re: Vista - Zune Failed

After reading 15 pages and following may of the troubleshooting tips, the following solution worked for me.  I am an XP SP2 user with Zune 1.0 Firmware 2.0.

1. Right-click My Computer
2. Click Manage
3. Click 'Local Users and Groups'
4. Double click Groups
5. Open up the Administrators group
6. Click Add
7. Click Advance and the Find
8. Double click on the LOCAL SERVICE user to add it to the Admin group

I have XP and have recently started to have tha problem with my zune not syncing with my computer. It will sync with my dads laptop, but not the desktop. I attempted the guide above (originally submitted by snoop) And couldn't find the 'Local users and groups' folder. I have uninstalled and installed the zune software and now have been told that that won't help. It had been working, but stopped abruptly and for no reason. did the new update(2.3) have any fixes to this? I have a zunepass that I would like to use, but want to be able to put it on my zune. [insert curse here]!!!!! nothing has gon wrong with my zune until now, and I doubt it is my zune. Is there an easy, non-tech savvy explanation of solution? When connected my zune says that a new device is connected and the installation wizard pops up. I popped the start-up disk in and it could't find the drivers needed. I have a Zune 30, and uh,thats about it. anything else you need, I may be able to tell you, just ask, and please send the solutions!

OK Not sure if this will work for you, but it did for me.

I was noticing that I was having netwroking issues and it was giving me a Server Execution error on it, I looked for a solution and it ALSO fixd my Zune Code 10 Problem

Here it is:

Go to Accessories, right click on Command Screen, run as administrator and enter:

net localgroup "Administrators" "NT Authority\Local Service" /add

Then restart your computer, and plug in the Zune

Hope it works for you all

THIS WORKS! Vista users, this pretty much IS the solution to the Code 10/driver failure problem. After rolling back my WMP updates, running this line in command propmt, and reinstalling the Zune software, my Zune worked perfectly!!

Thanks!

re: Vista - Zune Failed

Goggles:

I'm a Vista Business user experiencing the Code 10 error.  I've done the "big gun" fix and added LOCAL SYSTEM to my Administrator group, and it still hasn't solved the problem!  I went back and examined my Process Monitor log after connecting the device, as you began to describe on the bottom of page 24, and there are NO results of "Access Denied."  But the Code 10 error persists in the Device Manager.

The weird thing is, after a fresh install of the software the Zune seems to sync up.  The software says there's a required firmware update, from 1.0 (193) to 2.3 (1145), but when I hit "install," about 30% or so into the download the driver cuts out and the Code 10 error pops back into existence.  From thenceforth the software never again recognizes the Zune until I un/reinstall.

So, out of curiosity I ran the Process Monitor under the parameters/filters you laid out during this process (that is, a fresh install > connect Zune > Zune syncs > start update > Code 10 error reappears).  That log doesn't have any "Access Denied" results either, but there might be something in there you can use.  Just tell me what to look for.

In retrospect, the firmware updating process might not have anything to do with it... it might simply be a short time limit.  When I left the device sitting on the screen requesting me to update, but didn't click the button, left, and came back to it, the Code 10 error had reappeared without me even starting the update process.  So my Zune can sync for 60 seconds or so per install...

Help!

re: Vista - Zune Failed

Update:

I've confirmed that the exact same thing happens whether or not "LOCAL SYSTEM" is included in the Administrator group.  I just hadn't noticed it the first couple times I tried to install.

I've also confirmed that it is indeed some sort of time limit and not directly related to whether or not I start the update process.  Just plugging it in and letting it sit there syncs it up normally and then after about 30 seconds the Code 10 error pops up.

Please help!

bump!

Let's keep this informative thread on the front page!

(I'm sure this has nothing to do with selfishly wanting somebody to solve my problem!)

re: Vista - Zune Failed

Tophstar,

That is "Local Service" not "LOCAL SYSTEM". Try that. Only thing that worked for me on my Vista system.

I just wrote a couple of .bat files to run the command prior to connecting and then a delete .bat file once the Zune is connected. I hate open doors.

re: Vista - Zune Failed

Er, right - "LOCAL SERVICE" is what I meant.

Again, it doesn't fix anything.  The Zune syncs for about 30 seconds after a fresh install of the software, and then the Code 10 error pops up inevitably, whether or not Local Service is added to the Admin group.

re: Vista - Zune Failed

Update:

I used my girlfriend's (crappy, old) computer to install and sync my Zune.  It worked perfectly, albeit slowly.  I got all my music (on an external HDD thank god) synced up, my firmware updated, and everything.

I decided on a lark to attempt again to sync it to my computer, in hopes that the new firmware would help somehow.  No dice.  Exact same problem, except now it prompts me to link the Zune to my computer (since I linked it to my girlfriend's) instead of the update screen, since the firmware's already been updated.  But same 30 or so seconds and then boom, Code 10 error and the Zune software acts like I unplugged the device.
