I've seen two solutions to this, one works for some, the other for others.  I don't think either one is universal...my Zune 80 doesn't freeze so I cannot test them.
1)  Change to the default Zune background
2) "Install Games"
  1. Connect the Zune
  2. Go to Settings in the software
  3. Click Device
  4. Click Device Update on the left section
  5. Click the Install Games button

I changed my background a few times a couple of days ago, and my 30 hasn't frozen since. After I read this I tried to replicate the Bug and I couldn't get it to freeze, so sounds like that works. Can anyone else confirm?

Zune 30

I did not use the Install Game way but I did restore the default background (which btw was not there any longer, just a black screen unlike the background that came out of the box)

I tried to get my Zune to lock up and it wouldn't. Now, I'm not saying it was a fix but as of this time clicking over and over trying, it did not lock up.

Thank you for these suggestions and I hope that this is a good sign.

spoke too soon.....My Zune is still locking up. So for me, restoring the default background didn't work.

With some extensive testing, I've found that changing back to the Default background was a TOTAL fix on the freezing problem for me. The installing games method might work for some people as well.....

Mine froze, so I plugged it into my computer and now it won't even turn on. Can't restart at all.
30GB Zune, had it for 2 years, no problems until now.

re: 80GB freezes (occasionally) on play.

I am getting freezing, song skipping, etc, since the 3.0 update.  Songs are not corrupt, they play fine on computer.  Tried reinstalling firmware & resyncing, same problem.

Zune sucks now, fix it MS!  If you wait 6mos for a fix you will lose a lot of customers.

If you read the thread, I posted two potential fixes.  Good luck.

re: 80GB freezes (occasionally) on play or just has a 20 second delay
after hit play, the counter starts, but there is no music. After 20 seconds, the music starts and the counter stops for 20 seconds, then resumes where it left off. I can listen to everything this way without it freezing, but the 20 second delay is definitely annoying. Has anybody else experienced this?

Something like this has happened to me a few times I just pressed the left on the clickpad to restart the song and it was fine.

re: 80GB freezes (occasionally) on play.

I have an 80GB and am having some of the same problems mentioned in this thread: freezing when I try to play a different song when there is 15 seconds or less of the current song left and then having to reboot, time counter doesn't progress on some songs. On songs in which the timer does progress, it sometimes begins late, stops, or shows the wrong time. In addition: occassionally after the end of a song, the "now playing" screen does not switch to the screen for the next song (but I can hear the next song), sometimes pressing the right side of the zune pad makes the player advance to the next song, but the next song does not begin playing unless I press "play", and "pause" does not work most of the time. There's just so many things wrong with my player that I probably haven't even mentioned everything. I've tried the two fixes mentioned (returning the background back to the default and re-installing the games); neither worked.

I just got my player this August, and like with most of you here, none of these problems existed until immediately after I installed the 3.0 software. I've never dropped it or had any problems prior. I'm debating what to do next, but I hope Microsoft offers some type of fix soon. I just switched over to Microsoft after I dropped my Creative Vision M in water a few months ago (had it for 2 years with no problems), and I LOVED my Zune prior to this update. It's extremely frustrating.

re: 80GB freezes (occasionally) on play.
If Microsoft had a better way of dealing with support and getting devices back to customers in a more timely fashion I would have no problem at all with them.  I think the Zune is a great device but unfortunately the return process is a bit time consuming and you are left without your device longer than you should have to be in my opinion.  Them offering a cross shipping of a working device to speed things up would be a great way to go.  My device would only freeze at times while in my speaker dock never just playing it that I can remember even after the update.  With so many people having the same problem I hope they get this adressed in a hot fix soon.
