Ok, I did a system restore and it seems to have removed it from the command prompt because the zune doesn't work again.  I really wish Microsoft would get off their duffs and fix this problem!

If these steps work for you, then you probably have folders or files that have incorrect security permissions set on them.  By adding local service to administrators (which I do NOT recommend) you're essentially giving it access to everything.

This worked for me also using a Dell 1501 Laptop using Vista Home Premium.  So obviously it's a Zune/Vista security issue that needs resolved.  Instead of allowing everything access, it just needs to allow Zune access.  Zune/Microsoft needs to figure that out and fix it.  I shouldn't have to mess with my Command prompt just to make a product work. Are there any Microsoft Support Staff looking at the forum? Do any of them respond anymore?

re: Cannot Install Zune Driver

I have tried all the steps in this thread and still have no luck.  Still get the message that it cannot install this hardware.  Digging in, there are alot of reg settings that are not there, that are in my kids computer for the zune software.

Looks like I'm stuck.  As much as I thought I liked the zune, this is just unacceptable.

re: Vista - Zune Failed
I know this topic was mostly about issues with Vista, but some of the posts mentioned XP and possible fixes. Are there any updates to the XP errors? Are we out in the cold for using the old OS? I am having all of the issues that everyone else has in regards to XP seeing the zune, then ding donging over and over again. Not even a fresh new install of my OS worked. The device works on another computer but not mine... just like everyone elses problems. I have been reading many posts on this forum of people having this issue, but none of the fixes are working or there just arent any fixes.

Yes, the screen shot helps.  Could you look in the registry at that key and see what te permissions are for it?

Run regedit, select Edit -> Find, and enter {0b91a74b-ad7c-4a9d-b563-29eef9167172}.

When it finds it, right click on that entry and select permissions.

Are SYSTEM and Users included in the permissions? (you can send another screen shot)

Look at page 24 for the start of this solution for anyone just tuning in at the end! Start with getting Process monitor ( there's a link back in pg 24 or so). Find out what the heck is not allowed access. Then do this with whatever your number in brackets are..

This did work for me but it missed a few steps so I muddled with it.

I would export your current registry ( it saves it kinda) onto your desktop where you can find it. This way you can go back to the old registry if you mess up some way or feel you may have messed up and need a start over.

Then do the registry thing.

In order to add users, make sure to put in " Enter Object names to select" : Users.

That made a new class pop up and I added those permissions to it after I created it. I then unplugged my zune and replugged in, rebooting it as well. My pc then saw it and installed it. I could then sync to my zune software.

I am currently using Windows Vista. I think it's the 32-bit home version.

I will look again to see anything new! I'm glad I read on.

Thanks for everyone taking time to try to figure this out, especially when some people were being less than courteous to the help. I think software is a lot like that.. I still think that some of the rights and safety features of Vista are a bit too strict... I'm sure this problem happens with a lot of things just for something like this. Hopefully things get ironed out.

Update to the Above:

Unfortunately, the driver installed but then the Zune software ignored my zune. I tried reinstalling software and plugging and unplugging the zune and rebooting both it and my computer.

I did the old bad fix.. and it saw it again totally by both pc and zune software. I tried checking process monitor to see if anything new happened before I did all that and nothing came up. I'm puzzled. I'll work on it more so I don't have to have a hole in security..

re: Vista - Zune Failed

Oops I read through to my last post just now.. I'm going to try and give a try to the other solution that the staff gave by giving permissions only to the things that needed it.. *going to go try it now*

( this is trying out the process monitor part of the solution and then going on from there)

update: I'm guessing Process Monitor takes a long time.. Nothing has popped yet and I've already allowed the error to come up. It looks like it's still checking events...

I know you said it was the wrong thing to do, but I had that exact same problem and logs, with the whole problem of drivers and getting the error 10 ( drivers failed to load ). I tried the previous solutions and they didn't work. This did work oddly enough. I'm so glad because the zune looks so darn neat! I've had 3 ipods, 1 sony, and a random generic brand... I really wanted to try zune.

Vista might be safer now, but it's put up a lot of roadblocks in software and devices for a casual computer user. I appreciate the work on this.. and in fact I'm going to continue going through the rest of this thread if I can ( if it's over 30 pages.. I'm afraid I'll have to give up), but for now if you are severely desperate and not looking through each page for the answer.. here's one that'll give you a quick fix if you are desperate enough knowing that it's not a recommended step.

( at this point just so you know I'm at page 25 in this thread reading, so please don't anyone ream me for not reading :) I just wanted to listen to my zune while doing it hehe.)

After reading 15 pages and following may of the troubleshooting tips, the following solution worked for me.  I am an XP SP2 user with Zune 1.0 Firmware 2.0.

1. Right-click My Computer
2. Click Manage
3. Click 'Local Users and Groups'
4. Double click Groups
5. Open up the Administrators group
6. Click Add
7. Click Advance and the Find
8. Double click on the LOCAL SERVICE user to add it to the Admin group

I have XP and have recently started to have tha problem with my zune not syncing with my computer. It will sync with my dads laptop, but not the desktop. I attempted the guide above (originally submitted by snoop) And couldn't find the 'Local users and groups' folder. I have uninstalled and installed the zune software and now have been told that that won't help. It had been working, but stopped abruptly and for no reason. did the new update(2.3) have any fixes to this? I have a zunepass that I would like to use, but want to be able to put it on my zune. [insert curse here]!!!!! nothing has gon wrong with my zune until now, and I doubt it is my zune. Is there an easy, non-tech savvy explanation of solution? When connected my zune says that a new device is connected and the installation wizard pops up. I popped the start-up disk in and it could't find the drivers needed. I have a Zune 30, and uh,thats about it. anything else you need, I may be able to tell you, just ask, and please send the solutions!

i would like to add local sevices but it says " Unable to access the computer .. The error was: The filename, directory name, or volume syntax is incorrect."

what should i do?
