I've been thinking about categories of quizzes - like this:

About Me: I can create my own "About Jessica" music quiz. My friends can take it to see how well they know me, and other people can take it to get to know me. This is totally personal and never becomes part of any other quiz.

About Electronica (or another genre): This would be an editorially-driven electronica quiz - the more I know about electronica, the better I do! I can try to be the electronica expert on the Zune Social.

About the '80s (or another year): Editorially-driven questions about the 80s (or whatever other year).

Music Generalist: Questions from all the quizzes except for the "About Me" quiz - this would be a HUGE quiz, like hundreds or thousands of questions, and very few people would get a majority right and those people would get badges or something like in Xbox Live.

I also think that while our editorial team can create the quizzes, it would be better if they did some and we allowed users to do some. So I could create my own "Electronica" quiz, and then if other people voted on my questions, maybe my questions could be included in the overall quiz?

What do you think of that?

The XBox Live "achievements" idea might have some legs. More high level than that, maybe stick something on our Zune Card about how we're doing in quizzes whether its achievements or whatever.

re: And the winner is...music trivia!

I think the direction is right. But I do have few questions. Suppose I create a few quizzes. So I have 3 which falls under “About Me” and 2 which falls under genre like “Indi Rock”. Will I be able to manage these quizzes? It would be great to be able to see these quizzes under their proper category on some sort of “My Quiz” page which will contain all quizzes made by me.

You should give tags for the quizzes just like there are tags in Picture organizers like Live Photo Gallery. So I can maybe create a quiz which revolves around Civil Right Movement and tag it so. Or maybe it’s about music from SiFi movies and I can tag the quiz that. This would help other people find user generated quiz.

I think along with the quiz you should, if possible, give the ability to place the 30 second sound clip. I think it would be great way to discover some music on which the quiz is based.

How about trivia based upon the 30 sec sound clip. That should be interesting. So the question will can be formulated o the basis of 30 sec sound clip.

More Later...

re: And the winner is...music trivia!
  • I think there should be an option where users can submit questions (with their answers)
  • Sure, editors should approve them if possible
  • I think decade based questions will be more fun, but a genre question could be mixed in as well
  • I definitely agree for the different types of questions with video clips, part of a song, and just simple questions
  • a combination of them
  • Yes yes and yes to all of those.  a mixture of genres, general questions, and a higher level for getting involved
  • There should be at least 10 questions in a quiz. You can submit a quiz each week so users know to participate in them
  • Yes that would be a splendid idea!

re: And the winner is...music trivia!
  1. yeah if users can submit questions there would be more variety (hopefully) and there would be less repeat questions
  2. yes definitely some dont care about the code of conduct
  3. both genre and decade possibly even a blending of the two?
  4. absolutely have to have the option to listen to the song clip actually all three would be cool
  5. a combination of all
  6. idk don't really understand the questions. i'd have to see it to
  7. maybe have some preset options like pick a genre then pick how many questions (5, 10,15,etc)
  8. yeah creating our own quizzes would rock independent research rocks!

Hmmm...

I like that! But there should be something to win at the end of the quiz or question or whatever you end up calling it. If your not an xbox player and just a Zune user, maybe an upgrade in your community ranking, or even better micro soft points which can be used all over the place.

Just a thought.

Dear jetherealz,

For the music trivia, it should have a main menu, so when you exit out of the game you don't have to restart, like apple did in their nano. on the menu, there should be genres of music for various quizzes, or all for all genres. the background should really be multicolored, as if it were a computer screen of the future. lastly, the transition effects should be awestrucking, so the game can addict as many people as possibe.

                              thanks for your help,

                                       seBEASTian

P.S. you should include some three dimentional graphics so the game gives a modern appearance to the zunegamer, not an appearance that came from the 80's. also, there shouldn't be any corny music in the background. alternative or metal songs give it an adult-like appearance, not a childish one.

thanks again~!

re: And the winner is...music trivia!
While we can have quizzes, can we do something like Flixter does with movies and have a neverending quiz, too? That's something that would greatly spark my interest. And if we could be able to listen to our music while playing the trivia, that'd be great.

Aha, at the "Type of Question" list, make so that the user clicks his pad on which question types he wants added into a quiz. That way, if someone wants the music clip part, then they could stick it in there. If they would rather not have that, then add what they do want, etc.

Also, if you do decide to add the "Listen to your music while answering questions" then it should either be "Pause Current Track When Music Clip Is Played" or a "Unable To Play Tracks While Music Tracks Are Selected" type of thing.

Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine. I think that more people need to get a Zune o_o

re: And the winner is...music trivia!

I went back thru the discussions and couldn't specifically see if we were discussing this as a 'forums'-only deal or if the 'Social' web portion could be utilized as well, so I focused my answers more on using 'Social'. Disregard if I missed something! Surprise [:O]

Answers to Questions:

  • Can users submit questions? Sure, this could be a function of our 'Profile' page. Questions could be asked in the 'Comments' section
  • Do we need editors to approve them? Since I'm suggesting the 'Comments' section, I'd say self-moderation by actual Profile owner
  • Should we do genre- or decade-based quizzes? I'm greedy, mix it up and do both!
  • Are there different types of questions - for example, ones where you listen to a song clip, view an album cover, or is it just trivia (i.e. what is the best-selling album of all time?) Hey, now your talking! And how about the option to use 'Soapbox' for video clips? That could be very fun! Again, maybe another integration to the 'Social' profile page.
  • Are questions multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, true-false, a combination of all of them? Keeping true to my form, I like having choices! Give me both as a combo!
  • Is there a hierarchy of quizzes - for example, I may be a specialist in electronica only, and not know a thing about rock. So we could have genre-based quizzes and then general quizzes, and the more you complete the higher level you attain? This would be very interesting if we could set this as an option for our profile. Like with XBox Live you can set it to 'Recreation', 'Professional', etc, you could give us that as an option for genres of music. With that said, you could then be catagorized better for your genre matches. So since I'm a metal fan, I could get matched up to other metal-heads!
  • How many questions should be in a quiz?5 to keep it from getting too drawn out. How often do we need to add new questions? Once the current one's been answered Who adds them? I guess I'm pushing the boundaries a little, but I would say the end user. I'm thinking of it more of a page that we have total customization of. Asking the questions and filling in the blanks. Providing the links to the sound/video clips. I'm not sure of the legal side of this either. Maybe only provide access to clips thru the Zune Marketplace?
  • Can users create their own quizzes on their own profile pages about whatever they want? This I believe is the ultimate option. Of course, the concern always comes up of keeping our pages rated PG. Maybe provide an option on that page to notify Zune staff of 'obscene content' or something to that effect.

re: And the winner is...music trivia!
it should be the first game for the device, and people should be able to "beam" quiz files via wifi.

from there, all you'd need to do is choose a quiz to do from the Music Trivia game on the device itself!
