3 weeks later, and my device still hasn't logged a single play, even though I listen to it every day. What steps do I have left to take to get this working?

Re: re: Do you think your device plays don't count?

Device plays are not updating for me either.  I changed the regional settings on my pc to US.  After unlinking and relinking my zune tag, I now have the zune marketplace available on the zune, but plays from the device are still not updating.  I'm going trough my collection for unsupported characters. Anyone knows what characters are not supported?

re: Do you think your device plays don't count?
Sorry for the cross-post, but I wasn't getting responses in the other thread.

Even though my Zune device plays are finally being counted, there is a new wrinkle.  Often, the songs played on the Zune show up as "unknown album."  I did not use the Zune software to rip the files in question but the tags show up fine in the software application and on the Zune.  Also, if I play the same song in the software, the album is recognized for that play.  Here is a screenshot:

screenshot

Why would this happen?  I think it has something to do with how I navigate to the song.  I usually browse by artist and listen to the entire album.  It seems that if I choose an artist that only has one album and I hit "play all" I get the unknown album issue.  If I go the extra step to choose the album and THEN hit "play all" the album is recognized.  So I guess the play-count does not use the tags of the songs but somehow records how the song is accessed.

Also, why are some plays greyed out and some not?

Mine started working, but I can't explain why.  I uninstalled and reinstalled the Zune software and I wiped my player back to default, etc.  It didn't seem to fix the issue so I gave up.  Later (weeks later?) I noticed that my play count was climbing.

Is there a fix for this yet?  I reimaged my laptop and it still is not working so obviously it is something to do with the player itself.

"Next" is wait. We don't have further troubleshooting steps users can take.

Try this for me - assuming your "recently played" is updating from the software.

Connect your device to your PC. Log in.

Go to "settings," "device," "linking."

If it says "Your device is linked to Zune Tag <whatever>", click "remove link."

Otherwise, check the radio button for "Link my Zune to a Zune Tag"

You can choose whether or not to enable Marketplace purchases, that's not relevant here. (The checkbox below)

Click "Next" at the bottom.

Sign in and hit "confirm."

You should now see "Your Zune is now linked to <tag name>."

Unplug your device, play some music on it.

Then plug your device back in and sync.

Post here whether this worked to upload device plays.

Hmmm, cheers for that. The Zune software definitely wasn't running on my work pc (otherwise I wouldn't have been able able to listen to stuff on the Zune while it was connected via usb) but the desktop software is installed on the pc. Wouldn't mind trying it on a pc where the zune software wasn't itstalled to see if the device is still recognised.

^ Not sure about that (because I haven't tried it myself).  I know for certain it will update in these two ways, though:

1) If your Zune device is connected to the PC while the Zune Software is running.
2) If the wifi on your Zune is enabled, and your Zune connects to the Wireless Marketplace using a local wifi network.

While I'm at work my I generally listen to music from my zune while it's attached to my computer via usb cable. Am I right in thinking that if you have your Zune linked to your Zune tag, this updates your play count as you listen via the usb link if the desktop software isn't running?
