I heard so far from zune users who has a 30 gig that they still have the EQ after firmware upgrade.  However, the ones who has an 80 gig does not have the EQ.  To me, it sucks.  I'm wondering how often do you get updates from zune for adding features, etc.  Btw, I have a 20gig IRIVER H-10.  It is almost simular to the zune compairing to the features but I love the H-10 custom EQ.  The H-10 is near it's death so that's why I'm looking for another player.  The zune 80 gig looks hot but is it upgradable so it can have the EQ?

Zune 30 still has the EQ.  It makes a small difference, but...c'mon...we are talking portable audio here.  I am curious...if you are 'a stickler for sound quality' like you say, then why in the world are you messing around with portable media players?  How do you encode your content?  My Zune sounds fine to me, but I also know that I'm not getting the best sound possible.  MP3 and WMA is only so good anyway.  I am just curious, I don't mean any disrespect to you.

Well, that's a little bit misleading. There are many EQ implementations done via software so it is possible, however; I never much doubt that the Zune hardware has enough horse power to power a software EQ.

So it's not impossible to implement via a firmware update, but I don't think the hardware could handle it so it won't happen.

Besides, I've compared my Zune 30 with my favorite EQ settings to my Zune 80 and, I've got to say, the Zune 80 sounds much better.

Then the petition isn't TOTALLY useless. Maybe, if possible, Microsoft could  put an EQ for the 2nd generation Zune, but should definitely for the 3rd generation (if it ever happens). After all, some consumers (like me) might not buy the 2nd generation Zune because of their lack of EQ. Also, the EQ makes all music sound better, no matter how great your earphone is. Trust me, I have a great pair of earphone, and it sounds better with the EQ on. And it'd be really cool too, if there's customizable settings, cause audiophiles love those kinda things.

re: PETITION FOR ZUNE EQUALIZER
I'm very surprised! I have a Zune 30, so this doesn't matter to me, but for the future, I think this is a simple feature that should be available. I don't use the EQ much, but it does make a difference when I put it on. I hope Microsoft sees this and fixes it!

re: PETITION FOR ZUNE EQUALIZER
The Zune has great sound quality, even without an EQ, it has the best sound quality out of any MP3 player out there, so i don't know what cypher1001 is talking about. I won't get a second gen Zune because this is something that sound be added in the third gen, which i'll be checking on then. Even if it doesn't have an EQ then, i'm sticking with Zune because it's sound quality is still perfect without the EQ.

re: PETITION FOR ZUNE EQUALIZER

I seriously cannnot believe this thread has become 4 pages when I was very blunt on the first page in saying IT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN... another person even explained why and you guys are still "signing this petition" which if anything is only telling Microsoft to think about including the chip in the next generation of the product.  It will have absolutely no effect on an EQ for the 2nd generation Zunes.

That said, if it is possible to implement a software EQ, that's still a very, very, very optimistic view on the situation.

re: PETITION FOR ZUNE EQUALIZER

You are exactly 100% correct.  Why take the music and screw it up with an equalizer?

However, I'm not so sure that paying $100 for a set of ear bud head phones is gonna make all that much difference over my $20 pair.

^ Yes it will, better quality headphones = better bass and just better sound, reducing the need for an EQ even more.

It would be nice, but it isn't necessary.

With that said AGAIN, the point of this petition isn't pointless, just slightly difficult to be in accordance to. We're the consumers, and it's up to Microsoft to satisfy our wants. Can we double sign this?

Have you seen how much EQ the ipod has? It's got enough to match the number of bibles sold!
