I'm gonna jump into the fray and announce that I like the heart system. Don't get me wrong, i definitely see the advantages in having a 5-point ratings system. it does allow you more freedom and nuance when categorizing your music and creating playlists, etc. When i first started using zune as my music player over WMP, i thought i would really miss it (in fact, that's why i only used the zune software to sync with my device for a long time) but after switching over to the hearts, i have to say that it is much more streamlined, and i lost virtually NO convenience. because when you really boil it down, the five ratings were just different ways of saying you liked something or didn't. I mean, yeah, i could say some songs were fives (masterpieces) while others were threes (good enough for a playlist) but at the end of the day, I would include every song of a certain type i liked in a playlist. I mean, if i don't like it, i'm not going to PUT it in a playlist, right? i can't see myself saying ,"ok, i only feel like listening to the songs i REALLY like right now."
Something else I haven't noticed anyone else bring up yet: it is MUCH easier to change a songs rating from the device itself with 3 possibilities instead of 6. Especially when you have t cycle through the possibilities in one direction. this might not seem like a big deal, but i listen to my zune mostly in the car. It's so easy to "discover" good songs i haven't listened to yet in my library when i know i can just click the middle button twice for a good rating (bring up the menue, then rate it "like") or once more for a bad rating. This would be alot more difficult with a more complex ratings system. yeah, i could just hit it six times under the other system, but If i'm not looking at the screen and i cick one too many times, i just said i hated that song, and my zune will kick it out of all my auto playlists instead of preserving it like i hoped. Same for runners, or anything accept sitting, really.
I think the ability to choose your ratings system couldn't hurt, however. especially the ability to change the picture. Hearts just don't do it for me. neither does the pink that's plastered over everything zune related. hey, maybe we could even make our OWN icons for rating things? talk about customization, huh?
