re: setup tells you that you are missing a package?

Finally, Success!  In case it helps others...

The 166MB package initially did not work for me.  I continued to receive the most generic error message stating that installation could not continue, something to the effect of "you need to install a Windows update." I tried running Windows Update and it, of course, would not work.  It continually told me that I did not have Administrative rights on my own laptop.  YES, I DO!

Since MS support apparently won't tell you this, go to this link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;316524 if you're having this specific Windows Update issue.  For me personally, it was of course the 6th, and final, of the possible solutions listed on that support link that actually resolved the Windows Update issue.  Be sure to boot in safe mode in order to rename that folder, and don't forget to display hidden files and folders.  With that resolved I was able to check for updates.  Lo and behold, installing a single update enabled the Zune software package to install.

And what is this magic update that Microsoft couldn't just state up front was so necessary?  Windows Genuine Advantage!  Apparently the advantage is that I can now continue using the device I paid $250 for on the laptop I paid $1,000 for.  Thanks Microsoft!  FYI, I'm running a legitimate copy of Windows XP (came pre-installed on my laptop), and if Windows Genuine Advantage is so damn important to you people then say so in one of the error messages that I encountered during the last (wasted) 6.5 hours! Seriously, why didn't the Zune software installer tell me, "You need to run Windows Genuine Advantage to continue"?

And while I'm still fired up about this (useless flaming alert)....

Finally, to Microsoft, why do you force us to use your clunky, annoying Zune software anyway?  I hate to say it, but other than the limited wireless sync capabilities, the new software version is worse than the old one.  After a one time driver install, the Zune should show up in Windows Explorer, or My Computer, as an external storage device.  Period.  Kowtowing to the media companies and trying to eke out more profit by forcing people to use your download portal has killed the user experience with your product.  Wireless or not, let us drag and drop MP3's to the Zune like a hard drive and your hardware sales would annihalte the IPod within a year or 2.  There goes Apple's cash cow.  Few people would continue using ITunes at that point.  Is that not the endgame?  Seriously, are you intentionally trying to turn Apple into a viable competitor again to keep the antitrust dogs at bay?  If so keep doing what you're doing.  You've engineered an 800 HP car, and you've put a 55 MPH governor on it.  The baby steps toward unleashing the potential of this device are way past tiresome.

What a shame.

re: setup tells you that you are missing a package?

Hey, Cesarisok, I had this problem before, and did exactly what you had typed.  However, I am still unable to install the newer version of the software onto my PC.  I am getting this message:

"Setup must stop because the required package 'Zune' failed to install.                                                                                                               The older version of Zune cannot be removed.  Contact your technical support group.                                                                                      Error code: 0x80070643                                                                                                                                                      http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=101253"

I have gone to the above link and it just says to do the same thing you had me do.  I need to figure out how to uninstall the older version of Zune (whereas I see it on my "Remove Software List", but I can't do it there either b/c it says), or I need to repair it.  I try to do either and it says a file called 'Zune.msi' is missing and not available as a network resource.

Please email me at spolak@cableone.net with any suggestions, other than restarting my PC from scratch.

Thanks, Scott Polak

I've spent hours over the last couple days trying to find some magical download that i might have missed, and I still can't figure out what update I need to get my zune working.  I run XP Media Center Edition, would this make a difference?  I'm about one day away from trading this thing in for an i-pod, but I really want my zune :(

re: setup tells you that you are missing a package?

"Setup must stop because the required package failed to install"

This is the error message that I keep getting when I try to install the new Zune update. I installed it once before but then I did a system restor to try to get rid of another program and in the process it reverted Zune back to the old version and now I can't get the new version at all. Also some of my music has been misplaced and/or deleted from my computer. sigh...Sad [:(] Can someone please tell me what to do to correct this issue? The music isn't a problem but getting my Zune to work properly is. PLEASE HELP!!!

Setup must stop because the required package 'Zune' failed to install.
Ok Microsoft, when are we going to get some help with your buggy software? My family spent $400 on a Zune and accessories that are just sitting on the floor by my computer since your software does not work. There seems to be some kind of driver error since the messages Operation 'InstallDriver' has failed with result 0x80070643 and Operation 'RemoveDriver' has failed with result 0x80004005 appear every time I try to install the 166mb download package. This leaves an unrecognized device in the System Devices tab of Device Manager which must be uninstalled. Help us!!!

error: need updates --- overcome
I've been working with the support site to install the Zune software 2.1 over the last two days. The error message would continually pop-up during "checking the computer" telling me I needed updates.  Last night I was scrolling through Zune Forums and found the user message below -- dated 11/13/07.

I downloaded the software, ran it, and the Zune software 2.1 successfully loaded.  Not sure of the relevance, but the first time I ran it -- with my Zune connected -- it failed. The second time I ran it -- with Zune disconnected -- it loaded successfully.  Note: I had no previous versions of Zune software on my XP SP2 machine.

I agree with earlier comments... Zune would destroy iPOD if they would get this install thing right, and give folks a choice -- download MP3's directly or use the Zune proprietary umbilical cord for accessing stuff from Zuneland.

Also, some hope for those still working to load Zune. My prior experience with MP3 players comes from my purchase of a 80MB iPOD. I never could figure out how to download that software, so 'Best Buy' had to eat it.

setup tells you that you are missing a package?

If you've experienced problems installing the latest Zune software and setup tells you that you are missing a package, please download the following bundled installer.

http://download.microsoft.com/download/4/5/7/4578afd6-a0b6-4724-89e5-ba9395ea6a6d/ZunePackage.exe

1. download package

2. run package to extract to your computer

3. go to directory that you extracted to, run startzune.exe

4. proceed with installation, following instructions

Try this install...

CHECK THIS OUT:
Remove or disable any adware program like Spybot or Ad-aware.
Disable any Firewall like ZoneAlarm and such. Leave the Windows Firewall on.
Disable any virus protection like Norton or McAffee

Uninstall the zune software from your PC (and remove any reference of Zune from your registry.). Use Unzoone if necessary.

Update your windows FIRST
Go to www.zune.net/setup and download the full Zune XP package
(if the Zune site doesnt work for you, try this www.microsoft.com link:
http://tinyurl.com/2yn9wa )
Install it.
     * if the installation goes wrong, run the big zuneXX.msi file under the packages folder, extracted into the zunexp folder. use the 32bit version
After the installation finishes, plug your Zune and update it going into Device > Settings > Device Update.

Detailed install using the MSI.
1. Download ZunePackage_2.1.exe (you did already)
2. Extract ZunePackage_2.1.exe
3. Go to x86\packages folder under the new zunexp folder
4. Run dotnetfx.exe
5. Run wmfdist11-windowsxp-x86-enu.exe
6. Run windowsxp-kb915865-v11-x86-enu.exe
7. Run zune-x86.msi

Try the detailed MSI install. Later.

re: Setup must stop because the required package 'Zune' failed to install.

I've had no problem with Zune software 2.x on my XP SP2 machines, but what a nightmare trying to get it to install on my Vista Business PC.  The same error as many are getting: "Setup must stop because the required package 'Zune' failed to install".  The regular Zune package and the full 166MB package both failed repeatedly.  Baffling!  How can Zune software not be able it find itself?  What exactly did I download?  Ah, more of life's mysteries.  In the old days most of my questions were in the "Why am I here?" vein, whereas now they are more like "Why am I here screwing with this @#$ computer?"

After two evenings and several hours today endlessly uninstalling/reinstalling and purging Zune entries from the Vista Registry, I turned to the support forums, and lo and behold, a solution was to be had!  For me, enabling my disabled Windows Firewall allowed the Zune software to complete the installation.  As with my XP boxes, I always disable the Windows Firewall and use a 3rd party product instead.  On XP it is ZoneAlarm, on Vista it's PC Tools Firewall Plus (as I've had nothing but endless trouble with ZA for Vista).  The Zune software had zero issues with XP's disabled firewall during the installs, but Vista is truly another animal as everyone reports.  A sad, unlovable animal that needs far too much veterinary care.

I did not disable the PC Tools firewall, I simply enabled Vista's Windows Firewall and left them both on during the Zune install.  Around the 75% mark of the installation, the PC Tools firewall suddenly popped up two warnings regarding installation files needing access permissions.  I did not get warnings from PC Tools when the Windows firewall was off, so the failure of the Zune software to install all those repeated times were Vista firewall-related.

I wish the MS KB article mentioned the firewall as a potential fix instead of pointing people to a big installation package that won't work.  A better error-reporting system would always be appreciated as well.  How's this:  "Hey, Windows Firewall is disabled.  Turn it on and rerun this installation."  Genius.

Anyway, thanks to those who figured out the firewall fix.  You have my blessings.  I hope it works for many Zuners.
