Frank, since you've had devices previously installed, could you try these steps which will remove any previous Zune device instances...

 

1) Disconnect the Zune

2) Open a command window (as administrator if vista)

3) type set DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1

4) type start devmgmt.msc

5) When device manager opens, check View->Show hidden devices on the menu

6) Find any Zune devices (they may be gray) and uninstall them

7) Connect the Zune device and see if the driver will install

The software upgrade went fine for me.  As for the hardware... when I plug either of the Zunes in, I get a message that says "Installing device driver software", which is followed shortly thereafter by:

"Device driver software was not successfully installed
Please consult with your device manufacturer for assistance getting this device installed.
Zune                                         Failed"

The Zunes show up in the device manager with yellow exclamation points.  When I check further, it says Code 10 error - can not start device.

I tried this before when I saw you posted it for someone else.  Steps 1-6 worked fine, but once I connect the Zune I get the error message again.

1 - Turn *ON* the Windows OS Firewall

2 - Download the Full Zune Install package

3 - Turn off your virus scanner

4 - Make sure your Zune is *NOT* plugged in to the PC

5 - Use the Full Package installer

6 - If it is successful,  plug in your Zune and let it auto-detect

7 - If it fails,  search your C: for ZuneInstall.log, and search for the word "Phantom".  If it's found, post it here and I will see if I can give you the instructions on how to remove phantom devices.  This was the problem I first had.

I am having the same problem as frank. I am running vista and trying to hook up a Zune 30 with no firmware cause another post said a full zune format might solve my problem. I've tired all suggestions in this post so far and nothing has resolved the issue i have having. The setupapi.dev log shows the same pretty much as mine have (!!! dvi: Device not started: Device has problem: 0x0a: CM_PROB_FAILED_START.). I get the error everything I plug the zune into the USB port reguardless of which port its in.

I completely agree. I am not ignorant when it comes to computer stuff but I am definately not a pro and having some sort of professional assistance as an option would be fantastic!!What's the point of spending $200 on a piece of equipment if you can't get the freakn thing to work.  Mine is saying the same thing and I can't figure out how to fix it. I would really LOVE to be able to use the Zune.

By the way i'm running Windows XP any help is much appreciated. I tried the information previously posted but it didn't work
