Cannot Install Zune Driver

What firmware version (settings->about->zune) is currently on your device?

Do you or did you have Zune V1 installed on the PC?

I am having this same problem and I am seeing more and more of these threads pop up all over the internet. The lack of developer/staff input here is disconcerting, especially since I have seen them help out in other threads here. Microsoft - you need to fix this, at least show interest in fixing it, because right now you are losing customers every day this goes unnoticed.

Windows XP SP2 I have the ( ! )> icon over my Zune (which is listed as a Zune under Portable Devices in my Device Manager. . . egads that's a tease). This was a fresh install of the hardware and software - I have never owned a Zune before.Every time I plug the Zune in, I get two of the following error in my Event Viewer > System:

The Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode Driver Framework Platform Driver service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

This also happens if I try to manually direct it to the Zune.inf file.

Try these steps which will remove any previous Zune device instances...

 

1) Disconnect the Zune

2) Open a command window (as administrator if vista)

3) type set DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1

4) type start devmgmt.msc

5) When device manager opens, check View->Show hidden devices on the menu

6) Find any Zune devices (they may be gray) and uninstall them

7) Connect the Zune device and see if the driver will install

Aden, it sounds like you may have the same problem as Daoine.  Could you get the details from c:\windows\setupapi.log for the connecting of the device?  Do you or did you have Zune V1 installed?  What is the current firmware version?

It's a 'new' Zune, which is to say I'd never had one before, but it's not a V2. So fresh out of the box with "Version 1.0 (193) Hardware 2.0"  I got it on the 13th (clearance sale, I believe), so it never had the chance to try and work with the V1 software. 

I've by this time had V1 installed on my PC, as one of the times I reinstalled it, it actually installed off the disk instead of downloading an update from the start, but I've had exactly the same end result no matter what.  Since then I've also completely cleaned the program off my computer and reinstalled using the zunepackage that MS sends you to.

My apologies, I did not see you tagged as one, I thought you were just a helpful Zune user. I don't mean to be so hostile, but this is VERY frustrating.

Okay, just tried them, the process worked as expected through step 6.  Step 7, it refused to install the driver. 

This is a completely fresh install, as I have never owned a Zune before the 80GB I bought on Tuesday. The unit came with the 2.0 firmware, but is currently running the 2.2 firmware. The same problem has persisted with both firmwares. I attempted the full Device Manager trick listed above, and removed several translucent Zunes and an absolutely stunning number of translucent Zune Bus Enumerators, but the problem persists. Here's my setupapi.log, everything that comes up from a clean slate when I plug in my Zune to ANY of the USB ports:
