re: TELL US HOW YOU USE AUTO/SMART PLAYLISTS...so we do it the way you want in future releases!

Using the heart rating system is a Microsoft innovation, you say you want that taken away and go back to 5 stars.   Itunes uses 5 stars.  You want them to "innovate" a new auto playlist feature?  It may be best to just want them to copy something else.  Innovations in this software seems to work backwards.

They take a 5 star system and make it 3 choices.

They take playlists that could contain both songs and video, to only contain songs.

Take editting of song data to only allow on certain fields, and only sometimes will it actually update.

If they innovate the playlists anymore, there won't be any.

How I use playlists/ratings

I would never in my life use an auto playlist.  Just don't take away what I have now, because it's nice and simple and functional.

I love making a simple playlist myself - Drag, Drop, Name it, Save.  Done.  That's it.

I don't use the ratings - 5 stars, 3 hearts, anything, nothing - wouldn't bother me either way.

re: TELL US HOW YOU USE AUTO/SMART PLAYLISTS...so we do it the way you want in future releases!
I've got a suggestion; I hope it doesn't get lost in this sea of complaints, and I certainly hope these complaints are being heard and will hopefully be implemented in some form or another...

anyway, one thing that I do is collect a lot of compilation albums, these are usually tagged "Various Artists" and I have dozens in a subfolder of that name. If I get new ones, they get dumped into that folder, so what would be nice is an auto playlist that will add NEW songs and albums in that folder to the list automatically, similar to the way the zune monitors folders to add music to the library. This way I can create autoplaylists of new songs that are from that folder, sorted by contributing artist, album, etc, and then of course, as they are playing on my zune, I can rate them, I am a DJ and this is the system I use:

1 - hate it, will never play it or listen to it
2 - Not good enough to spin, but I might listen to it every now and then
3 - I like it, and might spin from time to time if I need filler tracks
4 - awesome song, goes on my personal player and live playlists
5 - must have, must play!!

so yeah, rating system 5 stars is a MUST as well as autoplaylists on any number of features, including file system, NOT JUST THE LIBRARY!!

thanks!

oh i forgot to mention: please please when you bring back auto playlists make sure to include FILE SIZE LIMITS on them! I tried to sync a playlist I imported from WMP and it says that it's too large! If I had some way to limit its size to say 5-10 gb it wouldn't be a problem, but I currently have no way of doing this.

yeah umm ~yawns~ iTunes didn't invent the 5 star rating system WMP has had it since it's inception...........which would have been before iRipOff

All I said was to "look" at the way iTunes does it, you can look and still find new ways to do things.

Besides,
What is good about having 4000+ songs and trying to make a playlist out of them with this software? I only complain because as a software engineer myself, when remaking software you MUST keep all previous features as a rule. I never said copy, but with something as SIMPLE to implement and simple in nature as an autoplaylist... not too much left to innovate there, C'Mon... At this point I would prefer a clone than having the feature completely missing.

A 30+ gig mp3 player needs to have software that allows people to make autoplaylists, if  I didn't have such a large library I would have spent less and got a small basic mp3 player.

I wouldnt spend all my time giving songs ratings, but you might and thats a reason to keep a feature, to me it sounds like the hardware team of this new project jumped the gun  before the software team could have fully functional software, or management itself.

As for the total remake of this project/code, it is a step in the right direction.

I just want them back!!!!!!!  I cannot believe that you put out an upgrade that actually downgrades the software!  I use the autoplaylist everytime I use my device.  Imagine my dismay when I looked and all my playlists were empty.  I want to downgrade.  Can I do that?

L2J that woulda been fine if they had choosen to keep WMP as the backbone program but they opted to go with something more defining.  Features have to be momentarily sacrafied until they can figure out how to work them back in correctly.  The Zune software is a completely new and seperate build it's not a specialized version of WMP anymore.

ok that's valid... and I can live with that, though you must admit this is pretty mediocre software to release with the brand new zunes and it's certainly not what I'd call an "upgrade"..

but still, I hear you, it's a waiting game, the question is, how long is it going to take for the next update? Wasn't it a year since the last one? I don't want to wait a YEAR for autoplaylists and the 5 star rating system to come back!

re: TELL US HOW YOU USE AUTO/SMART PLAYLISTS...so we do it the way you want in future releases!
eh i guess one of the reasons i am paitent with the software comes from my time in Star Wars Galaxies and MMO's in general.  MS and the Zune team needed a way to seperate the Zune from other PFS devices and having it's own software does that where as before with the WMP backbone it didn't (if that makes sense), i think that's what I was trying to say earlier bout the zune anyways.

re: TELL US HOW YOU USE AUTO/SMART PLAYLISTS...so we do it the way you want in future releases!
I've really tried to use the new software, but without the auto-playlist feature, it really is a downgrade from the previous version.  Not being able to create random collections from different genres with my ratings is a huge loss.  I don't want to be forced to pick and choose; I want the software to do the work for me.  Is that the purpose of software, anyway?

I understand that they went away from WMP to be more defining, it is definitely a good idea. But to release this software to the masses and the timing of the release (Christmas season), to still be missing features was a mistake. I understand they had new hardware to sell and new software would be expected to come along with it. Personally when re-designing/programming anything I make sure that all previous features are included before I even think about releasing a beta version. You can't expect something to be received well, when you are hoping most users will be happy to wait for expected features.

Take for example : Lets say you leased a new Scion tC, and when your lease was up, you liked it so much that you bought a new model year tC. Without thinking about whether or not power steering was standard on the new model (because it was, on the previous year) you purchase it, on your way driving it home, you think something is wrong with the car because steering is allot more labor intensive than it used to be.
Lets say this is a world where you can't fully test something out before you buy it ( like buying any hardware that relies on software ), wouldn't you wonder first: what they were thinking and second: when are they going to fix it?
*This is not an actual situation, all new cars have power steering standard, nor would you purchase a car without test driving it. It is merely for comparison.

In general I am a Microsoft person, if you know what you are doing and how to fix it and keep it clean, it is great.
I don't want this to sound like a bash on them, take it as constructive criticism of this piece of software specifically.

Microsoft,
How long should we expect to wait for this significant update?  I am new to Zune, and from what I hear in this forum it sounds like close to a year.
From the first post of this thread it leads me to believe that from beta stages you knew something was missing, but just now starting to code/implement it so that it can be beta tested.
