Installing or reinstall WMP 11 is only for the problem on XP.  The files that WMP 11 installs on XP are already in Vista.

Thanks for that - I can stop chasing down that track. I was able to get my laptop to recognize and install the device driver for my Zune 30 by reseting the Zune while connected to the laptop. But this hasn't helped me with my desktop (also running Vista Home). The device driver install never completes (installation failed - check with manufacturer). Device Manager shows the Zune, but with the yellow caution symbol and displaying the dreaded (code 10) error.

I know you (Goggles) were trying to solve this condition in other threads. Did you find a reliable solution for a Vista user with WMP11 already installed?

re: Cannot Install Zune Driver
I got my Zune today, hoping to get it working before my trip thursday.  I am having the same problem, code 10, yellow !, etc., called tech support and went through safe mode and everything.  It seems like Snoop Da Whoops method is working however after looking it up it seems like in Vista only some versions have the manage local groups.

I have Home Premium, don't have the option, and I figure that this is the problem for most people.  I figure that either there needs to be a way to change the users and groups a different way, or we will have to wait for someone to change it.

Hopefully someone can find a workaround.

re: Cannot Install Zune Driver

OK so after reading through 15 pages of this I finaly have been able to get my Zune to sync.......I am running Vista Home Premium and was having the same issue as many of you. Installed updated software on the PC, but software was not recognizing the Zune via USB.

I first went to the device manager and under Portable Devices I selected Zune.

I updated the drivers by searching the web there in which it updated my driver. It seems to be that Vista had some issues and thinking my 80 GB was the old 30 GB. After doing this Zune Software loaded up on my PC as it had before.

I then went to device and my Zune started to sync by itself. As of right now it is syncing my 40 + GB of music.........Hopefully this works for you.

Oh and I also disabled my Norton 360 firewall, but not sure if this had anything to do with anything.

re: Cannot Install Zune Driver
Now I've got a bigger problem, I found a way to completely reset the Zune, thought why not, and now of course I've got a Zune with no firmware, waiting for me to restore the firmware.

EDIT: Fixed that problem, hooked it up to a different computer and of course it worked fine (XP).  Still hoping that there is a solution soon.  I am not transfering 3000+ songs over to that computer.

Does anyone know how those of us who don't have the "local/groups" user option in Device Manager can find another way to make that adjustment?

After reading I would not suggest anyone give local service admin priviladges. This apparently can open up a big security hole as it gives any program that uses Local Service Admin priviladges.

Is there any way to report this, I don't think anyone in Microsoft knows of this.  I think that the only way that we are going to get a proper fix is if someone from Microsoft fixes it. I don't know how something like this can slip through the cracks, I'm regretting deciding on the Zune right now.

I/We/Microsoft are aware of this problem and are trying to find the root cause.  Unfortunately we have no been able to reproduce the problem ourselves, which is making progress on a solution slow.

Is there any information I can give you about my computer?  I'm getting the Code 10 error.

EDIT: Sorry, I am running Vista home Premium

I agree.  If they do not have the same drivers, devices, aftermarket software installed on there systems as you do at home/office were you are having the problem then there is no way for them to accurately diagnose.  So far I have heard that reinstalling the operating system repairs the problems.  This has confirmed (for me at least) that the problem is another conflict that is specific to something else you have installed.

Anyone out there tried booting from the CD and run a system repair, reboot, then try installing the Zune again?  At least you won't loose everything this way.
