Bump. Come on, MS. This is beyond stupid. Does nobody at MS use a Zune, or are you prevented from reporting its failures?

re: Zune restarts while listening to music.

1.  Debunked Wifi question:  Wifi on or off (physically going to Zune Settings and enable/disable wifi).

2.  Debunked Static issue:  In your pocket, or laying on a flat surface.

3.  Debunked bad mp3 issue:  Removing all contents via Zune software (not reformatted).  Also used ripped mp3s from my collection of CD's that play fine in my iRivers.

4.  Debunked corrupted or hidden files issue:  Totally reformatted Zune - press back button + up on squircle, then press back, center, and right button while in restart mode.  This will wipe out the Zune and force you to reload the latest firmware.

5.  Debunked non-charged battery issue:  Draining the battery until the Zune does not turn on, then recharging until the battery indicator turns green.

6.  Debunked headphone issue:  Still restarts without any headphones attached.

7.  Debunked level of volume issue:  Still restarts when volume is below 9.  I had it at 2, as well as 15.

8.  Debunked plugged in issue:  Still restarts when plugged in via AC/Adapter and car charger.

Bump . . . Hey, did anyone else go through the steps I went through before posting this?  Apparently, I heard that some of the problems were solved by doing one of the steps above.  That's why I tried them all before posting.  Anyway, just a thought.  It may help some of you, but I doubt it.  Also, since it's January 1st, I doubt anyone frome Mirosoft or Zune is in.

re: Zune restarts while listening to music.

So after thread jumping and being fed up enough with the same issue to call tech support myself, I came up with this Zune Team post about it being related to the funky battery issue: http://forums.zune.net/35864/ShowPost.aspx#41637. FYI if you call into tech support about it, do not mention that you have a previous ticket open. on 12/27 I did and proceded to have a 45min disscussion/argument about how my read-only mp3 files (different saga completely) were having their tags changed by spyware and downloading from Limewire, both of which I do not have, with a level 2 tech. I think the quality of the tech support you receive is really dependent on when you call in. Something troubling, when I did call in on 12/27 the level 1 and level 2 tech guys had never heard of this problem and did not seem in any mood to try to find a Zune30 on which could try it out and see if they could replicate it with. It seems like it is a known issue, which makes me happy, but if the people on the fromnt lines don't know about the issue, even if it affects a small subset of the population, then they're not much help are they?

Using my Zune 30, I noticed this problem only after enabling wi-fi sync. I had my Zune30 for about a month (black friday sales) and it never exhibited this tendency. When I got home and tried to hook it up to to my wireless network everything worked (with firmware version 2.2). About 30 mins later I had the device paused (while hooked up to my speaker system), looked over at it, and saw it begin to reboot. For me the problem only happens when I have my player paused, never while listening to music *knocks on wood.* I've since updated to firmware version 2.3 and the issue still manifests from time to time, even without wireless turned on (or an associated wireless sync network) and after reflashing (back to 1.0) and resyncing everything. The hard part is that I can never get a set procedure do upon which to force the device to restart. I simply does so when it pleases. After reading the afforementioned thread some more I came across this Zune Team post: http://forums.zune.net/2/35864/ShowPost.aspx#64912. Daklu (Zune Team), says the problem is hard to capture and replicate, there are people working on it and recommends (if possible) we try to exchange it for a device that works.

Edit: I just talked with my mother and after initiating a manual restart on my Zune30 to see if she ever runs into the issue, she said this "Yeah, that screen [the reeboot screen] will show up on my Zune whenever I start it." After telling her that it isn't supposed to, she thought further on it and then said that sometimes the device just comes back to life (like its supposed to). Its alarming when there are users who think this behavior is normal.

to be honest, none of this should even be happening.

It is once again the result of premature launch.

Go ahead giggle.

re: Zune restarts while listening to music.
If not a sticky, at least an official acknowledgement that a small portion of Zunes are experiencing this issue. Since I believe that 2 months is outside of Toy 'R Us' return policy window, I'm SOL in trying to take it back to the brick and mortar (although I have yet to try). In trying to obtain an RMA from tech support, I leery in trying to do so, without some official word (i.e. a support site posting comfirming the issue) backing me up. The last time I called 4 days ago about this issue they did not know about the issue at all. This makes it rather difficult to proced with any type of support, muchless an RMA if one first has to quantify and then qualify an issue that is inonsistent by nature.

Wow! Thorough research!  thanks for that.

I've tried all of the above and still no luck.  I have a Zune30 - over a year old.....one of the first ones off the market.  Worked fabulously until the required software and firmware update.  Faithfully paid my Zune Pass since day 1!! Don't mean to sound negative or troll-ish BUT I miss my old zune w/ the perfectly streamlined music!!!!!! Sad [:(]

Come on Zune staff - we're patiently waiting! Wink [;)]

re: Zune restarts while listening to music.
Yes, I agree. I would like some acknowledgment of this problem. All of my co-workers and friends are experiencing this issue and my boss returned three of his Zune's (one for him and two for his daughters and got an iPod instead).

I am also experiencing this problem, but I have not exchanged my Zune YET as I just reformatted my Zune. All of my music are either purchased through MarketPlace or ripped from my CD's, so my media files should not be the cause of the problem. My previous MP3 players (iPod and Creative Zen) never had this issue. So it must be a firmware or hardware issue. I have the wireless off on my Zune 80 and I have just done a fresh install of Windows XP SP2 on my laptop. Hopefully we will see a firmware update this month that addresses this issue.
