in addition to my previous post...a search function on the zune is sorely missed!

re: We're listening!
I know a lot of these have been suggested already so if they have been, I'm just agreeing with what others have suggested. Also I've only had my Zune since Christmas, so some of these may be there but I just haven't found them yet.

- PC Software - ability to edit metadata (like you can in media player or itunes)
- PC Software - multi song edit (like you can in media player or itunes)
- PC Software - ability to view and sort by more meta tag and file information (like you can in media player or itunes)
- PC Software - in fact the ability to use media player instead of the super dumbed down Zune software!!
- PC Software - auto playlists!!!
- PC Software - ability to group songs (i.e. in shuffle mode always play the grouped songs together)

- Zune - shuffle by album (i.e. pick a random album and then play it start to finish in order - the ipod can do this)
- Zune - ability to add a song to the quick list (or any other list) while it is playing
- Zune - auto playlists!!!
- Zune - EQ
- Zune - Ability to group songs (i.e. in shuffle mode always play the grouped songs together)
- Zune - Ability to create playlists (other than the quick list) on the device
- Zune - A "Shuffle All" menu option for playlists

- Marketplace - ability to buy through a browser not just through the software
- Marketplace - get rid of the points system
- Marketplace - browsing is very difficult and frustrating because if you page down through many artists or albums, then click on one to check it out and then page back, you have to start at the top again

I'd really love it if my zune 80 could be sync'd using my windows media player, like my creative mp3 player. I had 11000 songs and vids all labeled and sorted into files that I liked and when I sync'd my zune it didn't follow my logic.

What gives aren't both zune and media player Microsoft?

Amen Brother!!!  I have posted this in my wish lists as well.  Why oh why do I need two Microsoft products running on my PC, especially since media player is mature, stable, well known, widely distributed, and loved already...

re: We're listening!

Hey, so we're a family of SIX and everyone (and mean everyone!!) has an iPod except for me.  I really like my Zune a lot!  I got the 30Gb one, so it's a bit bulkier than the iPods the rest of the fam has...but that's okay.

Here's some things that I would LOVE to see fixed/changed:

  • I'm really frustrated with videos syncing with the device.  Some make it...some don't.  Even converting the file to a different format doesn't seem to work sometimes.  Some of them won't even show up in the Zune desktop software after being added to a monitored folder.  I'm not sure if it's an encoding problem on the vids I'm using or what.  They'll play on my desktop, but that's it.  I don't use DIV-X or anything wierd like that.  Maybe there's a codec being used that's not compatible with Zune...?  ...not sure how to look for that.  However, even podcasts don't always work.  I love watching video podcasts, but it's kinda hit-and-miss as to which ones will actually sync on the device.  It's really frustrating sometimes!!!!
  • iPod has a "Recently Added" automatic playlist that shows things that have recently been added to the device.  It's a great way to listen to just the new stuff you've added.  I wish the Zune had that feature!
  • Another automatic playlist that would be nice would be like a "My Favorites" or something.  There's a rating system on the Zune (and the desktop software) for "like it" and "don't like it"...but I can't really see what rating the songs has to do with anything.  Does the Zune play songs you mark as "like it" more often?  Does it remove songs from the device that you mark as "don't like it"?  Those features would be cool, if they're there...but I'd want to know about it before it started removing songs or playing stuff more frequently or something like that.
  • Actually, it would be really nice to be able to tell the Zune to remove a song (or maybe a whole album?) from the device.  If I import a CD, chances are only a few of the songs off the album are ones I'm going to be listening too.  It'd be nice to be able have all those "filler songs" off the album taken off the next time the device syncs up.
  • When I'm listening to a playlist on the Zune and want to add it to my Quick List (I'm using Quick List as a way of tagging songs that I really like and want to put on a special "Favorite Songs" playlist later...because I have such a huge library), there's no way to do it directly.  Instead, I have to go to the artist and add it from the songs under the artist.  The "go to artist" feature sometimes works, but sometimes just takes me to giant list named "Unknown Album".  Some of my songs don't have the album information...but they all have artist and title.  So, that's a little frustrating.
  • I would love to customize my own background on the device.  There's some different styles I can choose from, but a lot of them are awfully "girly" and I'd like to have something that suits my personality a little better.  I haven't seen a way to do that yet...maybe I'm missing something.
  • I don't really "get" the whole "Social"-thing.  I like the idea of being able to network with other Zune users, but I don't really see how to find other users in my area, share my same tastes in music, or anything like that.  It'd be nice if someone could point me to a URL somewhere that kinda lays it out for me so I can have fun with that aspect of my Zune too.
  • iPod has a TON of accessories (and I mean TON!!!)  I know that most of it is 3rd party, but I really hate that there's not very many accessories for sale out there...at least in the stores.  And it seems like the stuff that is out there is so darned expensive!!  I would love to get some sort of dock for my Zune, but I'm gonna have to wait for the price to come down a bit before I'll be able to afford one (the one I want is currently $100!!!)
  • I got one of your leather cases for my Zune (Belkin makes it...the one with a belt clip) and hate it!  I have a really hard time pressing the directional button because the leather is raised so high and it doesn't sit right on my Zune, so all the buttons don't line up with the holes right.  I've tried to stretch the leather out so it fits better, but most of the time, I take it out of the leather case when I have to use it because it frustrates me so much!

All-in-all, I really like my Zune!  I think it's a really cool device with a pretty intuitive UI.  I like the sound settings and quality of playback. If you could address the above issues I'm having, I might just switch the wife and kids all over to Zunes down the road. <grin>

Thanks guys!  If more iPod users tried your Zune, you might actually give Apple a run for their money!

re: We're listening!

I would like to add my voice to those requesting support for audible.com. I have had a subscription to audible.com for over four years. I graduated from the Otis to the iPod. I now have a Zune80. The only reason I still use my iPod is for the audible books. As I 'read' two books a month via audible, that this is a significant feature for me. Second to audible, I would like to be able to use the library downloadable books.

Please, please please!!! We want Audible.com!

re: We're listening!

Things to add? I can think of a few

1.       Contacts – basically all I want is for my messenger contact list to sync with the zune so I can view them on the zune.  Adding contacts, may be difficult on the zune, though with the Zune touch pad, navigation through an on-screen keyboard wouldn’t be bad.

2.       An audio book section, where mp3’s and WMA’s indicated as audio books would be in its own library.  Also within this feature book marking, much like the resume feature in the podcast section.

3.       A calendar that would sync with Windows Calendar, Windows Live Calendar, or the MS office calendar.

4.       Revert back to the five star rating system, which is a much better system.  Also with this allow us to play all the songs of a same rating.

5.       An option to display both my Xbox gamer tag, and my Zune tag and view the tags of others who are nearby.

6.       Ability to adjust text size in the zune player’s menus

7.       Maybe even Messenger, but that again runs into the keyboard issue.  It might work out better than I think.  Just a thought

I think these would be very good additions to the zune, which would tie Xbox LIVE, Zune, Windows Live, and my PC closer together.  I love my Zune already, but these features would make it ridiculously the portable device.

re: We're listening!
I realize that our artist plays shows only the songs we've played in the last 28 days.  So in other words, if we didn't listen to one of a myriad of artists in our collection in the past 28 days, all plays we ever made by them are wiped.  Maybe this is to give others a chance to be on the top listeners list for each band, I don't know.  What I would like to see is our artist plays on our own personal profile pages not be wiped.  Sure, the top listeners lists can continue to show plays only within the past 28 days to keep things fresh, but keeping the plays on our personal profile pages is necessary.  Why?  When someone invites you to be their friend, the first thing you do is check their artist plays to see if they have similar tastes.  Refreshing the top listeners list is reasonable, I can understand that.  But our own personal profiles?  That ruins the sense of expression.  If our profile artist plays is wiped as if it was some top listening list (which is not - that's what the top listeners lists are for), not only does it frustrate finding friends with similar tastes as you, it pretty much kills the whole point of expression.  Do what you will with the top listeners lists, but keep our personal profile pages just that - personal.
