re: Malfunction
A failure seems to be the case. Alright, so is calling tech support my only option, and in that case, is it the device or software I should query?

You can try
restoring your device
software, but you may be having a hardware failure...

Malfunction
Something happened today with my Zune for currently unexplainable reasons:
When I turned it on to play a song, it said something along the lines of "Cannot play because song is missing." Afterwards I turned it back on, and it is currently showing a Zune icon with an X on the screen, the number 5 in a circle, and says to contact support.
What am I supposed to do to fix this problem, and what is the problem to begin with?
