Yeah, the 2.3 update absolutely fixed my battery issue. I'm totally back to shutting down by holding the pause button and the charge is holding fine even for days at a time. I would check your device to make sure the firmware upgrade is actually taking. Also, once you shut down, make sure you lock it so it doesn't turn on if a button is accidentily bumped.

My Zune shows 2.3 (1145).
I have made sure the Zune is no longer playing anything and then switched the hold switch to lock.
...and still, dead in the morning.
It's going back to Best Buy :(

Yeah I have a Halo 3 Zune 30 I got in July and since day 1 mine has
always died within a few hours if left alone and not charging. The new
updates have made no difference either. I'm not impressed with the
battery life anyway.....
