I find that many sync problems can be fixed by simply rebooting the device, reformatting it, or reinitializing it. Here is a list of the device commands for both V1 and V2 devices. Try these actions first if you are having a problem with syncing to your Zune device.

Reboot: Press and hold the Back button (<-) + Up on the directional pad

Sleep Mode: Back + Down

To perform the following, reboot your device, and then when the screen goes black, hold the corresponding buttons until the process begins.  (“OK” refers to pressing the center of the D-Pad/Z-Pad.)

Clear Content (Format) – Clears all media content from the device, but leaves the firmware intact.
V1 Devices (Zune 30): Press and hold Back + Right + OK
                V2 Devices (Zune 4/8 and 80): Press and hold Back + Play/Pause

Initialize Disk – Removes the content and the firmware.  Device will be inoperable until connected to a PC so new firmware can be installed.
V1 Devices (Zune 30): Press and hold Back + Left + OK
                V2 Devices (Zune 4/8 and 80): Press and hold Back + OK + Play/Pause

I've read in the forums that holding play/pause is sleep mode, and holding back and down is really 'off'- thus accomplishes a reboot when you restart.
Can you clarify?

My Zune 30 has been in the dock for a few months without using it at all and haven't had my laptop connected to it either in that time. I noticed the Zune logo was appearing on the screen though and thought I'd try to use it, so I updated the software on my laptop and still can't use it, the logo still appears and resetting does nothing. Can anyone help!!! Thank you.

ok i haveva question, what is the difference between sleep & turning the Zune off? They seem the same EXCEPT after putting my Zune to sleep, you can't resume whatever you were playing. So whats the point in that? Can some1 clarify? Thank you!

I'm just being social. =]

You've basically got it.  Sleep mode keeps some low level settings and processes alive, so that the device can resume quickly.  Off is off, and at a restart the device starts everything back up like a reboot.  In sleep mode, you are using a trickle of battery, too.

Should clearing content take a really long time if I have quite a bit of music on my zune? It's been quite a while and I'm doubting that it's doing anything and might be frozen, but I don't want to reset it in case it actually does take a long time...

Well I understand all that, but here is my problem.

I recently had a virus on my computer which caused me to do backup and just start over.
I reinstalled the zune software, but my device wont connect. It will start charging but it will not connect.
I've tried rebooting and sleep mode already and I don't want to erase whats on my zune because it has files that i didn't back up.
I've already tried connecting to a different USB port as well. Nothing seems to be working.

Any ideas?

I tried the first two commands and nothing changed.

My problem:
-My Zune doesn't respond during sync.
-Songs only play for about 30 seconds before there is silence.
-After trying to fast forward the song and such, an error message comes up saying the song is missing or cannot be played.
-The zune sometimes freezes when selecting a song or option.
-This started when suddenly the Zune had to erase all content.

I am afraid that if do the initialize disk step, it won't respond when I connect it to a PC so the new firmware can be installed.

PLEASE HELP!!!
Its been like this for about 3 months.
