Re: Those of you with STILL frozen Zune.

UPDATE

So I tried charging thru the usb with the lock button on......after 15 minutes, the power bar started up and froze (again).   (I thought the unit would not power on with the lock button on).........so now  I will let it die......again, then watch and wait for it to power up and try to get those little buttons before it boots              I hope this thing has 9 lives cuz I don't want to take it apart

Your gonna have to let the battery die then before the loading screen comes back on press back+left+ok. It delets the firmware and everything on it but once you reinstall the firmware it works again.

I can verify this definatly WORKS i was like the rest the "fix itself" theory was crap for me.

update: went to sync music came up with repeated errors all the same tho, diconnected and did restart ,  reconnected and i am able to sync but now the battery only goes up about a quarter charge and most of the songs come up missing while some play fine ( lol seems to like smashing pumkins) but it is working..... kinda has a limp tho I'm sure they'll release update as the different complaint come

update again: the reserved space is growing not sure if this is a new thing or not, i had like 4-6gigs reserved space before , it's at 2 gigs right now , i'm probably 35% into my full resync

update again#2:  i think i figured out the battery problem i just unpluged the battery from the inside and it's not show more than half charged but not all the way yet( i also think it's truely not charged all the way. as for the music problem i actually had this before and i just deleted from zune and and added back then they work all is almost back to normal and then some because of all the extra $h*t i had on there before it ran a bit slow it's running a bit faster now lol go figure zune dies and come back a new one in a sense

i think i probly had one of the worst fixable cases as nothing melted inside. i believe if you do as posted  by soulr3be1 you'll be happy like i am

and won't buy a first gen from MS again

Best of luck to you all

Yea. It should only take a minute or two. If it gets stuck then you may have to do the hard reset where you take the back off and unplug the battery for a few seconds.. Its not rocket science honestly. And if you are scared to take that route then just let it die and try it again. Just be careful upon opening it. It helps if you have a set of the little tiny screwdrivers. But once it says connect to pc you open up your zune software and thats when mine installed the software and it started working just fine.  If its not recognizing the zune try going into your settings and reinstalling the software. I think its ridiculous that this has happened and alot of people waited and STILL have a non working 30. But I hope everyone gets their's working. If not then I'd be calling and giving Microsoft a piece of your mind. Cause I have a feeling if alot of peoples aren't working STILL that there is gonna be some type of lawsuit or something.

Thanks to all for this tip. Mine hung up on the "clearing device" screen, but when I dis/reconnected the battery, it came up with the "connect to PC" screen. I have re-loaded the zune with software and it now appears to be synching. I'll post again if it suddenly converts to a doorstop again, but so far, so good.

I suspect that those of us getting the mysterious blank screen were the ones who attempted the hard reset yesterday, but don't know that for sure. Did any of you get the black screen without having attempted a hard reset?

Mine never made it back.  The battery drained ok, but it tried to start one time and is now good and dead.  I talked to support and they agreed - its a brick.

It takes a good while for it to charge back up from being dead. Mine took a good 10 mins before it started to load up again. But you really have to watch it cause if you don't catch it before it starts to load the button combo to get it to delete the firmware won't work. Is the dead battery icon coming up or is it just straight up a black screen and nothing is working at all?

I'm not giving up yet.............I'm going to wait for a new MS staff response.   Until then, I'm going to keep it on the charger, go out, drink some champagne and celebrate New Years Day,  like a normal person would.  But I sure did like my brick.......we were like buddys after 14000 plays

re: Re: re: Re: Those of you with STILL frozen Zune.

the hard reset seems to be working for me as well, updating firmware as we speak *fingers crossed it all goes well*... I take that back... IT WORKED, my screen is now showing "connected" what a glorious sight lol. of course now I have to put the case back together.

A note, I also did a hard reset last night and made the mistake of connecting it to my pc, and this morning it would not start up. I am willing to say that any who is still suffering from a frozen zune also did a hard reset. I say this because I have two 30 gb zunes one is still under warrenty so I was weary of opening it incase we had to send them in, this morning it booted up fine. The other well, you know the story "idle hands" and all that jazz.
