re: setup tells you that you are missing a package?

I have run into the same 0x80070643 error as a lot of people here while trying to install the Zune 2.3 software on Windows XP Professional. I had just uninstalled the previous 2.1 version (that was working fine) and then could not get the new version to install. I would consistently run into this error at approx 65% of the way into the install:

Installation Failed

Setup must stop because the required package 'Zune' failed to install.
Operation 'InstallDriver' has finished with result 0x80070643
Operation 'RemoveDriver' has finished with result 0x80004005
DIFXAPP: Rollback failed with error 0x2
Error Code: 0x80070643

I researched the forums high and low and tried EVERY single suggestion to no avail.
I've got all the Windows Updates. I've got the full 173meg Zune package file, I HAD the software successfully running on the machine. I uninstalled it while troubleshooting a marketplace issue (see below for that).

Well, after a lot of trial and error, I figured out what was going on and wrote a small program that fixes it. I am not saying it fixes it in all instances, but from what I have been researching, most people who are encountering this error are getting it at exactly the same point during the install that I have so odds are pretty good this is your solution too.

http://zuneprep.zapto.org - this has only been tested on XP and it immediately fixed my problem. It it works for you, excellent. If it doesn't, well, you probably have a bigger issue than just a few messed up files.

btw - the original issue I was troubleshooting was I was getting no images for anything on marketplace. Turning off graphic acceleration didn't work, clearing cookies/cache, usual troubleshooting, didn't work. A Winsock fix worked. http://socks.stufftoread.com

Thank you, and good night!

McD.

Hope this helps, McD. - http://zuneprep.zapto.org

re: setup tells you that you are missing a package?
My schools using that but with my school they don't block the normal update. I have to click "check online for windows updates" and I'm out in the windows woods . Im still grumping that because my school uses it and it says a file was not installed and I click try again it says "what file? your domain is happy go away" (I'm sorry i dont speak true technical jargen but i hope you  understand where im leading from my expanation)

I didnt mean Wsus was a bug I just started thinking out loud because another program I use has a bug site and I just started thinking how much of the reports here are getting heard.

Thanks. This isn't a bug.   A home user gets patches by connecting to Windows Update.  But in a corporate environment with sophisticated interconnected applications, allowing open access to Windows Update is risky.  It takes time to test the patches, and only some ever get rolled out to the company population.  WSUS (Windows Server Update Service) is like a local Windows Update that the corporate IT geeks use to roll out select updates after they've tested them.  The problem is that the Zune installer apparently uses Windows Update.  No Windows Update?  Install fails...

The message I need to get to the Zune Product Team though, is this:  1)  Half (or more?) of the flying corporate population are carrying MP3 players.  2)  Podcasts are a brilliant way to time shift news, catch up on things, etc.  3)  Most of that flying corporate population would love to guest sync on their corporate laptop...except most of them can't.  See WSUS above...  I can charge up, listen to music, etc.  but I want my podcasts, too.  [end whine]

Im not sure what wsus is but I would assume since your getting the full file with patches it shouldnt make a differance since all the update zune think are needed are all together.  If youve got the hardisk space it wouldnt be bad to try. It would be one less thing to narrow when the Developers come pulling throught the pages for tested things.

That reminds me is there a zune bug post site. We're posting all this in here when other sites will mention to post so the people neding the data can find it quickly?

If you've experienced problems installing the latest Zune software and setup tells you that you are missing a package, please download the following bundled installer.

http://download.microsoft.com/download/4/5/7/4578afd6-a0b6-4724-89e5-ba9395ea6a6d/ZunePackage.exe

1. download package

2. run package to extract to your computer

3. go to directory that you extracted to, run startzune.exe

4. proceed with installation, following instructions

Anyone know if this will solve the problem(s) installing Zune software onto a corporate laptop that uses WSUS instead of Windows update?

I added the .bak and installed the software update with no problem. Hopes this helps some of the other people who have spent hours on this problem.. Thanks Microsoft for all of your help.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!

Geez!  Why can people figure this crap out better than the developers of the software?  At the rate they're going, I believe any of us are as qualified as Zune development team members to work for Microsoft :-/

In any case, your suggestion worked beautifully.

re: setup tells you that you are missing a package?
yes when i try to install it, it shows this message to me but where do i get this update?
if you dont mind tellign me.
A problem that i have also is that my computer is not connected to the internet (not anymore)
so when i baught my zune i installed it to my PC and got my music, well I connected my zune to my friend's computer and I guess it updated it. but didnt know that i needed that particular update on my computer to use my zune it, creating problems... well i transfered the zune software download that this site gives to my PC, then tried to install it but it gave me this message...

"Zune software installation can't continue until you've installed one or more required updates

Windows update must be updated to run this program"

Now i don't really know  how to do this... any help on where to get the update for Windows Update?
