The update seems to have solved the problem for me too - no restarts in an hour of playing when usually it restarts after 2-3 songs. I don't know whether to kiss microsoft or punch them for not doing it sooner.

re: restart issue

Thanks for the feedback everyone.  I am very glad that we have fixed the restart problems you are seeing.  Please don't punch.  It sometimes takes time to track down these types of issues.

Cheers!

re: restart issue

I am having a restart issue, among others, with my Black Zune 80, but this has only occured after applying the recent 2.5 Update (6th May 2008). Before the new update my Zune operated flawlessly! Now, however, it restarts almost all the time. Is there a way to re-apply the update or revert to the previous firmware version?

The restarts are not restricted to just music playback. They occur randomly, most often during music playback, listening to podcasts or viewing pictures. Additionally, I often get another new error when skipping through tracks (begin listening to a track, then use the Touch pad to skip to a new track). The error says the 'file cannot be found or is missing' and the Zune then plays the next track in the list. However, if I skip back to the 'missing' track, the Zune finds it and plays it as if it was always there! I did not have this problem before the 2.5 update.

Any help would be most appreciated.

re: restart issue

omg omg omg omg!!! Yesterday i did the 2.5 fix.. that night, i was able to listen to 50 Raidiohead songs.. with no restarts!! it lasted all night! even when i woke up this morning, it had not restarted once!

HURRAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i can finally use my Zune!!!!!!!!!! Im even using it now.. and its working so wonderfully!

I'd kiss the Zune team member Peterson that posted in this giant thread if i could!! /KISS!!

Thank you Microsoft for finally fixing this! But gosh.. you could have said something  sooner! like.. "Hey, we see the problem, and we're working on it!" Sooo many people were very frustrated and angry. Sooo many people returned their Zune, only to get another that didn't work. Sooo many people used their Zune for a paper weight. Soo many people pulled together, and posted ideas to get around this stupid problem. Soo many people were UNHAPPY!

Hopefully people will be happy now, and hopefully their Zune is working as good as mine. (and lets hope it continues to work!)

Yah, im happy its finally working. :)

re: restart issue
Thank you so much! My Zune  has  not  rebooted once and it  has been on constantly for the 3 hours while listening to music.  It is so nice to not have to worry about turning back on every time.  I had not even used it in a while because I was so frustrated, but I am glad that I waited, so worth it.Big Smile [:D]

re: restart issue
The 2.5 update has seemingly fixed the same problem.  I would go a few hours of no problems on my 80gb Zune and then BAM, it would shut off 10 times in 10 attempts.  Got very tired of that problem, especially when you are dirving down the road.  Now with the update, it has played for TWO STRAIGHT DAYS and no shutting off.  I have had to look down and make sure that it was really my Zune playing...  Hopefully it stays this way for good now.

I'm trying to find all the threads where people are talking about device reboots.  Please upgrade to the now available Zune software and firmware version 2.5.  It is availabe now on http://www.zune.net.  We have fixed some of the issues around device reboots.  I cannot guarantee that we have fixed them all, but definately some.

I'd like to get more info to the product team about the reboots people are still seeing.  If after upgrading to 2.5 you still see a reboot, give me some good descriptive details on what the device was doing leading up to the reboot.

Thanks

I found a temp solution!!! (PG.63 of this thread) Simply set the backlight to "on". Some people said it doesen't work for them but It's a good place to start looking!!

I'll be testing my Zune tomarrow durring work with the backlight off to see if it restarts!! Instead of just complaining, I'm going to ask; Why hasen't there been any response from Microsoft until now? A simple "We care that you have a problem and we're working on it" would've stoped me from telling everyone I know not to buy a Zune. For awhile I've been trying to decide wether to get a XB360 or a PS3. Being completely ignored for over 4 months was the decider there!! (not to mention the Blue Ray player on the PS3) O well!! Live and learn!!
