Yes, SpyBot is on the computer too.

I'm also currently adding my music! Thank you so much for the help!

Do you have SpyBot Search and Destroy installed, or just the TeaTimer part?

re: Vista - Zune Failed

You can try removing them, but I'd be really surprised if it still works the next time you connect.  You can remove it from HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0b91a74b-ad7c-4a9d-b563-29eef9167172} since the one at CLSID should cover that one also.

However, I wouldn't be anywhere near as concerned about having Users in the CLSID permissions as adding LOCAL SERVICE to the Administrators group.

We'll continue to try to find the root problem, so check back for more info.

*wakes up from fainting*

It worked! My Zune is now connected!

Adding Users at the CLSID level worked. Now, I suppose the trick is to find out why, and how this error happened in the first place, huh?

So now that the Zune is conected, should I remove those permissions and try again? I'll be around for a while yet, if there's still anything I can do to help you figure out this problem.

Nope... TeaTimer was the only one, and since we started running Process Monitor, I've been turning it off.

Leave OneCare as-is for now.  We're trying to see if we can get it to reproduce the problem.  I assume you had the problem before OneCare was installed?  Did you have any others installed previously that you have since removed?

Funny that you mentioned OneCare... My fiance installed it just this morning. Should I tweak the settings while trying to install my Zune?

We turned off TeaTimer for now, but those are the only two security programs he has on this computer.

re: Vista - Zune Failed

Read in this case is a general term that includes those others that make up the read "group".  Without them you're likely to have more subtle problems further in the process.  Since you didn't have Users before, you can simply remove Users and you'll be back to the original state without any of those settings.

Do you have any application installed that may "tighten" security such as OneCare or other simialr products?

Yes, the one that failed before did suceed this time.

Would it be possible to just add the Read right to Users, since that's the "Desired Access"? Or should I still add all of the same ones as before? I'm just getting worried about the complexity of removing the rights later.

I should say that adding Users to CLSID would only be a temporary fix to try to find the root problem.  I don't think it should be left there, but I think it would be much safer than adding LOCAL SERVICE to Administrators.

re: Vista - Zune Failed

Question: Did the one that was failing now succeed?

I think the Users permission was removed from CLSID and all the ones below that lost it as well since they woudl have inherited it from there.  If you're very careful, try adding Users up one level at CLSID.

re: Vista - Zune Failed
Still didn't work... I got the same code 10 error as well.

I ran Process Monitor and got a few new errors:

svchost.exe RegOpenKey HKCR\CLSID\{a47979d2-c419-11d9-a5b4-001185ad2b89} Desired Access: Read

WUDFHost.exe RegOpenKey HKCR\CLSID\{0c15d503-d017-47ce-7b3f978721cc} Desired Access: Read

jusched.exe RegOpenKey HKLM\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\Java Update\Policy (A bunch of them - no picture)

rundll32.exe RegDeleteValue (same paths as before)

I checked permissions for the first two, and they were missing Users just like the other one.

*I just ran it again, and I did not get any more "jusched.exe" errors. I have no idea what that was...
