re: FIXED!! Zune 30 frozen screen

Seeing as how these locked up ZUNEs are heating up, either due to their drives running (hear the whine? feel the heat?), or the possibility of reaching a battery overcharge state due to loss of power management software control it may be best to let them shut down by letting their batteries run down. I don't see Microsoft coming up with a fix anytime soon. When they do they will probably require the units be shipped for repair or replacement. I'm pulling the plug on mine for the time being.

I'm going to laugh when M$ tells people to send them in to be repaired, and all the ones that were opened are voided for repair.

Your zune will need a "hard reset."

To do this, use a small screwdriver to pop off the plastic shielding where the zune cable plugs into and remove the two screws on either side of the plug. Next pop the cover off and locate the battery plug at the top left corner of the zune, using your screw driver, pop the cable connection half way off, and do this to the other plug on the right side. Wait 3 seconds, then push down the right connector and then the left battery connecter. Your zune should start up immediately. Press the backing of the zune down (make sure headphone jack is aligned) and put the screws and cover back in place.

It's an easy process but if you're unsure don't attempt it if you think you'll screw it or something. :)

DO NOT DO THIS!!  THIS CAN VOID YOUR ZUNE WARRANTY AND COULD POTENTIALLY MAKE THE ISSUE FAR WORSE!!  IF YOU CHOOSE TO AND YOU BREAK YOUR ZUNE, DON'T BLAME ANYONE BUT YOURSELF!!

If you want to see a demo on battery replacement go to you tube and search for zune battery.  There are several videos that shows how to open the case.

re: FIXED!! Zune 30 frozen screen
Just worked on my Zune, and yes my Zune had been sitting in the cradle for about three days without playing. Sad to say that it froze again and don't know why. I have rebooted a couple of times and still freezes up.

I'm holding off trying it too "EinsteinR", for three reasons. One, I may break something in the process. Two, although I'm one month outside of warranty, any chance for repair or recompense from Microsoft may be hampered on disassembly. And three, from what I've read so far this fix has not yet proven permanent.

I found a online video demonstating a battey change but can't recall the exact location...but it detailed the two screws and gently prying the sides....I'm going to hold off so i don't ruin it.

It's occurred to me that this problem must be date/time related, in which case any sort of a fix outside of a software/firmware one may be short lived at best (could this be just the need for a new day/year?).

re: FIXED!! Zune 30 frozen screen
A short while later...

It does seem that just having the Zune connected will charge the battery a bit. which is good.

However the hard reset is not working for me anymore. Which is really bad.

I can get past the initial loading screen. The bar goes up fast about 9/10ths of the way. Does a last little push. Click click whir of the hard drive and ...blank screen. Nothing. nada.

Plug it back on to charge some more and it goes back to freezing.

I'm not happy.

I curse the self copulation of your lousy record collection
