The covers you prefer to the originals?

Imogean Durden 4/6/2009 20:57:38

Yeah, yeah, I'm a purist, too, but everyone's got at least one. I don't have many, but I've got two covers of Rhianna's "Umbrella" that I love (by All Time Low and Lillasyster), despite the fact that I hate Rhianna with a passion.

And, I gotta admit, it doesn't compare to the original, and I usually, for some completely unknown reason, dislike when girls sing Beatles songs (it doesn't make any sense, because I'm a girl), but Across the Universe's version of "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" is pretty adorable.

ORIGINALS!!!

Do not waste yourself in rejection, nor bark against the bad, but chant the beauty of the good.

my mom is really into chris isaak so i remember her listening to wicked game a bunch growing up, and i remember really digging that song (and i still do), but then one day i heard a metal-ish version of it by some band called HIM, and since them i've become a big fan of HIM and i prefer there version

I actually really like covers. It's kinda cool to hear a different interpretation of the song like the Perfect Circle version of Imagine. Sometimes I just like covers because they make me chuckle like Local H's version of Toxic (there's one I like better than the original). I have a whole playlist of covers. It's kinda a guilty pleasure sorta thing.

No, I know what you mean - I love covers. It's just that I rarely like them better than the original. In a different way, maybe, but rarely more. I have Local H's version of Toxic, actually. I have a whole album of metal covers of Britany Spears songs. Cracks me up, every time one of them comes up on my Zune.

Have you ever heard the Static Lullaby cover of Toxic?

I absolutely love what the Raconteurs did with Bang Bang by Nancy Sinatra: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5VPL_PEp8s
White Lies have a badass cover of Kanye's Love Lockdown: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7v5f54u2lw
Jeff Healey's cover of While My Guitar Gently Weeps actually improves on a near perfect song
Cake's cover of Gloria Gaynor's classic I Will Survive is amazing!
My all time favorite cover is probably Rage Against The Machine's acoustic cover of Devo's Beautiful World...sooo out of their element but they nail it.
Thoughts?

Yes! That's on that album, as well, and it's quite amusing. I work out to it a lot. XD

Rachid Tacha's "Rock El Casbah" is AMAZING. Sorry, Clash.

The video is great fun too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DbFYsi9iSg

Funny enough, the first thing I thought of when I saw this thread was Across the Universe (the song) by Fiona Apple. I always thought her version was much more ethereal than the Beatles version. It was from the Pleasantville soundtrack.

Gary Jules - Mad World
Joe Cocker - Get By With a Little Help From My Friends
Queen - Crazy Little Thing Called Love

those are just a few

I actually made a CD a few years back that was half originals, half covers.  It was a neat mix I think, but got a bit redundant after a few plays.  I had it in a AABBCC etc. order
