re: **CRASH ON START FIX!/Event Viewer Info For MS**
Sorry if I sound rude, and I know it's not Zune's softwares fault, it's how Microsoft won't let Vista users repair .net framework.

I mean honestly you can say it's a non-supported and non-recommended fix because it could cause the software to malfunction in other ways,
but the only PlatformNotSupported exception's im getting running the software with the fix intact are caused by the same exact version of mscorlib.dll reported by event viewer log attachments to be in the exact same folder so it's the same exact thing causing both errors to occur.

Going by what event viewer is reporting at least, even if it didnt cause the software to crash on start and you didnt have to change compatibility modes, it would still cause the podcast crash, and most likely the marketplace error as well.

With that said, and because .net framework 2.0 can not be repaired in any version of Vista, it's the only other option currently available other then doing a complete repair-install of Vista.

Honestly, I really hope there will be a MS hotfix soon to patch mscorlib.dll vs2.0 and/or it's dependants so that it would be supported and recommended and that I could not only fix my own issue, but everyone else could fix theirs as well, but until then I can't do without my Zune being sync'd, and alot of other people out there on Vista can't either.

So either make this a sticky and officially support and recommend this as a temporary and non-damaging solution, or give us another option other then repair-installing our entire OS.

re: **CRASH ON START FIX!/Event Viewer Info For MS**
Issues I'm having even with the work around:

- When I try to view the marketplace it tells me that it's temporarily unavailable. The software does not crash though.
- When I subscribe to a podcast it crashes after about 8 seconds. The error it gives me there is the following which appears to be caused by the same exact file that caused the software to crash on start to begin with, and the file is in it's 2.0 version which is the same version that went sour and caused the crash on start, meaning it's a .net 2.0 component used during the podcast download/syncing process and causing it to crash out, not caused by my workaround, but the original issue itself.

Also I'm pretty sure the software uses .net 2.0 components so people can browse the marketplace as well since I have all ports open, windows firewall on with both zune services and zune.exe as comlpete exceptions on all port ranges, and have my router's firewall disabled, full permissions, ownership, and admin rights for everything on my entire hard drive and it's still not working.

Other then those two things the software is completly stable and does what I want it too, and is better then not being able to sync at all or void my warentee by doing the downgrade hack.

Grimday:
Yes, for Vista users running in Windows 2000 compatibility mode actually works for most as a work around as long as it is this specific event crash.error.

The problem is caused by the mscorlib.dll file (it's the one it lists, but it of course could be one of it's dependants) in WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\ (.net framework 2.0) and running it in compatibility mode with Windows 2000 causes Vista to revert to using .net framework 1.1 for the older version of that file and it's dependants.

Since there is no current way to repair any of the .Net Framework installations, not even 1.1 or 3.0 let alone 2.0 in Vista without a complete repair install of the entire operating system it's the only hot fix I could honestly come up with for Vista users, and it does not appear to be causing the program to have any other issues that I have noticed.

XP users can repair .net framework 2.0, or uninstall/reinstall it, but us Vista users are stuck.

re: **CRASH ON START FIX!/Event Viewer Info For MS**

Hi,

We are currently investigating the original issue (BTW, thanks for the Event Viewer information). But, the subsequent issues you are seeing are all a consequence of running Zune in the Windows 2000 compatibility mode (which is not supported by Zune and causes the PlatformNotSupported exception to be thrown in different places).

Does reverting the compatibility mode causes the application to crash again on startup?

In any case, running with compatibility mode enabled is not a recommended solution...

  Thanks,

If someone else has this issue, please verify that this works for you, I would really like to know.

**CRASH ON START FIX!/Event Viewer Info For MS**

- QUICK FIX-
(Sticky this is you must)

For those of you that have Windows Vista 32bit Edition and the new Zune.exe crashes on start every single time and uninstall/reinstall is not working for you, rightclick the icon/shortcut and run it in compatibility mode with Windows 2000. This fixes it for the most part! However, personally I still can not sync podcast subscriptions without it crashing, but at least I could sync and update my firmware!

Microsoft:
Here are the Event Viewer dumps that we are getting:
Crash on start:
The description for Event ID 1000 from source Application Error cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:
