Guess what.  Features are exactly that and should have stayed in the new version of the software.  You don't take features out of something.  Should TV manufacturers stop making their sets able to be controlled via remote control?  Should washing machine manufacturers start putting only one cycle on the new models?  Should car manufacturers take away air conditioning and heating in the new models?  Because you know, these are all features.

Another thing, guess why it's fast.  It's fast because so many features aren't there!

It seems that 99% of what you have a problem with are features that cannot be kept and made usable with ease with the new Social experience. They ahd to choose between these and the Social. However, it seems they will be bringing smart playlists back soon. They have a really good discussion topic going about whatwe want in the playlist features, so I think they know that it is something they need to bring back quickly.

I couldn't said it better myself. Adding insult to injury no prior warning was given that the player would stop supporting a majority of features, instead it was promoted as "adding support for podcasts" etc. I was looking forward to this new shiny interface and pod cast capability. I guess I didn't understand it would mean that 1) I can no longer fit the same number of tracs on the zune (as it can't down convert music) unless I start dublicating my files and 2) I can't sync on a genre but have to drag/drop each individual album over.

So while I get one new useful feature (podcast) I loose manymore. It's like if vista would add support for some cool apple application but at the sametime downgrade me to a windows xp machine (albeit with a polished interface).

Not what I was expecting

You do realize that there would be no 'Social' without the software and hardware?

re: From A Loyal Supporter From Day One - When Can We Expect A Statement?

I just noticed over at zuneinsider.com that Cesar has been more than accomodating at making sure everyone can purchase a new Zune in stores based on his comments. So it seems the team is more concerned with selling players than fixing the ones that they have broken by the new software they deployed. Just calling it how I see it. Still silence from the team on addressing the problem and a timeline for a fix.

re: From A Loyal Supporter From Day One - When Can We Expect A Statement?
I could deal with any number of bugs if the Zune team would just issue a statement saying that they are aware of the bugs and are hard at work fixing them. As I've stated many times on many different threads, I CANNOT INSTALL THE DAMN SOFTWARE!! That's a pretty big frigging deal, especially since I already uninstalled the old software thinking that might help. Since there seems to be no easy way to rollback to the previous version (and I doubt I could access the Marketplace with the old version anyway, which really sucks because ALL of my music is from Zune Pass) I'm royally screwed until I get the new software installed. And it wouldn't even bother me that much if somebody from the Zune Team would answer my concerns and at least tell me that they're working on the problem. So let me put this as subtly as I can:

ZUNE TEAM!!! WE ARE PISSED!!! ANSWER OUR CONCERNS!!! NOW!!!!!!!!!!!

Your statement about being in the "technology industry" apparently does not cover software development. Apparently you did not read up on how the new software was made or why. Or even what the old one was. You were not using zune software 1.0. You were using Windows media player with a different UI. I love WMP but it was too freaking much sometimes. Here's some news for you... the new Zune desktop software is WMP also... but with the underlying details and settings hidden from the user.  It is significantly dumbed down, but it is still WMP.

No it isn't.  A member of the Zune team stated on this forum that the new software was built from the ground up.  That is why it is missing features that were in the old software - they didn't get to them yet.

This software release has been a nightmare to many of your loyal supporters who have been there from day one, including me. And I for one feel like a sucker...

I would hope that after 4 Zunes and a years worth of cheerleading from myself and others, letting us know when we can expect this nightmare to end the software to be fixed, and that people are actually reading and understanding the problems here isn't too much to ask.

I know I am about to abandon ship. I am frustrated and dissapointed. I know for sure with all thats out there it won't be hard to convert back.

Soon To Be Lost Supporter,

I applaud a brilliantly and well-written post, Lil'.  Like you, I have been one of the Few who supported Zune since the beginning. I've since purchased 6 additional Zune's: 1 for DH, 2 for DD's and 2 for friends. Had already planned to buy two 80GB Zune's and pass the two 30 GB ones down to two neices.

Not now. Not until the horrid changes have been fixed. It's not a matter of my lack of adaptability. It's a matter of buying into what I like and appreciate.  I'd stop going to a restaurant that no longer reflected my tastes. I'd stop buying clothes from a store that no longer had quality merchandise. I'd stop buying premium cups of coffee from a chain that no longer served what I liked.

The grievances are many and accurate.  I feel like the original Crash Test Dummy in regards to the new upgrades.

I don't appeciate that feeling, one bit.

How does not being able to sort by genre, edit metadata, etc... prevent this mythical "Social" from happening?

Design based on some sort of paternalistic ideology is not a good way to design a product.

Essentially you seem to be saying that in order to build up a social network of some sort, you need to dumb down the software's functionality to the point that it is virtually unusable?

You are free to believe them.  I have no desire to convince you of otherwise.  The official "fix" for cross-linked metadata tags mentions files that are unique to WMP (and WMCE)... it is not built up from the ground up.  Elements of the UI are new, but WMP is alive and well in the 2.x software.

I have the software and firmware no problems dloading it or installing or anything but I'm pissed at the crap I've lost and all my music tags getting royally screwed.
I agree with the bullet points.

GIVE US ANSWERS. All I want is a timeline. Surely its not hard to just add back in those features you took out!
