Then to that I would say format the Zune and use the install CD that came with your Zune which has the old software and reinstall it to your computer. If you don't use the marketplace you should be OK.

YOU CAN'T DO THAT. IT AUTOMATICALLY DOWNLOADS AND INSTALLS THE UPDATES.

I HAVE TRIED IT MANY TIMES.

It figures, sorry my mistake then.

You can, after your library is completely in your "Collection", simply stop monitoring the folders (from the Settings menu, click "Remove" on all of the monitored folders).

To address possible concerns:
- You won't have the album art (or video preview) shown to you through the Zune software. It will appear like a gray box, HOWEVER, it will still be there on your Zune.
- To add anything in the future simply open the folder that the file you want to add is in (such as C:\..\Music) through Windows Explorer, open the Zune software (to the appropriate Collection window - music for music, videos for videos, etc.), and drag-and-drop the file you mean to add into your collection. From there, simply right click on the file now in your collection and click Sync to (Your device name).
- To delete files off of your computer and keep it on your Zune, simply go back to the Windows Explorer folder and delete it from there - NOT FROM YOUR COLLECTION - and the Zune software will be none-the-wiser as it won't be "watching" the folder. The only difference is, again, when it tries to retrieve the file data (and album art, preview, whatever) it won't be able to (because the file doesn't exist anymore) and you'll just see a gray box... but it'll be safely and securely on your Zune, rest assured.
- To delete files off of your Zune, simply delete them from your "Collection."

If you're saying something like, "wouldnt monitoring the folder with the new files (and not the old) in it remove the old files? That is to say, you'll have to monitor something in the future if you ever want to add again, right? Doesn't this make syncing a one shot deal?"

My remedy makes it so that you're not monitoring any folders. Again, you're just going to add files into your Collection via drag-and-drop and not by the "Monitor this folder" option in the future. Oh, and you can sync a billion times if you want, nothing will get deleted if you follow my instructions.

IAM GOING TO TRY THAT ONE OF THESE DAYS. HOPEFULLY IT WORKS BECAUSE I HAVEN'T USED MY ZUNE SINCE THE UPGRADE.

BUT ANOTHER IDEA TO TRY--WOULDN'T IT ALSO WORK IF YOU PUT EVERYTHING YOU WANT INTO ONE FOLDER AND MONITER JUST THAT ONE ? [ I.E. MUSIC, PLAYLISTS, VIDEOS, PODCASTS, ETC ]. I MEAN, IT SHOULD WORK KAUSE THEN ALL YOUR STUFF WOULD BE IN YOUR COLLECTION AND IF YOU WANT TO ADD, JUST ADD YOUR ITEMS INTO THAT ONE FOLDER. MAKES SENSE TO ME I THINK.

re: Turn off auto sync on 2.2 firmware?

It's such a crappy feature. I use three different computers (two laptops and one desktop), my music is spread out between my real laptop (which is awaiting new parts) and my school laptop. I'm going to be greatly upset when I go to connect Zune to my home computer and it deletes all my files. That is exactly why this "feature" was, is, and always will be a mistake. FIX IT MS!

Anyway, I've been thinking of ways to possibly try to avoid this situation and it occured to me - if I switch my home computer to the computer that I never use, will Zune automatically connect as a guest to it's old home computer? I'm really not ready to copy all my files to a jump drive just to save them.

I don't want a guest account on my personal laptop.

re: Turn off auto sync on 2.2 firmware?

When you connect the Zune to the primary computer, anything that was copied onto it as a guest using a different computer will be left entirely untouched. It will NOT be deleted by the primary computer unless that same file also exists on the primary computer and is also synced by that computer.  You may also be thinking of the v1 version which reformatted the device if you "re-homed" the device.  That no longer occurs with the v2 software.  Any existing content on the device is left intact when choosing to make a different computer the primary one, and it effectively gets treated like guest-synced content at that point (again, unless the new primary computer also tries to sync the identical tracks.)

If you switch which machine is the primary machine, the old one will now see the device as a possible guest, and you'll be asked if that's how you want to use it the next time you connect it there.

It won't automatically connect as a guest, it will give you the opition screen where you can switch it back to home or connect as guest. There's also a check box for "always connect as guest on this computer".

I recently make my GF's laptop (which I only use to charge my Zune on trips) as home and have been much happier since. Even though I had to hand sync everything from my desktop, now that it's all there and I can plug in without seeing the "syncing" icon light up unless I move new stuff to the list. I highly recommend becoming a guest, as it's the only way I've found to stop autosync. That giving it no folders to monitor sounds like it might work, I never did try that. I know the "let me choose" does not work at all. Maybe for 2 minutes, then as soon as you add one song or picture, it starts syncing everything. Be a Guest, it best!

re: Turn off auto sync on 2.2 firmware?

Thanks GeminiGuy and Bigdaddyhorse! Both of you are pretty helpful. I've had my Zune since before it was "cool," so the thought of it emptying itself when I return to my personal laptop makes me sick to my stomach. All of my files are on my school laptop. The worst thing that could happen is that I'd have to copy all my new files to a jump drive, but that would take so long. My school laptop is getting tossed in the trash in June/July, so I just figured I would let it take my home account with it and I would never have to worry about the auto-syncing issues again.

If having a guest account is the best thing to do and the only thing that works, then I might do it. I'm just too anal (ok, maybe a little OCD) about organization.

STILL, MS STILL HAS NOT FIXED THIS ISSUE. I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO BE A GUEST ON MY OWN COMPUTER. THIS SUCKS HELLA. I HAD ZUNE WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT AND IT WAS PERFECT THEN..AND NOW , ITS A PIECE OF TRASH. I'VE REALLY STARTED TO HATE MY ZUNE. ITS BEEN EMPTIED AND I HAVEN'T USED IT SINCE NOVEMBER. IAM EXTRA OCD ABOUT ORGANIZATION AND HAVING TO TRANSFER MY FILES BACK AND FORTH FROM MY REGULAR ACCOUNT TO BEING A "GUEST" IS VERY ANNOYING AND I DON'T HAVE THE TIME OR PATIENCE FOR IT ! UGHHH

re: Whose bright idea was this?!!!
Why did someone think it was a good idea to make it harder for users to have control over their music?!! This whole 2.2 autosync debacle has frustrated me enough to want to switch back to an IPod! I shouldn't have to jump through hoops (sign on as a guest or figure out how to unmonitor files) just to keep music from being deleted off my zune! WTF?! The first version was much better...whoever came up with this ridiculous and completely idiotic feature should really be handed the pink slip! MS, fix this soon or what little market share you have now will most certainly disappear to Apple’s IPod!!
