re: Zune Software Update Coming Today - 2.3 FINALLY!

Cesarisok, I am glad you are excited by the new Zune Software update, but so far I have not had any luck getting my Zune to Sync correctly..

Here are several of my issues. It would be nice if the $300 my sister spend to buy me this product someday is not a total waste.

I am running Zune 2.3 on two computers.

The first is a new Toshiba Satellite running Vista Home Premium, and these are the problems I am experiencing

  • I can not get my Zune to connect to the computer. It recognizes the device but there is an error (Code 10) when starting it. I checked the Microsoft help website and did everything they suggested http://support.microsoft.com/kb/944909?sd=zune step by step. But to no evail. So I am not even able to begin to use the software with this computer.
My second system is a home built desktop that is running XP Professional SP2, here are the problems I am experiencing with it.

  • My zune starts up fine, but when I go to sync from my collection the syncing always stops at around 1 - 10%
  • When I try to sync manually the software says syncing complete, but the device gets caught up in syncing mode, and in the end no music is actually synced.
  • At times when I sync music files are removed that I do not want to remove, and other files are skipped.
With this machine I have tried connecting to different USB slots, both front and back. I have erased all the music off the zune and tried syncing again. I have rebooted the Zune multiple times. I have changed the name of my device. I have had the software forget the device and then reconnected it several times. But all of this to no avail. The only thing I have not tried is throwing the device across the room, it is getting tempting though.

It is really frustrating to buy a high end device and then not be able to use it fully. On my last sync it only synced 41 out of over 4000 songs in the collection. Oh, all my songs are on my hard drive and are in mp3 format. I use Monkey Media to manage my collection on my computer. Now that is a GREAT piece of software.

It is my suggestion that Zune rethinks it's strategy here and makes it's device more versitile and user friendly. If Zune makes the drivers so that they can interface with other media programs that would be fantastic. The way it is now it is a proprietary nightmare, with hardly any support. I am thoughouly disappointed with my Zune now, and will not recommend that anyone buys one. Also, I was told by the employee at Target where my sister bought this for me that the Zune interfaced with any media player.. Lies, Lies, Lies Yeah!!

Well Cesar, waiting for your reply and some sollutions.. Thanks for any help you can provide

re: Zune Software Update Coming Today - 2.3 FINALLY!
Down loaded 2.3 this morning and received an error message, went to reboot imediateley and it wont reboot....any suggestions. I had NO issues with the previous versions and no prior issues with the computer. I keep it fairly clean of  un-necessary programs so as not to affect the performance and was only using it for my music. Zune is the only music program on it other tham media player.......please help.

re: Zune Software Update Coming Today - 2.3 FINALLY!
  • Content with bad metadata now shows properly so it can be removed from device
I can confirm that this issue has NOT been resolved.  I deleted a particular album that had been giving me trouble with this and there are still 3 tracks left on the device.  They do not show up through the Zune Software, but they are still on my device Angry [:@]

Do I have any other choice than to reformat my device and start over?

re: Zune Software Update Coming Today - 2.3 FINALLY!

Well, after the update on my Vista machine, every time I connect my Zune 30 I get an error...

Read Error

The Zune software can't access important data on your Zune.  Try disconnecting and reconnecting it.  If the problem persists, contact customer support.

Has anyone else seen this, or have a solution?  Multible restarts of machine and Zune have no affect. Same with uninstalling and reinstalling software and drivers.

re: Zune Software Update Coming Today - 2.3 FINALLY!

To the zune progamers:

I just tried to download the update, it worked fine until It said it needed a file off the zune drivers disk. That disk is burried somewhere in my black-hole of a closet. I gave up looking after 10 minutes. So i will not be using the patch. Next update please send all the files we need with the patch! or have an option to a file that contains all the needed bits.

Thx Kevin

you could try the zAlternator which allows you to sync with WMP11, MediaMonkey, Winamp, etc. - when it's connected to any of those players I mentioned you can view all the files on the device then delete them. From what I've seen it's more accurate than the Zune software when viewing files to be deleted.

here's a thread about zAlternator: http://www.zunescene.mobi/forums/index.php?topic=32752.0

and here's the download for it: http://tinyurl.com/22lqxx

re: Zune Software Update Coming Today - 2.3 FINALLY!
I downloaded and tried the new update today after having been on vacation for the last week.  My hopes have now been crushed...  Not only does it still appear to be having the same metadata issues that I had before, but despite the "Auto update album art and media" checkbox being UNCHECKED, it has seen fit to run through my collection and destroy an unknown number of my ID3 tags.  By destroy I mean update with the wrong information (verified with Mp3tag).  I've no idea how many it messed up on the first pass before I went to manually adding folders.  Sometimes from albums it doesn't know about yet (adding a few folders at a time)...  I assume I must have missed a database file somewhere (I killed the sdf file and used the collection reset tool)?  Also, some albums with long names have SOME of their songs get truncated album titles.

It was bad enough before when it was just a read problem, but seriously....  The possibility of it killing what I spent all that time renovating is terrifying and I "only" have 1500 songs.  How hard can it truly be to read a tag and write to a database?  I realize I can set files to be read only, but this is a rediculous step to have to take.

I've rebuilt my collection an untold number of times now, uninstalled and reinstalled repeatedly, messed with various suggested settings in Mp3tag...

The only bright side I've seen is that it seems to actually keep the metadata changes I make from within the Zune software.

I know I've seen a few other posts with similar problems.  Surely Microsoft has seen this happen in testing.  Surely they know the kind of aggravation it causes consumers.  I've never, ever liked Apple, but at least their software can perform basic operations like reading ID3 tags.

i think MS are losing lots of fans with this software and update. the device rocks (for the most part) but there sure are some pissed off people due to hours of tagging, rating, building, etc.
