Make sure that when you plug it into the computer that it is pluged into one of you back USB ports.  if you charge it with the front ports or extension port the zune will not beable to get enough power to charge which causes freezing.  at least this was my problem.

Well after sending my Zune 30GB in for warranty because it kept rebooting, I got a whole new one back in the mail.  There was a message that said they couldn't fix the old one, so they sent me a whole new one :)

So far, it's been about a month, and the thing hasn't rebooted on me at all!

There are reports of skipping when playing lossless on the device.  It could be related....
I doubt you have to go all the way down to 128K.  I have all my ripped music at 'high quality' WMA VBR.  They end up at over 300Kbps and never skip or restart.

I bought an 80 on day one, and it did this about a week in.  I took it back and got a new one, and a week in again it did it.  I haven't had it do it in over a year now.  I went into the software and had it transcode all the files that were >128Kbs down to 128Kbs, and once I did that I never had a problem again.

Why fix something when you can rebuild it from scratch, it's funner.

I never had any problems with my zune if I was using a docking station to listen to music or books. Once I started using ear phones or in my car going through the ear jack on top, my zune started rebooting. I was able to switch my 30 GB Zune at the store I purchased it, under an additional warrenty I had purchased and the new unit started doing it also, only when utilizing the ear jack on top. So i don't know what to try next. It is an issue that no one has a fix for......it is very frustrating.......

@Peterson: 1. All firmware versions 2. Occasionally reboots while doing nothing, otherwise it does it during music playback 3. All content. I use to think it was related to mp3 playback, but it reboots during playback of wma files ripped with the Zune software from my CDs.

This has also been happening to me at times with my 30GB Zune.

I am going to try to send it in for warranty repair to see if it can be fixed.

I bought an 8G Zune on Sunday,  downloaded the software (version 2.5 (1614)on Monday,  and plugged it in to a back USB port to charge on Tuesday.   I synched it with my collection on Wednesday, unplugged it and tried to listen to a song for the first time today.

It played one bar and rebooted. 

It has subsequently rebooted -

  • when I have been scrolling through the menus , 
  • when I have just touched  the device, 
  • when I have tried to change the radio station, 
  • when I have tried to listen to the radio
  • when I have tried to scroll through pictures etc etc.

I deleted my entire collection and loaded just a few mp3s and it rebooted again on the first bar of the first song. It continues to reboot in the areas I have mentioned above.    I have seen in excess of 30 reboots today

One thing I just noticed is that it seems to be stable if it is plugged into the USB port!!! however I want a portable device not plugging earphones into my PC! I have raised repair record ref # 107-728-9312.  with support. They will mail me a prepaid shipping box.

For those people still seeing reboots, can you provide some more details to help us out.

 

1. What is the firmware version on your device?  See Settings | About | Zune

2. Does the device reboot when the device is doing nothing?  If not, when is the device doing when it reboots?

3. If it reboots during playback, is it specific to one piece of content or does it happen on all content.

Preach brother preach!!!.....i'm getting pretty annoyed with this. And I was a big supported for the zune when everyone had an IPod. But now.....i dont even know what to say...I think its the firmware and Microsoft needs to fix it Now
