold Back + Left + OK
                V2 Devices (Zune 4/8 and 80): Press and hold Back + OK + Play/Pause

re: How to Reboot, Reformat, and Restore your Zune device

I have an 8G Zune. I cannot get it to reboot. It just goes back to the main menu. The touchpad is not working you cannot scroll using it. You can not select music videos or anything on the menu. You can not select a song you want hear either.

The back key and play pause keys work. You can see the shuffle and sound icons on the screen and you can see what song is playing. It odes not let you select the song you want to hear.

I'ver tried all of the reboot process nothing works. Any suggestions? Help!

re: How to Reboot, Reformat, and Restore your Zune device

30 GB Zune (v1) I loved this thing for the entirety of ownership, and its treated thus far well, however, lately (as in the past 6 months) it turns itself off while playing songs (immediately after finishing), no big deal. It used to turn back on fine and play fine as well (it was in the hold position when turning itself off for extended periods of time, it's my work zune 8 hrs a day). Now the reason I bring that up is that lately (past week) the zune has just crapped out on me. I've restarted numerous times, erased all content (when it doesn't freeze while doing this, which forces me to let the battery die) but have not erased the firmware or whatever that third step is, and it's not for a lack of trying. The damn thing won't start the menu when I restart it lately, and puts up a lighted black screen. Whatever it clears (which it currently has nothing on it) it takes forever to do it. The USB cable and the sync cable won't link up to my computer properly (I have to figit with it, proper position, and even then it'll usually only charge). The wall socket charger works fine with a loud buzzing from it is all.

Seems to me my issue is that I've used my product a lot and obviously it's taken some abuse over the years.

My music plays fine when it syncs, plays fine on my zune program and would appear the music isn't my issue. The device to which a hammer seems like the most useful tool to me. As far as satisfaction with its current state is concerned. But I like this thing it's grown on me like a rash, and it's pink. Any useful tips would be amazing as I can't figure it out. If you need further information just ask and ye shall receive.

re: How to Reboot, Reformat, and Restore your Zune device

Do you mean that I have to perform these commands during the reboot progress bar?  I thought I tried that, but I guess I wasn't fast enough.

I ended up doing the reformat through the Zune software, as I have done before.  I just want to prevent this problem from coming back.  Is there any difference in reformating via the software versus doing it through the device?

Those button combinations do nothing.  I can only reboot my device with the buttons.  Pressing Back and Right keys didn't do anything.  I even held for a few seconds.

Sounds like you missed the step about rebooting the device, and then using the init disk key commands a the right part of the reboot...

Are you sure you are doing it during the right portion of the reboot process?
