So, it's not that it's all that hard...but it's this: first, your Zune tag is your unique identifier in the community. If you could change it at will, you could build a reputation up and still behave like a troll, because no one would know it was you.
Understood, but MS could easily develop an icon that would designate the person recently changed their tag. And as far as trolling, the board moderators would have full access to the users history. If someone is trolling, changing their name won't circumvent any infractions/ban, which is the more critical component to this community. People like that create additional accounts to cause trouble anyway.

So changing a Zune tag needs to be a serious thing - not something that should be done at random will.
eBay allows people to change their name once per 30 days, I think you could do more damage on eBay than on Zune forums to someone. Reasonably serious? Yes but it's really not that serious. At least offer a one-time change and perhaps limit it to once per 12 months, or charge a reasonable fee like 400 points but still have a limit in place to avoid abuse.

Xbox Live allows changes for 800 points (about $10). That is enough of a deterrent to prevent people from doing it for malicious reasons. We would like to implement a similar feature - but when we prioritize all the features users request and we want to build, that one hasn't reached the top of the list yet.
Malicious and ill-intentioned individuals will create multiple accounts rather than trying to change their name to evade a ban or action. I agree the 800 pts is going to make people think twice about it.

Just out of curiosity, what 2.5 feature would you have given up to get Zunetag changes?
Gapless play or the badges.
