"Delete the player's content using the Zune software (go to Settings, Device, Sync Options, Erase All Content), then re-sync it from your collection."

Give me *** BREAK - Microsoft can't even get THIS right... how in the HELL are you supposed to do this if the thing is STILL stuck???!?!

This is so ponderous it makes my head spin.

re: Those of you with STILL frozen Zune.
none of these options worked for my Zune.  It is literally something to poop on.

And you know what Tommy Boy says about 30G Zunes.  "How do you know the 30G Zune fairy isn't a crazy glue sniffer?  'Just recharge your battery' says the fairy, well I'm not buying it.  You invite him into your home and the next thing you know there's change missing off your dresser and your daughter's knocked up.  I've seen it a hundred times."

My 30GB was still frozen this afternoon after letting it charge via USB. I've tried the hard reset - which stuck at "clearing contents". Battery drained, now when I charge it, I just get the Zune logo - no progress bar or anything. I'm going to try the hard reset again, but I'm thinking this is a brick..

No it isn't, mine did EXACTLY the same thing. The only way I was able to fix it was by opening it.....see my post below...

So you did a hard reset, then disconnected the battery? That gives me some hope, but of course my precision toolkit is at the job. I have no qualms taking it apart, did it yesterday when this debacle started.. only for it to freeze up again on me while I was on the train ride home. Hopefully it'll come back to life.. thanks for the info.

Yes. What I was doing, rather than taking it apart at first, was barely charging it, just enough for it to be responsive. Then when it would start to boot up, I held the back, left, middle buttons. The zune froze on step 4. I had to let it die. I tried this multiple times until the zune just starting freezing on the zune screen, before the bar even loaded. I finally got frustrated and took it apart. Disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it made the zune respond as soon as I plugged it back into the pc. It reinstalled the drivers and asked that I reinstall the firmware. The rest is history. Don't give up!

Just wanted to add my 2 cents. I have a brown Zune 30gb that I bought 2 years ago and never experienced any problems until 2 days ago. Anyways, I waited like the front page said and my zune didn't fix itself. I took it apart yesterday (I'm an experienced technician) and did the battery disconnect and then today I tried almost everything possible to get it to work.

The only thing that actually worked was to take it apart and disconnect the battery again. The second I did that, poof, my zune was alive again. Now I'm adding the 16 gigs of stuff I had back onto it. If you feel confident in your abilities taking the zune apart is as simple as popping off a tiny plastic piece, removing two small screws and gently pulling the back from the front. It's that easy. In order to put it back together, repeat the previous steps in reverse order.

It's disheartening to have a device we've come to rely on break down for no apparent reason. All I can say is to a few people that griped about the warranty and it not being Microsoft's fault. B.S.

I did nothing to make my Zune stop working. I paid for the device and I expect it to work. Whether or not we have warranties, Microsoft should fix this device regardless because THEY are the ones who screwed up the code, not us. If they refuse to fix anyone's Zune that is bricked it seems like an easy lawsuit, considering it made National News. Microsoft seems to have a track record recently of mucking things up (3ROD anyone?). Anyways, I'm sure the less mature forum addicts are going to flame this post but keep in mind, your argument is pointless. The entire world knows that the Zune screwed up yesterday, we just need a way to fix it quickly and efficiently. -PEACE-

Thank you very much Jusdafide, it worked.  What I did was drain the battery, started it back up, and did the back+left center combination.  It froze on me so I removed the battery and it worked again.  All I have to do is re sync all of my media.

Your gonna have to let the battery die then before the loading screen comes back on press back+left+ok. It delets the firmware and everything on it but once you reinstall the firmware it works again.

Negative Ghost rider.  I tried that and it just sits there.  then it jumps to the loading screen and freezes, back to step 1.

re: Those of you with STILL frozen Zune.
I also got the 30GB Zune "Happy New Year" lockup.  I tried letting the battery drain all the way down (since the lcd wouldn't shut off).  After plugging back in I got the depleted battery icon on the LCD, and got the charging depleted battery icon.  I let it charge overnight.  This morning when it started to bootup, it once again locked up at the 100% status Zune bootup screen.  I tried all the stupid button combos to reset the thing, which have worked in the past, but to no avail.  I decided to manally remove the power source as a last attempt.  I foolishly tried prying the thing apart without looking at any directions.  Then I went to youtube and looked up how to actually open the device.  After removing the screw covers on the usb charge port and removing the screws, I was easily able to remove the top protective casing/lcd screen.  You just need to be careful with the headphone jack and the locking mechanism at the top.  After removing the top, I had instant access to the battery and battery ribbon cable connected to the motherboard.  You have to be very careful when removing the ribbon cable from the motherboard, as it uses a tiny two-part tension bracket to attach the ribbon cable contacts to the motherboard contacts.  For me, this all came apart and I thought for sure this thing was fubar.  With a little tinkering, I managed to get the ribbon cable/tension connector and motherboard terminals connected in a fashion that allowed the device to boot.  This time, it was able to boot fully into the system and everything seems to be as it was before.  I was able to browse through my music.  I was able to start a game of Hexic (it even resumed the previous game I was playing before the device went south for 2008!)  Now, any modifications of the hardware may be against the rules.  Then again, I just don't care.  I payed for this piece of hardware and I'll do whatever it takes to make sure that it lasts as long as possible.  If you decide to take yours apart, there is a good chance you'll never get it back working again, plus if you had any kind of warranty left, you won't after this (if it's detected that you took matters into your own hands.)  But, if you're like me, I had no warranty left, and really had nothing to lose.  I've got a bit of tech savy and a bit more curiosity and figured the hdd might be good even if the motherboard/firware was damaged/corrupted.  So far, I only wished I had looked up the part on youtube first on how to disassemble the device before embarking on this journey.  Good luck and Happy New Year!

re: Those of you with STILL frozen Zune.
I just wanted to say thanks and confirm this method. I had the problem because I tried to hard reset my zune yesterday. I did what SOulR3b said, and it is working. It did freeze on the screen after the Zune loading screen, but I let it die and plugged it in. And everything is working. Thanks.

You know.

Yeah, I followed the same steps, even the one's that MS left regarding a potential fix for the clock bug. Nothing worked. Again some false hope given to us by those of MS. I'm not about to chuck the thing out a window, but I am loosing my patience a bit. I still support the Zune, just at the moment, my 30 gig Brick.

I have a video about it on youtube:

"What the heck happened?!?" "Umm...I broke your iPod." "How did you manage to do that?" "I dropped my Zune 30 on it."

Thanks Soul Rebel...this is the only way mine would come back to life Big Smile [:D]

I unplugged the battery...plugged it back in...hooked it to my PC...hit the button combo and cleared the contents of the device. It took a few minutes but its back

I tried over and over, but just went with the full wipe of media content and firmware. Got it clear successfully and am currently reloading my media.
