re: Music Collection Issues

I tried this trick and have now found that my metadata is butchered on numerous tracks, album art is completely scrambled and i'm basically HOSED.  Something in the software has corrupted the metadata tags on my actual files.  God knows how long this would take me to fix manually (having to troll through 23GB to check everything?!?!?!)

Welcome to the social....SOCIAL DISTORTION.

Master, just so you know, retagginig in WMP doesn't seem to affect the files themselves.  I think we have the same issue and I've had to start goinig through by hand in the properties menu of each file to fix it.

Someone please, please, please suggest a retagging program to fix this.

re: Music Collection Issues

Tried the fix proposed by the devs, and although it helped a little, it didn't solve the problem. WMP still has the correct info (as far as I know), but zune 2.0 is totally shot. My music is literally all over the place.

I seriously do appreciate the zune devs trying to work to fix the problem, and I think it's cool that they are on the forum addressing people directly. I can most certainly see effort in this area, but I'm still bummed that the update has absolutely destroyed my zune player's music. And, since the zune 2.0 software is the only way to get music on the player (and I can't delete anything off from the player itself), it is just an unenjoyable experience to use it. As it is now, I don't even want to use it for music. By the way, how do I edit track information besides just the track title?

I have mine to only add additioional info  and it looks to be good in that fashion.  Maybe you can try copying the media player data file from wmp and renaming it to the file name. at least maybe that could save you some time. It it wigs out more just delte the file and let it sync again.

re: Music Collection Issues

Deleting the files and letting Zune reindex worked as far as I can tell (I haven't really studied the album art yet), but I've got another issue, and I can't tell if it's related or not. While checking files, I found a few songs with the wrong artists or grouped under "Unknown" artists. This was probably the way I had it arranged before, so it's not Zune's fault. However, I went through and changed the artists and song titles that were wrong by clicking on "List" and then right-clicking and editing the titles and artists I wanted to change.

Easy enough, but when I went back to the "Browse" screen, which displays artists, albums, and songs in different panes, none of the changes carried over.

So my question is, does this have anything to do with the files you had us rename? I know just enough to understand the basics of what you had me do, but not enough to answer my question. Have I created two sets of data here, so that updating one won't affect the other? Or is there something simpler I've missed?

Thanks for the previous advice. It helped a lot. I know you guys are furiously busy with this.

I've tried the "fix" above twice now. Metadata appears to be correct for songs. But nearly all the album art is still scrambled.

I'm having the same issue.  Actually called MS Zune support (waste of time) and they had no idea how to remedy the problem.  All the album artwork is messed up.  Songs listed under the wrong album, etc.

re: Music Collection Issues

As users we shouldn't have to download retagging programs or anything else. We should get a new version of the software and that should fix everything. I keep reading this garbage about metadata editing and deleting stuff in your computer...enough.

Hearing from everyone (and my library is messed up as well), it's really obvious that Microsoft never did any testing with the new software at all. How could they not notice this issue? Are you telling me that NOT ONE employee went home and tried this? Ridiculous.

Hopefully they are working on an update now. I know new software will always have bugs with it, but it's hard to imagine that MS actually tested this stuff and was blind enough not to see this huge issue in their own libraries.

re: Music Collection Issues
I rechecked update album info in settings, closed, renamed the db files, and rescanned one more time. This seemed to fix some of the issues. However, there is a still problem here where albums are getting mixed in together. I've Four Tet in Fiona Apple's albums, Alpha in Anna Nalick, Beck in Belly, Beck in Bill Wharton, Bruce Springstien in Cake (??), Chris Thile in Cocteau Twins, etc. I'm going to let it sit for a while and see what happens, but at this point things are still pretty hosed. The meta data is being updated it appears, but not to the right data.

Sorry, this did work. Had to wait a few minutes for the correct album art to appear. But the Zune test team (or the management that ignored them) deserves a spanking. Big miss. Customers should not have to read forums to get software working on a 2.0 release. Or any other for that matter.
