If The Can't Fix It They Should Replace It With A Sexy 120GB Zune.

I imagine our compensation will be an apology and firmware 3.1.1 somewhere in the future.

Unless, of course, this problem isn't resolved by simply waiting until tomorrow.  In that case our compensation could be huge since Microsoft could face a class-action lawsuit over this.

I just got off the line with tech support. They indicated that this is looking like a recall/warranty exemption issue. They don't know for sure yet, but the information that they are getting is that its going to take a trip to a service center. So yeah, don't look for your Zunes to function for a while.

I don't know if free Zune Pass is the right compensation.  So far, you've been inconvenienced for about 8 hours.  I don't consider it too much of a problem at the moment.  It's actually kind of amusing to me and I'm anxiously awaiting what Microsoft has in store for a solution.  I'm a little bummed that I couldn't listen to my Zune this morning but I've gotten over it for now.  I know Microsoft will have a fix or at least some form of a solution relatively soon so try to relax a little and wait to see what happens.  To their credit, MS has always come through when problems like this come up.  I don't expect anything different this time around.  Do you think they want to piss off some of their most loyal customers?

re: StLRams11...
My 80 gb is working fine and the 30s that can be located are all locked up.  I bought a Zune for my wife (paid $212) and my 3 kids when the price dropped below $100 (bought a few extra and eBayed them to pay for the kids' Zunes).  Technically three are still in warranty however if I can't locate the receipt it won't matter any way.

You are kinda missing the point. It isnt the 8 hours of loss of use. It is the fact that every time we get a new firmware "upgrade", we now have to hold our breath and wonder if our device we paid for is going to continue to work. An incident like this, combined with other incidents around the hardware division of Microsoft, exposes them for not being good with hardware. People are right to be concerned. When you buy a product, you expect it to work. Nobody would have bought a Zune if they thought they would all expire, en masse, unpredictably.

re: should microsoft compensate zune 30 owners with free zune pass?
What REALLY sucks for me is I just redeemed a Zune Pass card, before I noticed the locking issue.  If I had noticed it before, I would have held off on the redemption until I was sure the 30 was going to work.

I have a feeling that 30 owners will be getting new Zunes.  I do NOT want to have to ship it off and wait 1-2 weeks to get a replacement.  Just do a standard recall, where you take it back to a retailer and get money back.  But I don't want a 4 or and 8, and I'm sure MS doesn't want to give me an 80 or 120.

With the amount of people experiencing this same problem, I doubt it would be that quick of a turnaround.  You're probably looking at 6-8 weeks if that's the way it goes.

I don't disagree with your sentiment but I've had my Zune for over 2 and half years without a single glitch have have been extremely satisfied with the quality of the Zune so far.  Since this problem occurred en masse, we can say that this is so far away from the ordinary for any electronics manufacturer that it's mind numbing.  However, you're absolutely right that it never should have happened.  This is a massive problem that warrants an immediate response.  I think we should just wait and see what happens before we all start screaming Class Action Lawsuit to the nearest shyster with a law degree.

I would be glad to wait 6-8 weeks to get an upgrade to an 80 or 120 model.  But since my 80 is working fine and my 4 others in the family are all 30s, I might not feel quite as inconvenienced as everyone else.  Keep in mind, we are only speculating at this point.

I'm really amazed by the (overall) reasonableness and rationality of the forum responses to this!  It's certainly a very frustrating situation - especially the ' I was going to use my Zune for my New Year's Eve music' aspect - but it's great to see most people's rational reaction; especially since I'm a Microsoft employee (although not in the Zune group) and am feeling a twinge or two this morning.  I do have friends in the group, though, and I'm sure this won't be their most enjoyable NY'sE.
