re: Vista - Zune Failed

I don't know if adding Users at that point will solve problem, and if you want to make the registry change, it's at your own risk.

If you're willing to continue, here's what to do.  (and thanks for helping to track this problem down)

For the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0b91a74b-ad7c-4a9d-b563-29eef9167172} key, go to permissions and advanced.

Add Red-PC\Users and select to Allow Query Value, Enumerate Subkeys, Notify, and Read Control.

If it still doesn't work, get a new capture of Process Monitor and look for the next problem.

re: Vista - Zune Failed
The three before and the three after do NOT have Users listed, and all other permissions are the same. I didn't know how far back to look, but I checked 3 on each side.

Here is the image of advanced permissions:

re: Vista - Zune Failed

Also, looking at the permissions for the entries before and after {0B8732A6-AF74-498C-A251-9DC86B0538B0}, do those have the same permissions (Users missing)?

re: Vista - Zune Failed

Users permission could be needed, but I'd recommend not adding it yet until we can see the problem in more detail.  If you/I get it wrong, it may be very difficult to fix.

Could you click on the advanced button and send a screen shot of those permission details?

re: Vista - Zune Failed
There are permissions for:

Restricted (has Read)
System (has Full Control and Read)
Red (has Full Control and Read)
Administrators (has Full Control and Read)

"Red" is the name of the PC and my fiance's username

Do I need to add Users?

Yes, the screen shot helps.  Could you look in the registry at that key and see what te permissions are for it?

Run regedit, select Edit -> Find, and enter {0b91a74b-ad7c-4a9d-b563-29eef9167172}.

When it finds it, right click on that entry and select permissions.

Are SYSTEM and Users included in the permissions? (you can send another screen shot)

I wasn't sure what exactly you were looking for, so I thought this would be easier than posting just a few.

I really appreciate any help you can give me!

re: Vista - Zune Failed

Process Name: WUDFHost.exe
Operation: RegOpenKey
Path: HKCR\CLSID\{a bunch of numbers and letters I don't want to type out}

Could you post this one in it's entirety and include a couple right before it?

re: Vista - Zune Failed
For those of you who added Local Service as an admin, have you gone back and taken the rights away after the drivers have installed and the Zune starts working correctly?

I know this computer was infected with malware a few weeks ago, and I really hesitate to leave the security open in case there's still some bad stuff on there somewhere that might get set loose again.

re: Vista - Zune Failed
These had Access Denied:

Process Name: rundll32.exe
Operation: RegDeleteValue
Path: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\ProxyBypass

Process Name: rundll32.exe
Operation: RegDeleteValue
Path: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\IntranetName

Process Name: WUDFHost.exe
Operation: RegOpenKey
Path: HKCR\CLSID\{a bunch of numbers and letters I don't want to type out}

TeaTimer was also showing Access Denied, but we turned it off for now.

re: Vista - Zune Failed

You could try adding the Local Service to the administrators group as a test to see if it fixes the problem and then remove it.

We have identified one case where adding Everyone to the permissions for C:\ fixed the problem also. This still isn't the best solution but is better than adding Local Service to Administrators.  Let us know if that helps.

Here is method to help determine where the permission problem is occuring.

Download Process Monitor from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx
Run Process Monitor.
Uncheck File -> Capture Events
Under Filter -> Filter... add the following filter to the list: “Process Name is not WUDFHost.exe then exclude”
Select Edit -> Clear Display
Check File -> Capture Events
Connect the device and reproduce the problem.
Uncheck File -> Capture Events
Save the log file as a PML file (the default).
Look in the log for a Result of ACCESS DENIED.  The Path will be where the permission problem exists.
