Zune restarts while listening to music.

I posted something on January 22nd about this issue (I'm apparently a newb, so I don't know how to point to that post). My band was using the Zune for percussion/keyboard tracks and it kept stopping in the middle of songs during a performance. I have yet to see a single reply from Microsoft regarding this issue. I also spent about an hour and a half with two different tech support people. Still not resolved. I have seen Zune support people responding to other posts on this forum, but apparently the issue of a music device not being able to play music isn't important enough for them to get involved (does this make me a troll? I'm not sure).

just to confirm with all the other posts here, head phone jack doesn't make a diffrence, wireless is always off, I have only ripped CD and Marketplace music and the problem never happened before the firmware update.

I've got the same problem.  Here's what I have tried and noticed.

Zune still restarts with these conditions.

1.  Debunked Wifi question:  Wifi on or off (physically going to Zune Settings and enable/disable wifi).

2.  Debunked Static issue:  In your pocket, or laying on a flat surface.

3.  Debunked bad mp3 issue:  Removing all contents via Zune software (not reformatted).  Also used ripped mp3s from my collection of CD's that play fine in my iRivers.

4.  Debunked corrupted or hidden files issue:  Totally reformatted Zune - press back button + up on squircle, then press back, center, and right button while in restart mode.  This will wipe out the Zune and force you to reload the latest firmware.

5.  Debunked non-charged battery issue:  Draining the battery until the Zune does not turn on, then recharging until the battery indicator turns green.

6.  Debunked headphone issue:  Still restarts without any headphones attached.

7.  Debunked level of volume issue:  Still restarts when volume is below 9.  I had it at 2, as well as 15.

8.  Debunked plugged in issue:  Still restarts when plugged in via AC/Adapter and car charger.

The only thing left to debunk is faulty hardware or faulty firmware.  I am exchanging my Zune for a new one (Yeay for 2 year warrantees from Best Buy).  If it still happens, then it is not the hardware i.e. hard drive or electronincs, but a firmware issue.  From my extensive research in other forums, I found that this happened before in the first gen Zunes around firmware release 1.3 or before.

And yes, I have called Zune Support India and even they suggested that I exchange the thing.  I'll let you guys know as soon as I have my new Zune.

I just found this on Zune-Online.com...

"this is a common problem among the zune 80. mine reboots randomly throughout use. doesnt do it when watching video, just seems to happen when the backlight is off. i called microsoft and spoke to a few different people. i was on the phone for more than an hour. the guys told me that they didnt really know what the problem was. they said its either a firmware problem, which i think it is seeing as there are people that upgraded to 2.2 and are having the same problem, or that the battery surges and causes the unit to reboot in order to protect itself. if you go on microsoft.com under help there is a post that says it is due to a "fatal event" that occurs. hard resetting doesnt do anything to help.

if you also look on other forums such as zunerama, zune.net, cliczune, zuneboards.com and whatever else is out there there are people having this same problem. no one knows how to fix it.

so i guess we will all have to wait and see when everyone else gets their zune80. im sure its just a firmware bug and the only way for microsoft to do anything about it is to call them. the more people that call the better. they told me that this problem has to be at least 5% of their daily calls for them to see it as a real problem. so start calling"

I just want to let you know that i just bought a Zune 80gb 4 days ago and have been having the same issue. I have been on with tech support 5 times now. The are aware that this is an issue. I spoke with a superior. She said my system had defective hardware and that they would ship me a refurbished one. I told her that i would try to return it to where i bought it cause it had only been a few days.  During the time on the phone with the tech i had restarted my Zune. Also deleted everything and restored and still had the same problem. So as of right now nothing will make it stop. So I exchanged my previous ZUne yesterday and got a new one. The guy in the electronics department said that if happens again to let them know and they will call microsoft and have them do a recall on the items.

So I tried to sync the new one with out updating it. Cant do that . it will sync but the Zune wont let you use it unless its been updated.. So i updated it synced my music. It seems to be working but i  cant get my ablum art to show up.. its like one thing after another.

So heres my suggestion., Try to take your Zune backand exchange it for a new one.  . tell them that you called the company and they said it was defective. and let them know that others are having this issue. Hopefully we can get microsofts attetion that way.
