Okay, to the fist quote, what's the point of that post, are you trying to make enemies with people? Also as a fact check, Microsoft is based in Seattle, the zune is made using many parts from Toshiba (and in my opinion is most likely assembled in China): http://www.pocket-lint.co.uk/news/news.phtml/4489/5513/microsoft-zune-player-argo-pyxis.phtml
To the second quote, as I was aware, iPod owned about 60% of the market with Zune at about 5%. I suspect the different sources are reporting differently.

I was pretty confused about the point myself...

I probably got that number from the last Mac Keynote, which admittedly is going to be very favorable towards Apple. I'm glad if it's actually looking better than that for Zune. I could also have a bad memory. I think he was trying to make me feel stupid by pointing out there are many more Zunes out there than I think? Yes, there are millions of them, but still not in the sort of density for the wireless sharing to take off, especially when you consider you have to be within so many feet of someone (30 ft, off the top of my head?). It will only get better once that marketshare gets to 10%, 20%.... 50%? Dare we dream?

Anyway... let's stay on the thread topic shall we?

Here are some facts, for anyone interested.

1) Link- the article you posted is from August, 2006!  The Zune 30 hadn't even been announced yet.  The Toshiba link to uSoft  was essentially a joint development between Toshiba and Microsoft- probably to enable quick time to market for uSoft.  The Zune 30 was a slightly remodeled Toshiba Gigabeat.  But, the 2nd gen Zunes were completely different, new designs.

2) Somewhat recent market shares (May 2008) show Zune 'up' to 4%, and 2M units shipped.  Apple was at 71%.
http://www.dmwmedia.com/news/2008/05/12/zune-mp3-player-market-share-4%25%3B-creative-drops-2%25

3) InGraphite-  I think you make a good point about wireless and there not being sufficient density for sharing to take off.  (That doesn't mean there aren't pockets of zunes though.)  And, whether or whenever wireless sharing takes off is becoming less important as Microsoft adds other wireless features such as wireless connections to the marketplace, etc.

Yep I'm having this problem also. I suspected it was because of the 3.0 firmware and finding this post proves that it's not just me that has been having this problem

I don't really know how accurate this information is but I was at a baby shower this weekend and ran into an employee that works in the Zune group and was told that they are aware of the problem, It has been fixed and an update should be out THIS week.. Fingers crossed.

Hope this helps.

With how serious breaking an NDA is when you work on campus (and no I don't mean just getting fired, it can go much further than that easily) I doubt they'd just break it casually.

re: ATTENTION: All of those experiencing freezes after the 3.0 update

I am here to confirm the problem on 2 Zunes. My daughters 4 GB pink freezes daily ever since the update. She skips songs thru the song selection screen far more than me. For her, it does not matter the time of the song. Also, he battery is slow to die as her light does not stay on. My Red 80 GB froze while in the middle of taking requests at a party the other night. I have the Zune dock connected to my stereo system and was pissed off. The only positive was that the song I tried to play remained highlighted so the device died in a few hours so I could charge it back up again. What a nightmare for us! I sure hope Zune updates this serious so we can get back to dealing with our devices in a normal fashion as they were intended.
