re: Cannot Install Zune Driver
So, I went a bit further. I removed Windows Media Player as a component. Then I tried to uninstall WMP entirely, to roll it back, but it would not roll back. So I blew out the whole bloody Windows Media Player folder. I had to unlock it first, because Windows was really not too thrilled about that idea. But I have tools.

Removed it. THEN I was allowed to remove the WMP11 Runtime stuff from my Add/Remove Programs (which I could not remove before). So I removed that. And then I removed the Zune software. Next, I re-installed WMP11, and then re-installed the Zune software. A new thing happened! Previously, when re-installing Zune, it would skip right form Checking For Updates to the actually installation. This time, it chugged through the Preparing Your Computer option as well. I got excited.

All for naught. I have the exact same problem as before. I literally just installed WMP11 onto a machine that lacked the actual files. So unless there are other files I can try to blow out and re-install (that don't reside in the ProgFiles WMP directory), I am completely tapped on ideas short of just nuking my whole machine and reinstalling XP. An option, might I add, that I look on with all of the fondness of performing a self apendectomy with a rusty pair of scissors.

re: Cannot Install Zune Driver

The UMDF (Windows User Mode Driver Framework) is the component/service that we're trying to get installed properly.

The Windows Media Format SDK Runtime includes the UMDF and is the component that needs to be installed or reinstalled.  Both WMP 11 and Zune will install the FSDK runtime.

Since we don't know the exact problem yet, I don't know the precise steps necessary to cure the problem.  I would try these steps...

Disconnect any USB media devices or mobile phones, etc.

Uninstall Zune and WMP and any Windows Media or FSDK Runtime.

Reboot the PC to make sure the uninstalls are complete.

Install Dorado, then WMP 11.  (Possibly try the reverse order)

Connect the Zune and see if it will install the driver.

Connecting another media or USB device might kicks start things depending on the driver it uses.

When you go into add/remove programs, make sure to check the "show updates" at the top so that you can see and remove any updates or runtimes for windows media.

re: Cannot Install Zune Driver
So could I, in theory, just install the UMDF package? Or is the fact that I can only get the 1.0 installer going to be a problem?

Hrmmmm. And, um. . . what's Dorado? Other than the geographical location?

re: Cannot Install Zune Driver

I'm not sure if there is a runtime package in the UMDF dev kit, but feel free to take a look and give it a try if you feel up to it.

Sorry, Dorado is the code name for the Zune software.

Side Note: Windows Media Format 11 SDK? Not the fix. >.>;

But this is interesting. I have the following service:

Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode Driver Framework
Manages user-mode driver host processes
C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k WudfServiceGroup

It's set to Stopped and Manual. If I try to start the thing, I get the following error:

Could not start the Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode Driver Framework on Local Computer.
Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

re: Cannot Install Zune Driver
Right now, the best way I can recommend to get the UMDF runtime (other than the Zune install) is to install WMP 11, but since you have a bad install right now, you may have to work a bit harder to get it into a clean uninstall state.

Goggles, I am going to take a digital crowbar to that service and see if I can't get it working. Thanks for pointing me in that direction!

re: Cannot Install Zune Driver
Aden, that is the service you need to get working.  When you uninstall Zune and WMP 11, hopefully it will also uninstall so that you can get it installed fresh.  You may want to take a look at it after uninstalling and then after installing each component to see if it's there and will start.
