re: Zune 30 freezing issue - [Update and Resolution]

Well I did as they suggested... Let it die and then recharged it the next day and in about 10 minutes it was up and running.  No loss of files or any other probs.   YEA!!!!!!

re: Zune 30 freezing issue - [Update and Resolution]
I've tried the suggested solution, and mine STILL freezes.  It is now 7:57 PM central time on January 1, 2009.

So, now what do I try... Or do I have a $200 paperweight, now.  And, has Microsoft lost a loyal customer for life?

I'm trying the solution that was posted on page 103 but idk it doesn't look promising.

re: Zune 30 freezing issue - DIY FIX

I tried the sugested fix several times and it still left me with a frozen brick and since i don't have an extended warranty i cracked the puppy open and it worked

pull the battery plug wait 10 sec. re-attach battery cable but before it reboots hold the left button and center and left arrow for a full reset as well as going into settings and under software where it says forget all devices unplug zune from computer then back in again. Go through complete setup as if it were the first day all over again and this does work the software will reload new firmware and software upgrades at the same time. then reload all media which in my case will take hours

i'm currently at a 68% sync

if your like me and don't have an extended warranty and don't want to wait and pay the extra money to send it back to microjerks use very small screw driver for glasses and take your time

re: Zune 30 freezing issue
Yeah, hindsight is always 20/20.  Why in the world would I think that my Zune's hard drive freezing was something affecting everyone?  A Zune that doesn't respond to buttons or a PC connection or draining the battery appears to be something that will need to be taken apart.  Call Zune support?  So some guy reading from a cheat sheet can tell me to mail in my Zune and pay $100 or more for service, until the next time it stops working?  Again, this is the perfect storm.  Why would I think, in the middle of New Year's Eve celebrations, that maybe Microsoft forgot to design their software to be compatible with leap year?  I didn't even remember that this was a leap year, 10 months later.  The point is, the world's biggest software maker left an idiotic bug in their software that disabled a huge number of devices during one of the year's most festive occasions.  These are devices out of warranty.  Who sends in their out of warranty music players for service?  The least the Microsoft behemoth could do is offer its shafted customers a discount on a new Zune after they tried to get their out-of-warranty units unfrozen.  Sorry, I know most people taking the time to post and read posts on these forums are geeky enough to go running to tech forums on New Year's when their out-of-warranty devices konk out, but most people aren't that geeky.

This is the perfect storm of a software bug. The Zune is a social device. It plays music. It was made for parties. The day it freezes is New Year's Eve, when people are getting out their Zunes to play party music. People are too busy hosting parties to go looking for technical support, after business hours, on a holiday, especially for devices that are already out of warranty. So they do the best they know how. I tried resetting my device without any luck. Then I tried removing the battery, which ended up cracking the LCD screen. At that point there was nothing left worth saving, so I let my teenage son tear apart the rest. Then on New Year's Day, after the festivities die down, I check my email and find a notice from Zune about a leap year bug. You've got to be kidding me! The world's biggest software maker can't handle a leap year? And because of something as stupid as that, now my Zune is destroyed? So I call customer support, asking if there is any discount or anything I can be given towards a new device. Nope. Just go on our website and buy a new one. Thanks a lot. I've loved my Zune, but I don't think I'll be buying another one after this experience.
You took a chance and cracked it open without first consulting Zune support... Don't blame this on the company, please. They were working with us the whole time — that you didn't check was your fault, not Zune's.

And all this time I thought it was "youngsters" with the irrational demands and unrealistic expectations. Tsk-tsk.

re: Zune 30 freezing issue - [Update and Resolution]
I've had my Zune plugged up to my computer because I left for New Years Eve and was afraid to let it die... but now I saw the notice and unplugged it and am waiting for it to die. How long should this take? Are most people's 30s working like normal again?

I also have checked my software... it always has come up saying it was up to date, but I checked and it actually said I was using Version 2.5.447.0

Should I download 3.0 and use it? If I do this, will it save all my content (music, pictures, playlists, etc) I currently have?

Thanks for the help!

re: Zune 30 freezing issue
I had the same experance as Tom. Now I have a busted Zune display! Not there falt, but I still have not recieved any notifastion from MS or Zune! Yesterday, when it locked up I started looking on line and all addvice was to disconect the battery! Still trying to get it to work! I think I might have got it to start the reset process. Have to wait and see. I will miss my Zune, used it every day at work.

re: Zune 30 freezing issue

One mustn't be "geeky" to visit a support forum, only slightly intelligent and self-motivated. Sorry, but to me it's just common sense to research a problem with a mechanical or electronicdevice when a problem occurs.

I had the same problem everyone else had and was just as frustated but still had the presence of mind and apparently more importantly, the time, to open a browser and visit Zune.net.

Dear Zune Social:
Fix the friggin' signature links already! WTF?
