re: setup tells you that you are missing a package?
I get the same exact message!  My wife just got me the 30G and there has never been any Zune software on the system.  I am running Vista Home Premium - All Windows updates have been applied - I tried fro mthe supplied disk, the downloaded bundle, what a joke!  Does anyone know what this means?

re: setup tells you that you are missing a package?

I have another suggestion that worked for me, however, you need to be familiar with the Windows Registry.  I have followed these steps successfully:

1.  Uninstall the Zune software from Add/Remove Programs.  (For those of you having trouble uninstalling the software start with step 2 below, however, you must come back to step 1 and start the process over to ensure that all files and entries are gone).

2.  Search the Windows Registry for "Zune" and delete ALL entries found.  (There are a couple that you will not be able to remove and this is okay).

3.  Search the hard drive for "Zune" and delete ALL files/folders found.

4.  Restart the computer.

5.  Run the Zune setup software.  (Does not matter if you try the old installer or the new installer).

If you need further assistance feel free to contact me.

"Installation Failed"

Setup must stop because the required package ' %1!s!' failed to install.

error code 0x8004231f

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkIdD=101253

Is the message I get.

OS = Vista Home Premium

Firewall is on

Never had Zune software - just got Zune 30 yesterday. Cannot install anything - Windows cannot even install the Zune driver.  I have tried using the CD that came with the Zune, I have tried the bundled package (166MB one) all with the same end result.  What a piece of crap.

So far I have found nothing on the boards to help me out - WTF!

I disconnected from my network and tried all the installs (CD that came with Zune 30 & the 166MB bundle) the CD demands an internet connection and the bundle errors out with the same message!

re: setup tells you that you are missing a package?
I am recieving the same issue. Basically the install is looking for Zune.msi but after an extensive and exhaustive search of my hard drive I have come up empty. There is a file named zune-x86.msi in the C:\...\x86\packages folder when you extract everything but I tried pointing to that folder and renaming the file to no avail. As far as I know I do not have System Restore on so the previous idea won't help me. I am going to try the registry thing here in a minute and see how well that works. I hope there is a better solution out there for those who are not as tech savy as some of us (no offense intended of course).

I also have the 0xe0000302

Nothing is working I have been a ZUNE pass subscriber for about 6 months.

I can not access the marketplace or my music due to this update.

Now on hold with the outsourced retarded fucking tech department. I am suprised they know what a computer is.

First my XBOX 360 craps out on me (twice) and now The 270 dollar music player and subscription to software does not work, and I can not even talk to someone who can speak English. This blows with lose sauce all over it.

re: setup tells you that you are missing a package?
I have since COMPLETLY un-installed old software, and re-installed package.

All of my music via zunepass and CD was still there afterwards.

The only negative so far is that I purchased the Halo 3 Edition Zune, and support told me that everything would be there still. Music is but all of pre-loaded content is not. IE exclusive PICS VIDEO ECT.

So anyone else having these problems I suggest that you completly update your microsoft software updates, then uninstall zune software, then DL the Zune "package"

Thanks for being a troubleshooting community vice what microsoft provides : - /

Good luck all

re: setup tells you that you are missing a package?

Don't know if this is just exclusive to Vista, or if it works with XP as well, but disabling System Restore has worked for me as well, using the 166mb package.  Turning off System Restore let the installer skip the updates and the "prearing your computer" and skipped right to the installation.

HOWEVER, now that it's installed successfully, it simply won't start.  So now, I'm worse off than I was before.

tl;dr

Keep searching

re: setup tells you that you are missing a package?
It must be a Vista thing, XP is still giving me errors when trying to install.  Firewall, System Restore off, and running the full package installer have all failed so far.
