re: Turn off auto sync on 2.2 firmware?
Are Microsoft going to start forcing us to upgrade our PCs and purchase new hard drives so we can store all our music digitally? If I have a hard copy of an album I don't want to have it taking up space on my HD as well. Thanks to this new software it's either do that or nothing! I get this 'drag and drop' but come on guys, what a pain in the ***? I realise we can't have it every way we want but as far as I was concerned this was a fundamental feature of the large capacity players - it's okay for the 4Gb & 8Gb, but are we expected to keep 80Gb of content on our PCs and on our Zune? Surely the people who buy the 80Gb version need this auto sync turned off just as much as I do? Come on Microsoft, put this 'feature' back (it's as much of a 'feature' as 'animated interactive menus' on  DVDs).

re: Turn off auto sync on 2.2 firmware?
I did some testing with some music files and made an interesting discovery. My Music\Zune, is always a monitored folder, regardless of how I have the software configured. This includes any subfolders in the Zune folder. I don't have any videos on my device right now, but I'm assuming it will create a My Videos\Zune folder.

Anyway, here's what you can try.

1) Turn off all monitored folders. I left a folder for podcasts, since by their very nature, they're best autosynced, but that's it.
2) Sync using drag and drop. Go to My Device/Music (or videos) and drop the files in there to get them to your Zune.
3) Leave the entries in your "My collection" section. This looks like it's just a database, so it shouldn't take up too much hard drive space. If you delete an entry from here, it will delete it from your Zune.
4) You can delete the files from your PC hard drive if you want, as long as it's not in a My Music\Zune subfolder.

Using this method, I can manually copy files to my Zune, then move them to wherever I want on my hard drive without deleting them on the Zune. Let me know if this works for you.

re: Turn off auto sync on 2.2 firmware?
It seems no matter what I do I have to keep the 2nd video (or converted files) on my damn hard drive. I've tried everything with no success. Unless of course I never sync my device until I want to delete said files. Such little things piss me off!

Also what you could do is make a secondary windows account and set it as Guest and on your main windows account, set the software not to start automaticly when you plug the device in.

This way you can charge on your main account and use the secondary account to sync files without everything wiping.

This is what alot of people have been doing, it's a hassle but it's really the only way.

re: Turn off auto sync on 2.2 firmware?
I just want to add that I wholeheartedly agree with the people asking to be able to turn off the auto-sync.  Just the option is all I think that most of us want.  You can make it so that it's not really easy to get to, just like many of the advanced user options in the MS computer OS's.  I'm like the other fellow who spent all the time loading up his CD collection, and then deleted them off the hard drive only to be surprised that they disappeared from the Zune as well.  My husband and I have been buying CD's since 1985, and we have acquired quite a few, but I don't need to keep them all on my hard drive and my zune.  The actual discs are enough back-up for me!

Losing a bunch of CD's that I'd loaded and having to re-load them was not the only problem this 'feature' caused.  I had the opposite problem as well.  Since my husband has a zune as well, he hooked my Zune to his computer and loaded some video he had shot of one of our kittens.  When we watched it, we saw that it stuttered (he needed to use more compression) so he compressed it more and loaded it on his Zune.  Seeing that it worked, he loaded the new file on mine as well.  He gave me back my Zune and he deleted the previous video from his zune and his library.  I looked at my Zune, and both files were still on it.  The larger one would not show up on my computer so that I could delete it and since he had already deleted it from his library, he couldn't deleted it from his either.  After reading boards and messing with stuff for a quite a while, he finally remade a file with less compression added to his library, hooked up my zune and deleted the file and then deleted it from his library.  But should we really have to go through all this?

Please have a little faith in your customer base, and allow us to make some decisions on our own.

Thank you for listening.

re: Turn off auto sync on 2.2 firmware?

I've been vouching for you guys for awhile, but even now I'm starting to wear thin. I don't care much for who your target audience is, because I'm one of the many who isn't within it. Why on Earth would you set the system up this way? 'Become a part of the audience who doesn't delete anything or screw you'? It's totally the opposite of your 'user friendly' scheme. It's competely backwards! I own a laptop and I don't need all the space filled up with movie files I already have  unconverted or on dvds just because I don't want them to be deleted from my zune Lightning [li]

The only good thing about this is that it only extends to music added post update. I did back up my entire device (optimistic much, huh?), but just thinking of all the people who would've seen adundance of their music, pictures, movies, gone...

Is the entire zune team filled with people who've never owned a portable music device in their life? It really seems so these days...

Ugh, thanks for trying Andy.  I think for now I'm just going to go back to 1.4 because I like to have full control over the device and it just doesn't work with my style of organization.

Is there a way to go back to 1.4?  I just got a Zune for the first time a few days ago, and the software has been BEYOND frustrating.  From what I'm reading, the old software was a lot better.  I would love to just use that.

I've tried doing just what you are suggesting. The old software will not work with the new marketplace. It's OK if you never want to buy music.

re: Turn off auto sync on 2.2 firmware?
I know for a fact that "Home" and "Guest" have completly different sync lists, meaning when you sync at "home" the "guest" items will not be modified in any way/shape/form.

With that in mind, make a second windows user account and set it as the "Guest" home of the device, throw every single media file you do not want to keep on your hard drive but want to keep on the device in it's Music/Movie/Picture folders and sync. When you're done, switch back to your main windows user account, navigate through windows explorer (XP: C:\Documents and Settings\2nduser\My Documents\, Vista: c:\users\2nduser\ where 2nduser is the name of the second windows username) and remove all the items you do not plan to keep on the hard drive.

Now when you sync with the windows account set as "Home" of the device, NOTHING you just sync'd on the 2nd windows user account will be removed and will continue to remain on the device unless you try syncing with "Guest" again.

re: Turn off auto sync on 2.2 firmware?
for people that don't want to go the route of creating another windows account...:  instead of deleting an album from the collection, you can just delete the contents of the said folder and it'll stay on your zune. given it will still look like it's in your collection but when attempting to play it will result in an error window. sucks but what other option do we have besides creating another windows user account?

MS please fix this!

I was begging a guy on the phone the other day to let me go back. "I'm sorry but we cannot and do not offer downgrades on our software". I said that I don't consider it a downgrade at all, since the old software was great and worked perfectly everytime, and the new software hasn't done anything right after multiple tries. "I'm sorry you feel that way, but it is better" was the reply I got. Lucky it was phone, that is deserving of a slap. I could care less about the marketplace, never used it and probably never will.
