Plugged my Zune 30 back in, after about 10 minutes, Zune software came up, everything started to sync, and all is well with the world again.
My Thoughts:
Nasty little bug here. Could Microsoft have found and prevented this from happening? Possibly not. I do software testing for my company, and we extensively test for leap year conditions, but we test them for February 29, not for the 366th day of the year. I would assume that Microsoft tests their equipment and software the same way, so it's very possible that this one took them by surprise. Will Microsoft fix the driver before the next leap year? One would hope that they can, but it is related to a part that is only in the Zune 30. Its possible that there might not be a way around it with the driver, and that the problem is totally hardware, and no amount of driver tweaking will be able to stop the freeze in 4 years. Microsoft also might think that there will not be enough Zune 30's in service in 4 years to make it worth trying to fix it.
I hope that Microsoft does look at the problem after the New Year and see if there is a firmware update that they can do to keep this from happening 4 years from now. I am one that does not have a lot of money, so I will more than likely have my Zune 30 4 years from now. I will not get a newer one unless my Zune 30 craps out for good, which I hope that it doesn't for a very long time.
