Here's the one I get, word for word:

Installation Failed

Setup must stop because the required package '%1!s!' failed to install.

Error code: 0x81000109

Now, I've tried both the standard download and the full package and get the same error, regardless.

Yup...having the same problem.  The "fix" didn't work. :(

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one having this problem. Seriously, did they test this at all before they released it? Anyway, here's the error I'm getting:

Installation Failed

Setup must stop because the required package 'Zune' failed to install.

Custom Action 19:37:58.092: Operation 'RemoveDriver' has finished with result 0x80004005.

DIFXAPP: Rollback failed with error 0x2

Error code: 0x80004005

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=101253

And that's it. Why are these error messages always in, like, a foreign language? Well, anyway, I tried downloading the 166 MB "ZunePackage" and got the exact same error. Plus I tried going to the Windows Update site and I have all the most current updates. So I've tried all of the solutions that have already been offered, and no dice. I'm pretty annoyed, but this sort of thing happens to me with technology all the time, and it always seems to work out in the end. It just takes much more time than I want to spend on it.

I don't think that anyone read my previous post.  You have to use the old installer (which is I believe version 1.3 and it is no longer available from the website).  When you run the old installer it automatically checks for updates and downloads and successfully installs the new 2.2 version.  I have this file and if you need it leave me your e-mail address and I'll zip it and sent it to you.  It is only 5.31MB in size and I just don't have an online location to host it.

Just tested your 1.3 method and it didn't work.  The 1.3 installer starts, looks for updates, finds updates, downloads updates, then starts the 2.1 installer and the installation fails the same way.

Sorry if I gave you guys false hope, but I tried a bunch of stuff and the 1.3 installer is the only thing that worked with no problems at all.

I am having the same problem as a lot of you. That above is the Zune 1.3 installer, I downloaded it last night just in case I had to go back to 1.3.

Yeah I've tried every solution given so far and none of them work. This sucks. Just once I'd like to get some piece of new technology and have it work perfectly. I don't think that has ever happened to me. Why do we keep buying this crap anyway?

This is fucking bullshit. I've tried everything and anything to get this to work and NOTHING WORKS. Not the setup package, not the 1.3 installer, NOTHING. I CAN'T EVEN FUCKING UNINSTALL MY CURRENT ZUNE SOFTWARE!! WTF?!?!

Windows Firewall seems to be the 'missing package'

Turning ON the Windows Firewall fixed this for me.
