Hopefully I am not repeating exactly what someone else said, but I didn't feel like reading every post.

Mine wasn't working with all the steps listed in different threads.  Here are the steps I followed and it is finally recognizing and syncing:

1.  Even if you have done a hard reset with no results, plug in your Zune to charge.  I did it on my laptop.

2.  After about 5 to 10 minutes of charging, remove the cable.

3.  Hit the play button and as soon as the Zune screen appears hit the Back-Left-Center button.

4.  Once it starts the hard reset, plug it back into the computer.

5.  Your computer should recognize the Zune and start installing.  Your Zune will then say "On your PC, open the Zune software and restore the Zune device firmware".  Follow those steps.

It seems to take quite a bit of time and lots of loading and reloading on the Zune, but it syncing!!!!  I will update if it freezes after syncing.

I am definitely not guaranteeing this will work for everyone, but it seems to be working for me and maybe it will work for some of you.

UPDATE:  It appears to be working.  It synced all my music and I let it charge a bit longer.  I played just fine.  I shut it off, plugged it again to charge, and it is charging just fine.

what if my songs are on my zune and i dont want to download everyone

re: Those of you with STILL frozen Zune.

Well so I did the back+left+ok thing correctly and my Zune says, "Clearing out content. Please wait." I don't know how long this takes but hopefully after this it works fine. I was only using about 2.5GB's of memory, about 175 songs, 12 videos (including 2 full-length movies) about 100 pics and thats about it. I hope it doesn't take too long! :)

EDIT: About how long does this formating takes? I don't want to do something stupid and unplug it or something...

How long did you let the hard reset run? The first time I did it, I think I only let it run about 45 minutes, then I disconnected it from my PC thinking it was frozen and wanted to drain the battery to give it another shot. Once it was dead I charged it up, and did the hard reset again. This time I left it plugged in, so it would not lose power. Sure enough I was watching some TV and looked over at my monitor and saw that the Zune software was running. Reloaded the firmware and now I'm syncing back up. The second hard reset took about 4 hours or so. Be patient, I thought it was bricked but it's looking good now.

Wow 4 hours? My 320GB PC took only half that time! Lol, I guess I'll watch a few movies then. The format has been going for about 20 minutes now. Thanks for the info.

About 50 minutes into formating....I'll reply every hour or so and give you updates. I really hope this works.

EDIT: I read on yahoo answers that a complete format should only take about 5 minutes....but I'm guessing thats a DATA format not firmware.

It works,,,but what I've done more than those steps is to press forget zune devices on settings,,,and actully after doin the reset I was skeptical coz I saw the logo may got frozen but I let it boot again then pluged to pc loaded firmware and other things went smooth,,,,It'a now workin as it was before,,,most important step is,,,,to clear ur mind before u start doin it....

{sorry if i am replying to the wrong person or whatever}
{This post offers no solution. Just my woes and experience with the lovely people at Zune}

I'm about to take one of the very large cinder blocks in my garage and throw it.
Besides the fact that I got a speaker dock Christmas, I'm kind of REALLY MAD.
I was okay with the New Years freeze. I could deal. What I couldn't deal with is when i recharged and turned it back on it went "ZUNE ZUNE ZUNE ZUNE NO BATTERY" So I called Zune. I attempted drained my battery. Somehow, in the midst of me pressing play/pause so many times i clearly was getting carpal tunnel, the thing started working! Then it died. So I went back to pressing pause. Then it starts working. I'm convinced its a trick on me so i let the battery die by playing SNL, checkers, and finally music on repeat. (I should have taken that time to say goodbye to it) I charged it for exactly four hours with my AC adapter. And when it was plugged in, the regular screen was on, the little battery was green, I was happy. Then I unplugged it, and ZUNE ZUNE ZUNE NO BATTERY comes back. Cradling my poor dysfuncitonal Zune in my hands I call Zune. 15 minutes later, I hang up and call again. 30 minutes of bad music later I'm told everyone is having this problem,Microsoft is trying to find the solution and to check the website for updates and maybe something about call back NEXT WEEK?!. And here I am. I'm too scared to take the thing apart. So I'll just wait, cry a little, and hope my new pet rock of a Zune turns into a real boy so I can use it again.
